Great video. My dad grew up in Steubenville & I have some good memories of visits to my grandparents in the 1970s. And we all ate at Naples Spaghetti House after my auntie's funeral years later.
thanks so much for making this video, i grew up in mingo jct. in the late 50's 60's and was there when they were filming the Deer Hunter, i worked in the mill from 3-6-72 to 4-20-80 i can't believe that it looks like this now so sad things were booming back then, life was good. i've been to that bakery many times the best hot bread around. in the 60's and 70's downtown you could't find a street parking space. i hope you make more videos you did a great job.i worked in the blast furnace in mingo for 2 years, hard work.
I came through this steel mill industrial area of Mingo Jct., Steubenville, Ohio and Weirton, West Virginia back in 2004. It was still a beehive of activity with operational blast furnaces, coke ovens and giant BOF facilities. Took a little bit of video, but wish I had shot more. Hard to believe nearly all I witnessed back then is nearly all gone.
Thanks for the video ! I did a concert with . My band somewhere in Mingo junction in the eighties can't remember exactly where but the people were great . God bless all there.
Nobody wants to get political but the politics plays a major part in getting this area back running and gunning. They can bring everything back with a change of mindset. They’re burning coal a lot cleaner these days with new technology so it’s possible. I’m new to the area because of the fracking going on, it pays well and I’ll be around as long as it’s around.
This was very educational, I quite enjoyed it! The only feedback I have is that it would have been nice to include clips and pictures from back in the day to compare to how it looks today :)
Wow, great video! Love your story about Dean Martin and how all of the card dealers slowly moved to Vegas in the 1950s. I have often wondered why no one (no company, no local/county/state government) will invest money to restore towns like Steubenville into something modern and useful? Instead, such towns are left to rot away.
The Deer Hunter was Filmed on The South side Of Cleveland Ohio in The area Known as Treemount Weding was filmed St Theodosius Russian orthodox Church, The reception was Filmed at Lemko hall Steel mill scene rebublic steel only scene from Mingo junction is the interiors shots of Welshs Bar Also the Movie Christmas Story Was Filmed in the same Cleveland Neighborhood Known as Treemount I know because I was There at the filming Fact.
10:43 is where the truck blasts by them in the car after they got off work and they drag race with it. The house is in Weirton WVA where Michael character lived.
Lots of jobs but lots of cancer from the pollution as well. I remember the snow turning black in Weirton from it, plus the smog in the morning riding the bus to Cove elementary…and I thought…I’m not staying here when I get old, and I didn’t. I got a degree in EE and made lots of money with it, bought houses, Porsches, Ducatis and more. I made the smart choice and I’ll retire soon with a pension, a 401K and all my toys.
That is a great Video. I am the current owner of the original MIngo Central High School. There have been a few films made there, and I will be using the school as a Movie production studio soon. I am creating a film and art school there and will be producing a series of horror films. I invite you all to come see the school as soon as we open up. Please report any crimes or vandalism against the school if you see any. Thanks
Russian have nothing to do with this disaster. Russian do not need your equipement. And if they need to buy, they could buy it from Europe (Germany Holland and many others). And todays genereation of Americans not interesting to do a hard job for living. And one more think: Who shut down & sold the mills? It wasn't Americans themself? Otherways a Nice video! All the best.

Great video! I really enjoy watching videos of the “hey days” of the old steel mill towns and vids of what they’ve become, Sad as it is.
The bar scenes for Deer hunter were filmed at Welchs lounge. My dad owned it at this time.
Great History, thanks for that bit of information, is the Bar still standing ? or Open ?
Oh, was that bar in Mingo Junction ?

Interesting.., Thanks :)
The bowling alley scenes were filmed at the Bowladrome in Struthers, Ohio. Right across the river from the old Youngstown Sheet and Tube.
Tremont, not Treemount

I thought the blast furnace tapping scene was filmed at USS Central Furnace, Cle.
I grew up near Ragland. And grandparents worked on the railroad for penn central. He went through all those places way back in the day.
i ate at the naples restaurant i would always order what they called a meat hill, it was half a loaf of italian bread filled with meat sauce.
I thought it was called a Meatball Heel 🤔 Good either way 😁
So very sad those days are gone
Great History. Thanks. Next time, cross the river into Weirton, WV.
You missed Weirton and Follansbee WV also had a couole of scenes from the movie, which is right across the river from your video.
Good video. One correction: Christopher Walkin. Not, 'Watkins.'
My wedding reception was at Mingo K. Of C
Good thing you got into Mingo, when you did, because it's going to be the "Comeback Kid"
