3 DIY Mosquito Trap Comparison Yeast vs Soap vs Borax
Вставка
- Опубліковано 16 лип 2018
- I compared 3 DIY Mosquito traps that are mentioned heavily in articles and videos across the internet to kill and get rid of Mosquitoes. I used traps using yeast, soap, and borax. The results are kind of predictable. You can use big fan with a Mesh to catch mosquitoes which uses a lot of energy or buy a mosquito magnet device that attracts and kills mosquitoes. However, the best way to repel mosquitoes is to plant herbs like lavender, mint, basil, rosemary, and thyme.

Let me know if any mosquito trap you tried worked for you. Here is the update to this video with improvement to the traps and a DIY Trap that actually works: ua-cam.com/video/xzreXPlMV7Q/v-deo.html
Daisy Creek Farms Do notify us about it.
Hello Jag, I was watching few of your videos about mosquito and ants problem in your backyard, I was wondering if you ever tried garlic spray for mosquito and also I try sugar/boric acid/water mix for the ants problem , ants are completely gone.
Thanks for all of your informative videos.
Good luck
I spent a whole summer out in the middle of nowhere in hot humid weather as a camp nurse and got 2 mosquito bites without using anything. After inquiring I learned they had several bat boxes around the property. Bats apparently really like to eat mosquitos. If you live in the city, this may not work for you but you could always ask your local DNR, or extension office. Also, this year I've used peppermint & vanilla spray and it seems to work but the mosquitoes aren't really out yet here.
Thanks for the update!
Jag check your property for standing water sources and get rid of the water. I notice the mosquito you have in one of the videos is an Aedes species. These mosquitos tend to develop in small items holding water around the yard. Check with your local vector control district to see what they can do.
Terro for ants
Hot damn. A UA-camr approached something scientifically and had the integrity to post negative results. Subscribed.
ditto
Hopefully saw his follow up: ua-cam.com/video/xzreXPlMV7Q/v-deo.html . Legit methods.
And I.
These don't trap, they drink and fly and die. He's a UA-camr with no idea what he is doing
@@bryanpinta6557 agree

Those are tiger mosquitoes!
They come from a tiger mom.
Haha They are very smart watching UA-cam !

No mosquitoes were harmed during the making of this video
Dang it 😔

When you realize you have much more likes than the UA-camr
That's sad.
I just cut off a piece of my skin and put it in a bottle. It WORKS!!
Nah I cut my limbs and put them in a bottle
😂 funny
Mosquitoes aren't attracted to skin
They are attracted to breath
That is how it's done. My man!
@@harrid14mei yes, that's why to get mosquitoes to not bite me I dont breathe
You know, I'm disappointed that I watched a video where none of the traps work.
But really, this is useful information. Thanks for posting it.
Was completely useless as THEY AREN'T TRAPS!!
2:51 Bug actually lands on his hand as he is holding trap. Huge slap to the face.
There’s an annoying ass mosquito that’s been dissipating my sleep for weeks.. I swear I killed this thing like 5 times
We will travel to Mars soon but can't get rid of mosquitos.
Thanks for taking the time to experiment, document it and share your results.
Did a 5.8 mile hike on the bold coast trail in maine yesterday, June 24th. Supposedly its been raining for weeks up here. We were sprinting the last 2.8 miles from swarms of mosquitoes. We all have 100s of bites. So far none of us are sick.
Keep in mind that spraying neem oil around the yard actively endangers pollinators. My wife and I use it for some pests, but we're very careful not to use it near any flowers/pollen sources- and even then, pollinators do land on random leaves, stalks, etc. so are still at risk.
i plant pot, they never come around, but they attract cops😳
🤣😂🤣
what did you planted ???
Weed
Should live in Canada - you can legally have (only) 4 cannabis plants growing in your yard :-p
😂lol😂
In addition to adding sugar to the yeast bottle for food, you have to use water that is about 110°F to activate the yeast.
Used your comment in the new video :) Made a new video by improving these traps and placing these traps in the dark and also made a DIY mosquito trap that works ua-cam.com/video/xzreXPlMV7Q/v-deo.html
very labor-intensive, props to your scientific process of making multiple bottles in various places!
It's hardly labor intensive lol
If you really want to catch mosquitoes in the vicinity and willing to spend some money for it, mosquito magnet truly works.
Thank you for your honest research. Personally I would buy a mosquito magnet. It is better to attract all of them into a trap. They’re outside all the time and I’m outside part of the time.
Love the scientific approach. I am going to have my grandsons watch this and make some "traps" to see if we can find something that works. Excellent presentation.
Suzanne Jefferson dose that work have you done it? aA few mosquitos are in my house and kept me up all night buzzing lol I’m willing to try anything at this point for sleep 😂
Great videos, thanks for your testing and informed feedback on what works and just as importantly what doesn’t.
