The REAL Story Of How I Got Into Med School
Вставка
- Опубліковано 5 чер 2024
- Hey, guys! I know that a lot of you have been requesting a video of my pre-med or med school journey. Although I have unique pre med experience as I did an accelerated 7-year program, there is still a lot of insight for me to share with you,. This video covers everything from high school to college all the way to med school. Basically how I got into medical school and my premed journey.
Initially, this video was over 2 hours long and we were able to cut it down to 20 minutes so I can expect for you to have some questions left unanswered. Leave me your medical school questions and comments down below as you know I love to respond to them in my monthly videos.

After hearing your story , I couldn't love your philosophy towards life more. Being positive, experiencing everything and loving your own career are things you teach me in this video clip. Though I am not a doctor, I think your suggestions are suitable for every job. Thanks for sharing your life with us. Looking forward to watching your next video!
Actually I have watched this video for three times, I still love the part when you talk about "being human". No matter what your career is, showing true emotion is not always unacceptable, as long as you show it in a proper way. On the other hand, showing emotion means you care about your job, not because you have no other choice but to do this. Thanks for liking my comment, and thank you for making great videos. Love from Taiwan!

One of my reason of becoming a doctor is because a friend told me that i will not survive in med school. Now he’s no longer in med school and i’m stuck being an actual doctor.

Hey, just wondering how your experience with it is? I got accepted as well and was wondering how difficult it is, if you genuinely enjoy the classes you take, and how the environment (especially the other students in the program) is?

I'm sorry, can we talk about Adderall use and abuse in medical schools & the profession Dr. Mike? This quote "This is the perfect example of beauty with brains" reminded me about the reality and pressures associated with a medical career and the profession in the US. Not all that glitters is real gold these days, especially on social media and instagram. I don't want everyone to lose their self-confidence. While I'm not saying anyone uses, I'm know many in medical school know about the perfectly legal Adderall epidemic going on in this country and profession. www.self.com/story/adderall-the-get-ahead-drug www.nytimes.com/2016/10/16/magazine/generation-adderall-addiction.html

You just motivated me SO MUCH to be my own person in my health science field. I wanna be smart, hardworking and so frickin in love with my profession. Thank you thank you thank you
I stress out before every test, and as much as i study i keep forgetting everything😭
SAME you’re not alone!!
Maybe it's good to look up/try out different study methods. Flash cards are a good way yes. Maybe quizlet helps? Basically, you can fill in the things you need to learn or memorize and it will repeat until you get it right (and later on repeat it again to see if you remember it).
But it is also good to study in parts and not 'binge study' the night before (I know a lot do it and for some it works), but it helps you to remember these things in the long term.
Overall, my teachers kept saying to keep a calm or positive mindset. Maybe that helps? I don't like giving false hope, but little reminders such as 'you can do this' or 'you're half way there' won't hurt :D♥ good luck with your studies!!
Im 22 yo, I was studying something else and left everything to try med school, it was such a hard decision bc I knew itd take a lot of time, courage and effort to actually become a doctor but after studying something I wasnt passionate about I realized how much I craved to help people and save lives, so I started all over again, no matter what people said about my age. What Im learning is: Time goes really fast when you focus. My first year in med school is almost over, Im enjoying every chapter I read, I couldnt be any happier. This speech means a lot to me, thank you for your words. Medicine is where my heart belongs.
I dropped out of college on my 3rd year, was studying English. Totally hated it and it started affecting my physical and mental health. There was only a bunch of people who understood my decision, and to this day, some think that it was a bad idea cause I'm the only who's not a graduate in my family.
Am currently studying to be a pre-primary school teacher, it doesn't pay so well here, in Mauritius, and the same people who discouraged me from quitting college are the ones to not appreciate that I found my calling.
But I think, enough with the haters, am doing my thing regardless of what it might take. And am planning on bringing some reforms in the teaching methods here.
So yeah, power to me, and power to you, for knowing where our hearts are, and doing the right moves at the right time. 🎈
I'm in 3rd year of med school , i started when i was like 17, my roommate is 23 or something and he started med school along with me..so it's never late. my father actually dropped out of another course to do medicine because he couldn't do some other course when he really wanted medicine . it's never late, it's a risky move, but you made it and you succeeded, it's a win

That is an unreal level of commitment. The memorizing, fast tracking med school, committing so hard to the residencies and even the current diet... Idk what's driving you but it's pretty powerful. And rare.
I'm so glad you said that part about medicine being a community. Even in nursing school we had "gunners." I never understood putting others down in school or showing someone up. Some people just don't realize they're going to end up working together as a team after graduation. I was the study group creator in nursing school and found it was easier and more fun to learn as a group and quiz each other on content (snacks included obvi). It was super helpful to learn how my classmates study and tips for studying more effectively. Boards are hard, but having a study buddy makes it easier.

