My favorite trivia about this film is that Shane Black wanted to write a romance film after the 'failure' of The Long Kiss Goodnight but he kept getting writer's block and just said "Fuck it. I have to put a murder in it." Phenomenal film.
There is no witty dialogue in the world like witty Shane Black dialogue. I just love the way Shane Black characters speak and interact, it's just music to my ears.
This movie is just entertaining overall. The chemistry between Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer was nothing short of immaculate. Val Kilmer was the highlight of the film, and that's not a knock on RDJ, or anyone else. Also, I love Michelle Monaghan. It's a shame that we didn't get a sequel.
@@jamesatkinsonjayep I just watched this movie because Chris reviewed it and damn it’s really similar to nice guys, the Hollywood party, the murder mystery, family involvement, people getting hurt in hilarious ways. If I had seen kiss kiss bang bang before nice guys I probably wouldn’t have appreciated the nice guys as much when I watched it
I audibly asserted, “Oh hell yeah!” when the notification came up for this video. Getting Stuckmannized Shane Black style is a wonderful Christmas gift.
I adore this movie because it's not afraid to go dark when it needs to, but never to the point that you can't have fun with it. The eventual reveal and the whys and whos are actually really, really dark. Same with The Nice Guys. The plot is really dark, but populated with these fresh, aware characters that you don't notice. I want another Shane Black movie like this. The whole "Look up the definition of idiot in the dictionary" line is probably my favorite joke in the movie. And while Downey Jr is amazing in this, Val Kilmer is unmatched in comedic timing and delivery. I once told a friend that this movie is what would happen if James Elroy (author of LA Confidential) wrote a Deadpool movie. I wish they would give Shane Black a TV series and let him play. Great review and Merry (belated) Christmas to you and yours Chris!
I’ve seen quite a few videos of people talking about this movie this year, and it warms my heart. I’m glad this movie is finally getting the recognition it deserves
As a gay man, I loved the portrayal of Val Kilmer as a regular guy who happens to be gay. I get tired of the stereotypes of gay men as the flamboyant and sassy best friend. These stereotypes donot reflect reality .AND the gay man does not die. This was refreshing.
He was good looking so they kept trying to give him leading man roles, when what he is is a comedic genius! He’s very versatile but he shines best when he’s being sassy and funny.
Iron man 3 is also a Shane Black movie that takes place around Christmas, and while he didn't direct the first Lethal Weapon movie, he was the story writer who set the movie during Christmas.
Been watching your channel for the last 6 years. First comment, just wanted to say how much I appreciate Chris continuing to do great reviews while having a lot on his plate. Have a good new year mate. Much love from down under
It's nice to look back on the movies that helped turn RDJ's life around. Because if you only know him from post-Iron Man stardom... Downey's substance abuse was a massive scandal in Hollywood. Like really, really bad...
This. I remember being really pleased that this movie was so good & I absolutely adored Tropic Thunder. As a longtime addict myself, I was definitely pulling for him to get his life together. When I heard he’d been cast to play Tony Stark, I was so happy for him. As an Iron Man comic fan from the 70’s & 80’s I also thought it was perfect casting, as Tony Stark is a pretty bad alcoholic in comics & I thought that RDJ would really be able to understand that struggle.
This was one of my favorite movies while I was working at blockbuster in the early 2000s and it was severely overlooked. Between this one, Sunshine, and Running Scared, those were the three most recommended movies I recommended to people who have “seen everything”.
Thank you so much for your valuable feedback! I have also recapped "Jolt (2021) Movie", Kindly watch this movie explanation too. Your feedback will be appreciated. Thank you___🙏
In my top 10 movies ever since I saw it in the cinema when first released. Never get bored watching it & recommending it to people - perfect for watching every festive season 😊
I've watched this movie for about four Christmases in a row, its Downey Jr as a felon going to Hollywood parties, his real life imitating art. It's also the type of Hollywood movie we don't see anymore so I'm nostalgic for it.
I had the privilege of watching this movie twice in the theater back when it came out. Once with a girlfriend and the next with my mom. We all thought it was quirky and hilarious! The RDJ and Kilmer tag team is soooo good I wish they had done a sequel.
saw the first 30 seconds of your video, paused, went back to see the movie 'cause I been craving some xmas flicks, just finished it, and now I am watching the full review, I had such a great time Chris! val and rdj's chemistry was charming, had never seen this movie before, thanks for the recommendation and please review more xmas movies! take love
i absolutely adore this movie, it's one of those movie that will never fail to bring you joy no matter how many times you watched it. RDJ's song in the end credit is also really nice, even though i have to say it kinda mismatch the movie tone 😅
This is one of the reasons why I hate it when people say Iron Man "saved" RDJ's career. He was already doing good movies again by the time he got Iron Man. Even Tropic Thunder was under wraps regardless of Iron Man and would have still been a blockbuster.
It was certainly a key part of his 'comeback' along with Gothika [as he met his current wife who played a big part in helping him hit back]. Jon Favreau apparently said that watching 'Kiss Kiss' was what made him realise RDJ was perfect for Iron Man. I guess it's because more people saw Iron Man [and it came out a few months before Tropic Thunder] and sadly 'Kiss Kiss' was a hidden gem on release that wasn't as big a hit as it should have been.
Wow, this is wild. I just watched this movie yesterday (along with The Nice Guys) so now I get to hear the thoughts of one of my favorite reviewers! Thanks Mr Stuckmann! "Don't quit your gay job!"
My brother, and I rented this many moons ago due to the recommendation of the clerk at the video store. She made it seem like we REALLY had to check this movie out. Long story shirt my brother and I have loved this film for quite some time. It is fantastic.
My favourite and most probably the best Robert Downey Jr movie ever. I would go as far as saying that he's a more perfect magician Harry Lockhart than Iron Man.
Hey Chris, I know you've done a review of Die Hard a long time ago but, I still feel you could do another one going more in depth about what parts you love most about the movie next Christmas! I would absolutely love a more detailed review for that Christmas classic!

One example of a movie I thought could be reviewed was Death Becomes Her. Which kind of gotten panned by critiques. However, when I watched it I found it very funny and original. I truly wish they let him get more movies to write and direct I think he could be close to an Edgar Wright or Wes Andersen. There isn’t enough great comedy voices in Hollywood
Shane Black is a master at these type of movies. The nice guys is one that should have been a much larger hit. That movie is a masterpiece in my opinion
Releasing it in May 2016 against 'Captain American: Civil War' didn't help it. If it had come out in a quieter time, it could have built an audience with word of mouth.
Kkbb is a favorite movie of mine. I like to call out my Die Hard lmao it's a movie I always watch at Christmas despite being more an action mystery and less of an actual Christmas movie.