What works? Screens, long sleeve shirts, and water with soap in a spry bottle takes mosquitos out of mid air and they drop like rocks.
Clear colored clothes help a lot.
Just stumbled on this. Great comparison. Thanks for doing this video
This is hilarious to me, because I have been making homemade mosquito traps for years now, and THEY WORK GREAT!!! I use Yeast, Brown Sugar, and Water. That's all!! Except one thing different. I use black construction paper to wrap the plastic bottle. The mixture of brown sugar and yeast produces CO2, which is what attracts the mosquitos (and other insects looking for blood) CO2 oozes from our pores, and from our breath. This mosquito trap works. Im not sure what your problem was/is.
I don't think he used all 3 ingredients in one trap. He only used yeast and water, no sugar or brown sugar. You need to add the sugar and yeast to create the CO2.
Any chance you could post your amounts of the ingredients you use? Or maybe even a quick video on making your setup?
I didn't catch not even one mosquito with the same trap, maybe it depends on the mosquito type, or maybe the yeast used does not have the component required, the only difference is that I see is that I used regular sugar
Thank you for giving the reasons why certain ingredients and processes were used. Explaining the logic makes you very credible.
I have 2 basil plants, a lavender plant, rosemary, thyme, and mint growing in an indoor tent, and I have mosquitos problems in the tent.
Very informative and thanks for sharing your experiment 😊
1. Boil water with sugar, set aside until warm
2. pour into contraption
3. Place the yeast
4. Cover sides with black or blue cloth or paper (mosquitoes are attracted by those colors)
5. Place in a corner or somewhere dark.
6. Imitate a demon's evil laugh
7. Check after a week
Thank you for your advise, I'm going for a huge bugwacker now, I know they work 👍🏻😍
the water and soap trap should be much larger. Your goal with that trap is to mimic a laying pool for the mosquito to lay the larva in. Once the mosquito trays to land on the water due to the soap breaking the water tension it won't be able to land on the water and it will drown. A wheel barrel full of water with some soap mixed in (no bubbles on the surface of the water though) and that will be way more effective than a small bottle of water.
Lol as if I can just leave that size lying around in my house 🤣 but if I gotta do that I’ll do it
nice logic dudeeee
I have 3 of these on my terrace. I painted the outside black since mosquitos like to hide in dark places. I used yeast and brown sugar and it works. Once a week I empty them, wash the base and refill them. You have to put the bottle top upside down like a funnel. once they are in they can't get out so they will die.
That's key. The trap has to be dark. This guy's clear bottles are not alluring to mosquitos.
I like the practicable approach proving the methods shown do not work. Thank you!
This was a great video, very informative and helpful. Thanks so much!
Subscribed, because your honest time and effort in making this video.
Thanks for the conclusive info. There are a billion misquitos attacking me everynight. Whats weird is, although its one plant each i have lavander basil ond minl all within 20 ft of where i sit and im getting ate up.
I've had success with fermented bread once. I caught what must have been a few thousand mosquitoes at least. But I've never been able to consistently recreate that one trap, but it works great on flies and earwigs.
edit: Oh! Also, paint or cover the walls of the trap. Mosquitoes are attracted to dark places on hot days.
As a certified applicator, I can say that the reason your traps were flawed was because they were not black. Try painting or covering the bottles and construction paper and try again. There's also a product called in2care, which is a black bucket you fill with water and dissolve some type of mycelium that clings to mosquitoes and makes them infertile. In2care is used by football stadiums, amusement parks, and any other large area where a lot of people are. In2care is expensive, but one bucket will work for a block of 4 homes if positioned probably.
Good thought, i have seen mosquitoes gather in a black bucket. Will give it a try!
At last , an honest guy, ! Speaks the simple truth, 👍🏼
Thanks for taking the time to debunk these useless traps!
They. Are. Not. Traps.
You should test spraying essential oils and planting herbs next, because I am convinced they are similarly ineffective…particularly the herbs. I’ve been bitten by multiple mosquitoes while sitting on a patio surrounded by lemongrass, rosemary, oregano, and other herbs.
With my experience brewing wine it has to be 70 to 86f has to be place in a dark spot and the yeast will eat the sugar and poop out co2 and alcohol but I'd use an are lock so it stays pooping out co2
Super simple and little to no cost, learned from a different video, place water where they thrive but add a drop or so of dawn liquid. It makes the water slippery somehow prevents them laying eggs, or causes them to become infertile. Whatever the reason it works for me
That is a very positive twist on the end.
Love your experiment. Good job!
FYI-The new little ankle biter mosquitos in California don’t mind my mint or rosemary plants. The love hanging out in the rosemary. Just my experience.