I started Pharmacy school 4 years ago when you posted this video. I’m finishing up my undergrad in nursing. I’ve been an LPN for 6 years, and I’ve wanted to be a doctor since I started working in internal med. I love medicine so much. This really helped relieve my anxiety, I feel so overwhelmed. Thank you!
My mom fell incredibly I'll when I was 10-12 and the doctors that were available to us at that time were not right...
They prescribed the wrong medications which agrevated her condition. It started out as high blood pressure, then stomach ulcer than an "unknown disease" and they sent my mom home.
As a child and the oldest, since my dad wasn't around at that time I had to take care of her and my little sister. That time I was forced to grow up faster. I had to cook, clean and wash and all that stuff my mom would do
I also missed a lot of school days for this reason.
I remember I used to wake up in the middle of the night and put my hand on my mom's forehead to check her temperature, I would lose sleep just to make sure she was okay.
That motivated me because I was scared of losing my mom. When she got better I thought about all the other kids whose moms have passed because the doctors couldn't help enough...
I wanted to be the one who helps in a way... I wanted to make sure to be involved in that whole process.
This is why I want to be a doctor...🤗
That is such a good reason and you could totally use it in a personal statement. I hope you're all doing better now.
This. This is amazing. Best of luck, and u got this
I could say the same with me actually, my father fell ill I didn’t need to take care of siblings and my dad but he did go to the hospital and needed a triple bypass surgery, the doctors that took care of my dad weren’t the best. They wanted my father to go back to work when he was clearly not ready and his scars weren’t healed properly and my dad was doing a very physical job. He ended up getting a heart attack and passed away almost 2 years ago. From that day I want to become a surgeon and try to help the people in need since I don’t want anyone going though what I’ve been through. We have almost the same reason why we want to be a doctor, this is the first time someone has close to the same story that I have. 😁
An amazing boy's story! Your Mum had an angel... God bless you!!!!!!
You got this!!
how the heck do you manage youtube and a full time doctor

holy hell this is me af. ive never laughed so hard at a comment
I went into it for the right reasons( I love medicine, love science, want to help people, ect), I just didn't realize how stressful it would be or how bad I was at chemistry. I've struggled with a host of mental health issues all my life and they probably will continue for the rest of my life(I've been on meds and in therapy since the age of 9, I am now 21, I'm thinking is going to be lifelong). Medical school would kill me. After that I was considering either nursing or speech therapy, eventually I decided on speech therapy. I hope to graduate with my bachelor's in the spring of 2023 and then head to grad school.
I love hearing about your experiences. It shows the kind of person you are when you do a video like this, explaining what you did and giving advice for the future generation. Keep on doing you!

I'd really love to go into a medical career. Chances are not a surgeon, but I'd love to be a doctor in some way. I've really only just started highschool, so I don't really understand all the routes or classes I'd have to take just yet. The only worries for me are, 1) what specifically do I want to pursue? All I know is I'd like to be a doctor. yikes. And 2) the cost. Colleges would take a lot of money and I don't want to have any student loan debt.
No matter what field of study you pursue, there's always going to be some student loan debt. My famiy used our savings to pay for my first and second year, i had to work and use grants and loans to pay for 3rd and 4th year, including my master's. Then you just pay it back little by little every month just like any visa or line of credit
I am slightly younger and I am pretty much in the same situation as you

I graduated BS Pharmacy (a 4 years course) then go to medical school right after I graduated. Now i'm a 4th year medical student (clerkship/clinical internship/junior intern) here in the philippines. Now its lockdown we were pulled out in the hospital after 9 months ( because of our safety we are not yet licensed doctors without having hazard pay yet or insurance if something happens to us because of covid 19, and our university is liable if something happens) of straight duties without absent, tho I have still 3 months rotations left. Now i'm preparing for my revalida exam to spare my time and to be productive somehow. Being honest with you all, for the past 24 days of being self isolated, living in my apartment alone and far from family resulting to depression and unproductivity. Now i'm watching your vids to feed my passion again and not to lose my track. Medicine is very stressful, and challenging. That's why it's very interesting and inspiring to continue this craziest career in the world every day. Medicine is a lifetime learning and passion. Keep pushing guys!

