I’ve just recently run across your pave- thank you for your analyses on Bill Evans style piano! You’ve nailed down the many harmoni ideas of this unique pianist
Hi everyone. Just a quick note to say that all of the examples and analyses from this series of videos (+ more) are now available as a downloadable eBook (in PDF format) from my website here: www.rowanhudson.com/product-page/bill-evans-harmonic-concepts-ebook
Interesting video and awesome work! I always had thought of the last one you showed as just a solo with an Evans' "style" of left hand comping, where it rhythmically matches the solo in the right hand. Had never thought of it as block chords, but that is probably because I've only used Shearing voicings where the bulk of the block is in the right hand.
I've been looking through the transcriptions of "Concert by the Sea" of Erroll Ganer and I see some similarities. Bill is obviously more rhythmically sophisticated in the last examples than Erroll. to me, Erroll's left-hand sounds like Gypsy Jazz and Bill, more pianistic. This is really a nice series.
The first is the locked hands variant of four way close, not drop 2. It's like 4 way close but melody note is doubled on top and bottom which gives it that choral texture. Just want to note that because locked hands (which bill uses more) is easier than drop 2.
Congrats!... Your transcriptions and Bill's style are SUPERB. Very aurally and visually delivered. 🤳 Greetings from Asunción, Paraguay.
Appreciate this deep dive into my fav pianist!
The locked hands method at the end really defines the Bill Evans sound IMO - a very useful technique!
Amazing lesson, thanks so much. Very clear and to the point. You chose great example recordings
Love this, thanks
this series is _excellent_ , thanks for sharing all this!

Yes, I agree. I didn't use the term drop 2 to describe the first example though.
