- This five second test took about three hours to animate. I did it for a demonstration lecture for the students at Cal State Fullerton. If you want to see the full three hour demonstration, it's here:
• James Baxter Animation...
The God of Animation is back.
YES
The bob Ross of animation
Bro i see you everywhere
You sir...are a Treasure.
thanks so much! you’re very talented wow
Awesome 👏
Love seeing more spectacular animation from you! How are things at Netflix so far?
jaaaaaaaames baxter
Just three hours? man... I am working on a 15 seconds animation from three monts ago
Man having you as a teacher must be so cool
He's not actually a professor here, he just had a seminar with a club on-campus.
Literally a dream come true
Literally what I was thinking while watching this haha
Nah, he just rolls around the classroom on top of a ball yelling out his name
I just watched your demo reel. I didn't realise just how much of your work I have seen In my life :D
Everything from the the most famous Disney films to TV shows. So much wonderful stuff.
I didn't know you worked on Gravity Falls too.
Didn't expect to find a WT channel here, but it's a pleasant surprise.
W o w. 1 comments?!
3 hours for 5 seconds really gives you perspective on how hard animation really is. It takes me an hour for 1 second roughly, which means a whole music video took at least 225 hours, I'd estimate more.
Then again, most of the frames drawn in these 5 seconds were different whereas if you were animating a music video, you would add pauses for emphasis and you would probably copy and paste and draw over some of the frames. it also really depends on the detail in your drawing and background, but yeah it would probably take more than 225 hours for a fully colored and refined music video
Yep especially if ya working alone to give a 5 sec clip...just imagine animations like Treasure planet, spirit etc where its a 1 hr long movie...and thats with team included...it would take atleast 4 yrs to fully prepare for the animation i believe
I depends on how much you enjoy doing it
If you enjoy it, it feels like 10 minutes
If youre just trying to get it done, it'll feel like 3 hours
And that’s why the phrase: animate me! Does not end in an interesting night
"I just need to work on this a tiny bit longer"
*15 hours later*
“Takes 3 hours to draw a 5 second sketch”
Me: *takes 139 hours to draw a 13 second sketch so roughly 53 hours for a 5 second clip*
Hooooow the hell do you animate so fast?
he *diiiiiid* work for disney after all
hes been doing this professionally his whole life, working for disney and all, so ofc he's going to be quick. if you keep trying then youll get faster.
I'm so happy I'm not the only one who thought so : D It would take me two days to do all job including making a video reference, some planning in my notebook and finally animating it so it woudn't look like crap. And I work in 3D..
@@pingpongya795 I just stated working on my first animation and I only just finished the sketch process after a month of work.
@@Vladlena_ I have no idea how to make a 3D model at all. Downloaded Blender and just stared at it only to get a headache because it was as if someone just gave me alien tech to try and decipher.
Me: wow I can’t wait to be an animator!
“Hi this 5 second clip took me 3 hours to make”
Me, who can’t focus for more than 15 seconds : *gives up on all my hopes an dreams*
Make one drawing. Get up. Walk around the room. Sit down, make next drawing. Repeat.
@@stillbuyvhs that's really a bad idea
If it's because of ADHD, you'd probably end up hyper-focusing and not even notice the time pass bye anyway. I've seen it happen, people forget to eat if they're not careful.
I love watching lectures from animation legends, they are always so edifying.
Even I can't imagine how long he does this small frame
It was so wonderful having you give us a lecture at CSUF's Pencil Mileage Club! Thank you for taking the time to teach us a little bit about your process!
You’re welcome. I had fun! I think it turned out pretty well :)
@@jamesbaxter1236 it really did :) you're one of my inspirations and it was really exciting to see you stop by 😄
The legend returns to shed light during these dark times
Thank you James ❤️
I always love how expressive your animations are, even if they are 5 seconds long. So cool.
I like your funny words, magic man!
Oh hey, I was at that demo! Thank you so much for speaking with us, it was really amazing to watch you work and I learned so much!
HE'S BACK!!! THANK YOU JAMES!!! ❤✨
Thanks for adding a link to our channel, we’re getting a lot of exposure because of it! It was such a pleasure to have you speak to our club and answer all of our questions!
People really don't understand how long a process art is. Some people might sit there and think "3 hours for that short 5 second clip" until they understand that art is a time consuming process, it's a hobby and it's a way for people to express themselves in ways that brings joy to others. Me personally I think this is quite polished for a clip that only took a few hours to make and will more then likely never see much more work go into it. That animation is so smooth
this is really cool
People who haven't done animation: it really took you 3 hours to just do that 5 second clip?
People who have done animation: how did you do that in just 3 hours???
My favorite part of James Baxter’s work is to go frame by frame analyzing every single frame.
Wow! It looks so smooth!
You just need sound effect for "blow"👌😊🇩🇿☪️☮️
I hear the James Baxter Horse voice in his natural voice.
Imagine being taught by the guy who animated pretty much ur whole childhood :>
I'm so glad Noodle taught me about your existence.
When the world needed him most, he returned

Oh wow! I didn’t know you were on UA-cam!
I’ve always been able to instinctively recognize your style in movies, but it wasn’t until today when someone told me “James Baxter” from Adventure Time was a was to reference/honor *You* that I really learned who you are!
Thanks for all the wonderful animations! I hope you’re enjoying your work. ^-^
You’re so cool you inspire me
Imagine having THE James Baxter as your animation teacher,
I see the setup, the initial reaction, secondary reaction, wind-up, anticipation, follow-through, and resolution all in play here. Brings me back to the days I studied under Don Bluth, and it reminds me that I should get back to animating sooner than later. I miss my process, but I need to finish the map I made for my next project before working on the layouts. If the map isn't right, then neither will anything else be, after all! Thank you for more inspiration, sir.