Remember we all have different starting points. Don't beat yourself up and use him as inspiration. Good luck with your science study! I want to go on an anatomy course but can't afford it right now. So I'm learning a lot from secondhand books and yt videos so that when I do the course I'm likely to be more successful :)
It is a great opportunity to use your time wisely & study what you may learn in the course. That way you're ahead. I used that same tactic with my Health & Fitness course & people saw I knew what I was talking about. Good luck with your future successes, friend :)
PRINCE_LC best of luck to you too :)
Well, he did say his entire family are doctors. We can look at someone like him and say he alone was responsible for his success but there's more to it: family influence and support plays a huge role, good nutrition for brain development etc. As he was saying, school shouldn't be your entire life and your job shouldn't be *your* entire life. Enjoy your life and give 100% in everything you do, even if you are working in retail. It's a great opportunity to learn about customers and a business which can be parlayed into your work as a personal trainer.
I know this is an older video, but I love these types of videos where you can just put headphone in and listen to the person talk about whatever while your doing something. Which is weird because I don’t really like podcast but I love going on UA-cam and listening to UA-camrs stories especially yours!
You're an inspiration! I'm a psychology student looking to enter med school when I'm finished my undergrad. The way you portray yourself in this video reminds me the amount of growth I'm still capable of. Comparing you to me is like comparing myself to a 12-year-old version of myself. While our neuroplasticity may be decreasing, the enthalpy of our minds is still increasing. I find your success to be not only humbling but comforting in the fact that we can still grow so much throughout our 20s and adult lives.
And yes, I know I write like a nerd -- 🤓
Have this to put your minds at ease: "No cap, Dr. Mike. This video's bussin!"
Reallyyyy? That motivated me, because I'm 20 and still really struggle to learn...
@@leiciKeksfan that is totally okay. that is what makes us human. we all learn differently at different paces and stages. sometimes it takes a little more time but that's why taking things step by step is so important. and slow progress is still progress
@@strawverymilktae1280 Thank you for trying to cheer me up 🥺
@@leiciKeksfanof course ☺️
2020 I want to become a Doctor. I will come back here if I am officially a Doctor. Help me God😇
Good luck
You got this!
We believe in you!!
You can do it!! Go ahead and get your dreams! ❤
So do I but maybe a vet will be better for me as you can see from my profile
My dad did the exact same thing, he came from Egypt and went through medical school again in his 40s!!
Fatema Salam that is amazing and really inspirational ❤️
Thank you Dr.Mike for explaining the hurdles to reach where you are today, respect at it's highest👏👏
I really liked hearing your story. Very impactful and honest. I remember way back when I was in grade school I had to do 15 hours community service in order to receive confirmation in my catholic school. So I worked as a candy striper at a hospital. I like it so much I stayed 2 years volunteering and just for a hot second considering a career in medicine. But then I would see a lot of losses even as a volunteer because they would shift me around different departments. And I just realized it was just way too much for me and it wouldn’t be something I could handle. It’s not even anything that can be squeamish it was seeing the tragedies and the losses and you have to have stomach for that. It’s like what you touched upon you have to be human first before anything. Which is why I say and have always said even pre-Covid that those in the medical field are the real superheroes. I commend you truly because a lot of the tips and advice you gave really apply to a lot of fields. You have to love what you do or else you won’t be happy and success will be nil. Thank you for sharing.
I love how real and genuine he is in this video
I got one B+ and two A- in college (UCLA), and the rest were A+ or A. I studied for the MCAT by getting paid to take lecture notes for physics and chemistry undergraduate courses at UCLA. I was the top of my class in medical school. My secret? I studied my butt off. It really doesn't take a genius to become a doctor.
youngsatchmo what do you mean by getting paid to take lecture notes
Fellow bruin here 🐻
I have a few C's. How screwed am I?
mn javed c’s get degrees
franky baybay D's get degrees
Doctor Mike, I loved that you talked so much about BEING HUMAN, verbalizing emotion. Interpersonal communication is so important. ♥️
Your storytelling and description/explanations are amazing and well done. Like i really sat here looking and listening to you for 20+ minutes and didn't get bored or lose attention. Usually ppl would put pop up pictures and/or animation to keep the video lively and entertaining, but you didnt and still kept me interested. You're awesome Dr. Mike
Your dad is goals. Going through medical school not only once, but choosing to go through it a second time...That is purely wanting to educate yourself and aspiring to be the best most efficient doctor he could be. That is truly admirable. I’m thankful that driven people like your father and yourself are health care providers in this country. 🙏🏻
Bruh I started worring about my MCAT at 15
Jonathan Sellers I’m 14 and I’m stressing about it