Great test-thanks for sharing.
Damn I can’t believe those little suckers got to California! I suffered with those things in Sri Lanka like crazy.
Excellent Video, Well Done!!
It's the Basil that's why the Mosquitos are back. The last couple of years I had a Basil plant growing by the back patio, it died this last winter and I got rid of it. That's why the Mosquitos are back!!
Maybe the little suckers went on vacation until the traps are gone🤔😂😒
Thanks for the testing & sharing.
Sweet and to the point. Great video! Bravo 👏
I'm in East Africa and still waiting for the locals to discover the common window screen. Should be any day now.
I have screens but they do not work if I venture outside!!
@@ritacouchcooper2842 I have screens and they do not work INSIDE.
Jag Singh, well investigated and presented. One of the best, especially from India. Well done !
you must paint the whole bottle BLACK. to attract the mosquitoes. clear bottles will be ignored by the mosquitoes.
Why?
@@m00shmallow81 mosquitos are attracted to dark colours, and dont like light colours.
Paintend it is also for the yeast so the sun's UV doesnt kill it.
How does this make a difference at nighttime?
@@kingrhun apparently mosquitoes are not very active at night
Thanks for an honest test and info. Very informative
I've used the yeast one before, inside the house. It definitely works, but can take up to 24 hours to catch that really annoying mosquito you can't seem to catch.
Very well done, sir!
Though you might want to try this indoors, as it may be different. From my experience, I can't have a glass of soda or milk without a lid, without finding one or two mosquitos in it after a while. I also left some clothing dipped in water once with clothing soap, and it attracted quite a few, which was unfortunate in that case. Not saying the traps should work effectively. I have no idea. I'm just saying they might have some effect indoors.
Great video. Great methods. Legend. Actually helpful. Thank you.
Good video . . . Love the Pure, Honesty, as well as the thoroughness of your test
What?!?!? He didn't even know what he was testing!!!! The fact you found it informational and intelligent is the truly scary thing
Basil dont work on mosquito... i plant basil in my raise bed... everytime i go around that area 4-5 mosquitos fly around my legs... i even try rubbing basli on my legs and mosquitoes still dont give a F.
Same problem here! Thanks so much for your time.
You had me as soon as you went to the 3x3 experimentation model - scientific method!
In this world, have to be factual, and have right data! Glad you caught it :)
finally someone who did a real test on mosquito traps, ad and a real good video. Nice work !
Those carbon dioxide things work, and work BIG time. Believe me! I found that out several years ago when I was invited to my brother-in-laws annual 4th of July BBQ just outside Houston Texas. (I'm a Southern California girl where the climate is usually quite dry.) We arrived several days in advanced and stayed at his house for a two week vacation. Every time we went outside in the early evening, when it was comfortable enough to be outside, we were attacked by skeeters! He had huge puddles that would not dry out on his acreage that were filled with mosquito larvae by the thousands, due to the rain that falls often in that part of the country that simply never dries out. He never did a thing to try to get rid of them because they are everywhere. Not just on his acreage, but on everyone's. During the hours of the BBQ he set up a carbon dioxide attraction and trapping device away from the people. Not one of us were bother by mosquitoes the entire time that device was running When most people left, and he turned the device off, we were fresh meat for the taking again!
Hi, do you remember which specific brand/model the device he used was?
@@damagecontrol7 No I don't. All I remember is it was a machine that he plugged in and it was pretty large. I used to search the internet trying to find one but to no avail.
@@jazzcatt it was probably one of these "Mosquito Magnet MM4200B Patriot Plus Mosquito Trap"
@@ericvu4195 I don't think so. The machine wasn't a trap. All it did was emit carbon dioxide. It was also noisy. This was at least 30 years ago.
90% of all the quick tip videos on youtube are copies of other videos and most of them don't work, or can even damage your appliances or home because.
Pro Tip. Baking soda and vinegar work about as well as baking soda and water because the baking soda neutralizes the vinegar.
Pro Tip 2. Using oven cleaner of any harsh chemical on a plastic tub will ruin the tub.
Thank you, for doing this, I was going to do this. I do not want to attract them.
You need warm water to activate it and need dark cover
What type of dark cover
Thanks for the info. UA-cam should follow your honesty & integrity. God bless you
Thank you from France here nowadays it's the tiger mosquito and it's a plague. Thanks for your time and effort.
Mosquitoes like it dark, so a Japanese guy tried the yeast and put the bottle in a black bag that seem to work . I do catch more that way. I have mint and mint balm planted here also. Gutter guard after rain also keeps them away.
Good idea, i will try keeping the traps dark next time.
