When i lived in Honolulu in 87/88 I had a 79 Datsun station wagon that had an AM/FM radio....no tape deck....I would come across Kalapana on the radio searching for stations and stop when I heard their stuff along with the Beamer Bros. .....I am a white guy from NY, but knew this was bad ass music when I heard it....
Hell yeah, i grew up listening to this. My dad bumped all the Oldies, n this one brings back a lot of good memories. Glad to have grown up listening to real music n not this garbage that we have on the Airways today.
I first heard this song while stationed on Oahu the late 70's. I learned to hang-glide there and have flown to this beautiful music for decades. They wrote the song after meeting pilot in the landing area next to Sea Life Park below Makapuu Ridge.
Just came back from Kalapana Concert. Still beautiful songs and beautiful band members minus Mackey, who we all still miss. Your music still lives on bruddah!
Naturally, Wailua Sky, Honolulu City Lights, and that Far Too Wide GTE Hawaiian Tel commercial brings me back to this heavenly place we call home every single time.
What makes me most depressed is that Mackey was such a beautiful person and got so screwed over so badly by someone who he loved and he could not bear to hang on. Also that he never received the writing praises nor commercial success that Kalapana were due. I can't blame him for giving up though this world has some dark forces lurking behind pretty faces, law makers and law enforcement sometimes. He really got a bad deal and his punishment truly did not fit the crime. Shameful of both his wife and the system. My only hope is that he is at peace and God's forgiveness was granted for his own suicide.

I love this song! I was blessed to have been able to see them perform at the Waikiki Shell in Honolulu many years ago! It was heaven!
Beautiful music, timeless.
Makes me remember my childhood living on Oahu in the mid-70s thru 80's...simpler and more innocent days back then...
Makes me smile and laugh about things we used to do in those good ole days.

I saw them when I lived with my Aunt and Uncle Scott my Uncles brother was in the group his name was Curt Thompson still love there music.
If he was your uncle's brother, wouldn't that make Curt your uncle, as well, or was your Uncle Scott just someone you called uncle?