this is one of the most real talks I have heard
Dr mikes philosophy on the tests is something I’ve done to become a well rounded high school student. He might not read this but I really appreciate this message from you, Dr. Mike!
17:00 Don’t be the sort of person to tell people they’re doing something wrong, ask why they do something differently. You will learn instead of insult.
*this is wholesome*
Thank you for sharing. It's nice to see someone so dedicated to helping others. You seem to truly care about the people you treat. I know my family doctor at times doesn't seem to I don't want to say no are but not care enough. He's the type that is in and out very quickly (which I hate) I sit and wait between getting there and then sitting in a room waiting for him and he's there for maybe 5mins it feels. Thanks for becoming a doctor. Wish you were here in Canada 😀
The best 20 minutes and 35 seconds video on UA-cam. That helped a lot thank you, because I am now at high school last years we call it VCE and I have chosen a particular subjects in the aim to study medicine. And after I watched this video it really helped understand what’s the future is hiding for me after I have chosen to go into medicines. Thank you.
You're about to bust out of that shirt
I feel the same way
Shhh no ones complaining
@@sofifi03 lol you're funny
I'm with @Sophia lol
Ain't no one complaining
Dr.Mike then: "questions ,questions ,questions"
Dr.Mike now: "chest compressions, chest compression, chest compressions"
I’m 15 years old and I’m truly interested in medicine. My goal is to make people feel better, probably save their lives. In any case, thank you for this amazing video!
I wanna become a doctor to change people's live to save it and make it better if not to the best
Call me crazy but after he said, "I watched the lectures at an accelerated speed." I started watching this video at 1.5 speed. Frankly, I found it helpful, I talk fast naturally, and it's usually hard for me to slow down my speech. Hearing things at 1.5 speed, particularly videos, I think will actually help me in the future. Thank you for the amazing tip, Mike!
I’m a naturally fast talker too and I always do that with lectures :)
Did this all through school and it saved me so much time!
I speed up the video when he said that too!!
Hahaa. I did the same 😂
*I would have **_killed_** to have had a resource like YT back in the 1970/1980s!*
This video reminded me why i want to pursue medicine, as an undergrad, i forgot what i was working towards. I love this so much!!
Jhope kpop good luck! I’m going into undergrad soon for pre med.
good luck, ARMY! You can do this!!
same
Well presented! Just discovered your web site today & enjoyed the last episode immensely bc, as a teacher, it covered well the steps in preparing & reaching milestones that open other venues of growth in one's vocation. (ie. medicine) Nice to hear it from a medical standpoint as a teaching certificate also requires levels of growth if one plans to be of any benefit to their students and a life-long experience of growth to them. It, too, requires a personal relationship with each student! Well done!
Love you passion for medical field I feel the same way I'm a little older to be starting but, I'm working on my RN & LPN while working at a medical facility and I am reminded daily of my end goal & making sure most days are what I live for changing life's and making a difference
Oh man, listening to your dad's teaching method is a staple Russian parenting right there. Which is while tough can be very rewarding later on.
Diana Son + Very much agree Diana. I'm very hard on my kids with school, being respectful, etc. I've had many people over the years tell me I'm too hard on them. My children are now 16 and 12. We have a very close and loving relationship and they're so respectful of others, especially to me and they're kind, smart, genuinely good kids. I always say how lucky I got. They're still so young and we've hit bumps in the road and continue to grow as a family but I couldn't be more proud or feel more blessed. People always compliment me on how respectful they are, it always makes me feel proud. We're not perfect at all but I couldn't be more proud of them💜
I have watched literally over a hundred videos about medschool related stuff and have been confident sometimes that I can get through but utterly stressed and depressed other times. I am currently a senior in highschool, and I don't have the best grades, but hell I have been working my ass off trying to figure out how to succeed in school and applying to schools. This video literally brought me to tears; it is exactly what I needed to hear. It gave me hope- thank you so much.
Saaaaammeeee!!
It’s crazy I’m in the same exact place as you rn 🤦🏾♀️
seethal doki + This was such an endearing comment. Hope you're doing well❣
This does not just help in med school, these are life lessons that help you
Dr. Mike has had a big impact on my life. He’s always teaching me new things while laughing at medical memes, and most importantly he inspired me to become a doctor or specifically a veterinarian! He’s just so nice and so positive and he always makes the best videos and I’m just so happy he’s on UA-cam. I’m just in middle school and I want to go into medical school and he just goes to show me what it’s like! Oh and Dr. Mike if your seeing this, do you know if I go to like let’s say, UNF or FSU, do they have medical classes? Anyways, thank you for lighting up my way Dr. Mike.
This is the best video I've seen on Medicine and Medical school so far! I just graduated Med school from India & I'm now preparing for the post-graduation exams to pursue Residency . My field of interest is Psychiatry. My brother is doing his Family Medicine residency in India & he loves it !! I love how passionate you are about this field & how pure your heart is :) I wish to meet you one day whenever I visit US. God bless you :) The Medical community is blessed to have someone like you. You're my inspiration :)
What does family medicine pertain to in India.. I am studying in 3rd proff.. Is it medicine or community medicine??
Me too..