Made a new video by improving these traps and placing these traps in the dark and also made a DIY mosquito trap that works ua-cam.com/video/xzreXPlMV7Q/v-deo.html
I have found up, that temporarily Vicks Vapour rub actually works. 👍🏻
BENJAMIN agree while camping I put it in the lobes of my ears and keeps them away from my face pretty much. Since I’m camping I don’t care if I smell like mentholated.
You crushed my hopes.... with an experiment. Well thanks for saving me the efforts! I'll plant some basil!
Thank You Jag, That saved me time from trying the experiment.
The soap you used has a 'citrus scent', which is one of the most well-known mosquito repellants (i.e. use unscented soap)
good thought, the scent could have changed the results on the other traps as they were so close together! we need a retest without the soap
I sometimes hang clothes out on my patio to dry. The next morning they are covered with mosquitos. I have to shake them off before I take the dry clothes inside. So maybe hanging up a sheet of fabric with a tacky surface might work.
are you using fabric softener? They heavily attract mosquitos. I learnt from experience
Seltzer water!!! Unscrew the lid a little so it slowly leaks out- and set it in the yard away from your gathering when youre outside. Lasts 3 hours or so.
This combined with running the fan with screen and using essential oils and planting vegetation mosquitoes hate, are all good ways to catch them! Cheers- great video!
Placing them on the grounday have been a problem. Spartan mosquito control devices work fairly well. The container is dark and it hangs from the tree. Apparently, it's a yeast, sugar and pinch if salt mixture.
@@micheleb2558 nice! Thanks for the tip!
Gotta love the herbs
Great video, short succinct and very informative
Good video. I tried traps too and none of them worked.
Thanks for trying it out for us! I really need a solution. Mosquitos are feting bad around here this summer.
Thank you for saving me the time and trouble.
Herbs are also inefective. I have 2 HUGE rosemary plants in my front garden and the are always filled with mosquitos. Also in my back garden i have 1 huge basil plant, same story.
I experimented with this, same result as yours, so I found quiet a few ways to repel mosquitoes. One is to pick stems of herbs and then burn the herb stems, that works! will be posting a video soon!
The mossies in my garden love lavender and rosemary 😌 I often find swarms of them in there.
You should put Black shade cloth around your traps, or put a dark sock around the bottle to make the trap look like dark standing water. You will have better luck. If the traps are too bright, they will not be inviting for mosquitos.
Your the best, I can't believe I found your video.
Spray diluted dettol at the entrance or on body. Miracle
I have a Bell and Howell bug zapper that works well at reducing the number of bugs, still use coils when working when Mosquito's are bad.
Good experiment. Saved me time.
Well done thanks!
Thank you. Very informative
You have to use hot water with the yeast trap . The reaction causes carbon dioxide which mosquitos can detect from about 75 feet . Our exhalations is what attracts the pesky bug .
First to do this kind of test - you need to ensure you have mosquitos to catch -his garden didn't look like he was likely to have a lot of mosquitos - I would suggest placing those three bottles around standing water and check the results after mosquitos start forming in the water
Thank you. That was awesome
Extensively informative video
I've been finding a lot of dead mosquitoes in my kitchen around the area where there was a puddle of soapy water. I think they either got thirsty and drank it or landed there and got stuck
Great scientific approach, well done
I myself attract mosquitoes. I do notice that whenever I'm using a tablet, that the light attracts mosquitoes on the face around the eyes. I concluded they're attracted to the light. Which is one of the premises those electric catchy mosquitoes traps work really well when I put a bottle of the yeast sugars solution next to it. So what happens I'm guessing is that the small reverse fan on the catching mosquito is drawing the air smell being emitted from the yeast bottle.. along with the light being emitted and in a week's time I will have more than 30 mosquito caught on the sticky katchy insert. I also noticed that I wasn't being harassed by mosquitoes while using my tablet anymore. So three elements the yeast air along with the light being emitted from the catchy mosquito suction device all play into an effective mosquito trap for me. Hope this helps.
Very Informative. Thank you from NE 🇮🇳
Looks like I’m gonna have to plant a herb garden in my room.
I have herbs planted all around my yard. I also have 1 million mosquitos all around my yard. So many that they are coming in the house. Herbs don’t work. I’ve had mild success in the past with cedar based yard sprays, but the only thing I’ve found to be really effective for mosquitoes is putting mosquito dunks in any nearby standing water and on moist soil. (I haven’t done that yet this year…thus the 1 million mosquitos currently in my yard and house.)
Also, soap, water, and vinegar work great if you ever have a fruit fly problem in your house.
I got like 50 dead mosquitoes in my water/soap trap...
You put yeast in the trap?
J, thank you so much for sharing n right to the 🎯
The camera is so good that it looks like a blue/green screen footage..