3 hours????????? This is insanely short time for frame by frame
Do you rather 3D or 2D animation? I’ve worked with both programs and I prefer 3D because most programs help you do in betweens.
Hi James do you remember which Quasimodo scenes Chris Sauve animated on Hunchback of Notre Dame?
Gosh I’ve been playing this in 0.25 playback speed because I really want to see the individual frames. I want to animate like this someday! :((
Did i just start going to an animation highschool purley because i love james baxter, no..... J.G. Quintel is also a reason
I think u should animate a Pokémon battle or a short minecraft speed run.
Can I pls have a shoutout?
hey, I'm great fan of your works. Please, post more :) !
That's impressive for only 3 hours and while I'm not going to school for animation, I would love to sit through one of your classes someday. You're my favorite animator and I probably annoy my friends whenever I point out on of your scenes in a movies. Keep up the good work, you're such an inspiration
Really can't wait the next session!! =D (Because you told that you were interested by doing it again =) )
i really would like you to start a series on how you animate please james please james
hello, it may be out of place, but I have a question. I can't figure out how to make the transition between the extreme positions? I heard somewhere that if you move from point A to point B, it will work well, but boring. but then how to make it better?
I'm focusing my career to be a film director one day. Until I get there I am primarily focusing on acting and screenwriting. But I have always wanted to do animation. I have all these storyboard ideas, and characters I created that I wish I can animate them. Even if I don't do it to the very last detail I wish I had patience to do frame by frame animation. Even as roughly drafted as this video, I'd be more than grateful. Now I am just tired of drawing stills😅
I did the ball animation which is a great way to start but even that took everything out of me. I have respect for those who do animation. Especially frame by frame.
im going to the animation course at Cal State Fullerton next fall =D
hi! i don’t know if you remember me or not but i sent a bunch of my spirit artwork to you as a child and got a letter and drawing of spirit in return! anyway just wanted to say that you’re still a big inspiration to me even now on my 20th birthday ❤️
its been a year daddy
we really really miss you
Wait i thought u were british why do you have an american accent lol
I know you probably won't see this, but I'm aspiring to become an animator, and I'd like to know how long you've been animating for, as well as key concepts, tips, and techniques used. Do you have videos that cover that? What videos on UA-cam would you recommend for learning? I really look up to you and your amazing work! You inspire me!
Hi there, did you watch the full length demo that I linked in the description? It's about 3 hours long and shows me animating this shot and talking through a lot of the questions that you have. Admittedly, it's for students and professionals who have already done some animation. If you want a good book, there's Richard William's Animator's Survival Kit, or Eric Goldberg's Character Animation Crash Course.
Oh okay! Thank you so much! I'll be sure to check those out.
Jjjjjjjaaaammmmeeesss baaxxxxterrrrrr
Aaa you’re such an inspiration!
i just found you today and i love you
Thank you so much for coming to speak for us, James! It was wonderful to have you and equally as wonderful to watch you animate! Hope you're doing well! ✨
I love your animations
*Return of the King*
Wow! I couldn't draw this anytime! Great work!
Beautiful as always
Perfect as always james!
Wow, thanks!
*drop kicks acorn*
Amazing animation
I just wanna say, you’re my favorite animator ever
ONLY 3 HOURS?
I love him.
For a Disney animator he’s very underrated
Huh???
Impressive as always Mr. Baxter! ♡
3 hours???
Something like that would take me 2 days MINIMUM!
Can you post more for Wolfwalkers, Beauty and the Beast, and Hunchback Please?
"Hey its james baxter"
Christ thats sounded like gaben giving away steam sales again
For something made in just tree hoursx, I'm really impressed
What’s your stance on using thumbnails and reference for animation?
Dear Mr. Baxter,
I know you may not even see this, but I want to tell you how much your work has impacted me. You are the reason I got into animation. Thank you for the incredible work you've done over the years.
There may be a full demonstration, but there isn't a full 2D movie about this squirrel.
That squirrel animation should be the best meme ever.
Hi. May I please make an animation request?
Whoa three hours!!! I'm really impressed!!! It turned out GREAT!!!
damn james baxter, i love you
I just went looking for you on UA-cam and here you are! I was just reading your foreword in the Art of Wolfwalkers book. Hearing about your experience geeking out over Cartoon Saloon was a wonderful thing. I guess all us animators are a bit excited to be here and longing to work on each other's projects.
I watched a bit of you working on this squirrel a while back, it was a great experience! Thanks for putting your stuff up; it's always encouraging for us other animators wandering around in the wild :D
IT TOOK YOU ONLY 3 HOURS TO ANIMATE THAT MASTERPIECE
James Baxter, one of the few animators left that I know of who can animate as fast as the 9 Old Men.
when i see your animations i get jealos
I have to question how does a horse on a beach ball that only says his name like a Pokemon animate something this smooth.
I absolutely love your little animations so much!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
3 hours... It only took him 3 hours.
That is UNBELIVABLE 😭🤩
You’re amazing! Welcome back! 🙏🏻
Waiting for that quadruple walk session.
I'm new to this channel and my only words are:....jaaaaaaAAAAAAAAmmMmmessssSss BAXTER
You are so talented, well done!!
Forget astronauts- ANIMATION’S where it’s at.
This took you 3 hours...
They weren't kidding about you being a legend.
Will check it out!
smooth... me like
as a young animator (do I even have the right to call myself an animator) as an someone who wants to be an animator someday, you are like a legend, Omgggg everytime I watch any scenes you animated or anything from you it’s just so smooth and there’s so much movement!
Cool animation!
