Mike Skinner's recordings as the Streets marked the first attempt to add a degree of social commentary to Britain's party-hearty garage/2-step (and later grime) movement. Skinner was initially an outsider in the garage scene. Although his initial recordings appeared on Locked On, the premiere source for speed garage and 2-step from 1998 to the end of the millennium, he listened first to hip-hop, then house and jungle.

The Streets biggest hits include “Blinded By The Lights”, “Dry Your Eyes”, “Don’t Mug Yourself”, “Fit But You Know It”, “Let’s Push Things Forward” and “Has It Come To This”. The iconic Streets catalogue also includes the albums “Original Pirate Material”, “A Grand Don’t Come For Free”, “The Hardest Way to Make an Easy Living”, “Everything Is Borrowed” and “Computers and Blues”.

    Lyrics:
"I'm really okay, thanks, there's nothing to witness"
I said as I looked back from the edge of the cliff
The old man looking down leant over the ridge
Just looked with a grin as if a blessing had hit him
I slumped on the jut of the cliff:
"Just leave me alone, this is none of your business"
"I will", said the old man, "but just one thing"
And what he said was so lovely it stunned me
He said: "I lay right there once at the edge of the rock
I was ready to jump, I was ever so lost
But this gentleman stopped and said something I never forgot"
    [Hook]
For billions of years since the outset of time
Every single one of your ancestors' survived
Every single person on your mum and dad's side
Successfully looked after and passed onto you life
What are the chances of that like?
It comes to me once in a while
And everywhere I tell folk it gets the best smile
And then the old man walked away and out of sight
Til the sound of him hiking turned to the sound of silence
I just froze in a profound surprise
And from down on my pride I found a smile to my eyes
And for many days again I've been passing the same cliff
And on many occasions I'd chance on the same thing
Laying in the moss, in the same way I was
Would be another man looking like he needed a change of luck
So I'd say: "I lay right there once at the edge of the rock
I was ready to jump, I was ever so lost
But this gentleman stopped and said something I never forgot"
    [Hook: Repeat x2]

A real inspiration. I met Mike in coffee shop in Amsterdam in 2003, I never knew who he was or heard his music. I was sitting at the bar by myself, when he asked if I would care to join him at a table. Best decision I ever made, that day changed my life. I couldn't thank Mr. Skinner enough to this day.

Mr Skinner I wish I had the right words to tell you my deep gratitude for being there for most of my adult life. you've made me laugh out loud, burst into tears, explode with joy, remember old friends, and reconnect with life... last year I tracked down a friend that I fell out with in 2008 always weighed heavy on my heart. I didn't have the words to start that conversation so first I sent them this song. 5 minutes later we were talking like not a day had passed...you were part of the soundtrack to our friendship and you were the catalyst to bring us back together - we missed sharing our 30th year on earth but we will share our 40th in 2020. and we will play your tunes. every day counts. you've changed my life, and I think of you as my brother. At the beginning of this century there was a lovely Brummie named Mike, we hung out ata few small club nights with good tunes and crew. When I first heard your music I was almost convinced you were that same guy, because he was genuine and poetic and looked out for everyone. I'm still glad I hugged that geezer and thanked him... use that as vicarious thanks
Sending big love and hugs from Perth, Western Australia. Erin

    Those words/thoughts saved me everytime...
Even though the thought of just letting go feels so comforting and the dark place you set up for yourself seems calming and warm, until you realize that your warm nest, your dark hole, your safe-spot has never been safe at all...
Reaching out to someone close isn't easy and you fear that if you do, they will think differently about you or you're afraid to reach for help because you don't want to be a burden....
Please try to talk to someone close! They rather listen to your problems than your eulogy! You would be missed and you mean a lot to someone! Stay strong

@Dirty Duck this new stuff is nothing compared to their original stuff but that's always been his style and genuinely one of the greatest British artists of all time imo. Certainly lyrically completely unique. Maybe over your head matey

This song is connected to so many memories in my life I can’t help but think how much more life has to give. Please people if that terrible thought ever comes to your head just remember all the things you havent done yet, the amazing people you haven’t met, places you haven’t been, foods you haven’t tried... there’s so many reasons to keep going.

This poem, these lyrics. this song has saved my life more times than I can count. I've been at the edge of the cliff so many times and this always reminds me that it's important to carry on... to pass that message along. So grateful for you my friend. As I struggle through this world-finding myself on the edge of that cliff more times than I can count... I remember my ancestors, my family, my friends, who have all found themselves there at the edge of the rock. IT IS MY JOB to say, "for millions of years since our ancestors survived.... Here we are doing the best we can to save each other/help in this difficult/harsh world.
Thank you for these lyrics my dear friend! Words can save lives.
This is my anthem. My favorite song in the world.. I hope you know how important your words are.

Mike Skinner and the Streets were the Jam of their day. Skinner's lyrical prowess can only be compared to Paul Weller....genius.

I met Mike Skinner in London at Rough Trade East in Brick Lane he was signing albums. It was a dream come true. I told him how much I loved this song and he said started to perform this song again. Hopefully, I can see him perform this song in his London gig in November.

"I'm really okay, thanks, there's nothing to witness"
I said as I looked back from the edge of the cliff
The old man, looking down, leant over the ridge
    Just looked with a grin
As if a blessing had hit him
I slumped on the jut of the cliff
    "Just leave me alone
This is none of your business"
"I will, " said the old man, "But, just one thing"
And what he said was so lovely it stunned me
He said, "I lay right there once at the edge of the rock
    I was ready to jump
    I was ever so lost
But, this gentleman stopped and said something I never forgot"
For billions of years since the outset of time
Every single one of your ancestors survived
Every single person on your Mum and Dad's side
Successfully looked after and passed onto new life
What are the chances of that like?
It comes to me once in a while
And everywhere I tell folk it gets the best smile
And then the old man walked away and out of sight
'Til the sound of him hiking turned to the sound of silence
I just froze in a profound surprise
And from down on my pride, I found a smile to my eyes
And for many days again I'd be passing the same cliff
And on many occassions I'd chance on the same thing
    Laying in the moss
In the same way I was
Would be another man looking like he needed a change of luck
So I'd say, "I lay right there once at the edge of the rock
    I was ready to jump
    I was ever so lost
But, this gentleman stopped and said something I never forgot"
For billions of years since the outset of time
Every single one of your ancestors survived
Every single person on your Mum and Dad's side
Successfully looked after and passed onto new life
What are the chances of that like?
It comes to me once in a while
And everywhere I tell folk it gets the best smile
For billions of years since the outset of time
Every single one of your ancestors survived
Every single person on your Mum and Dad's side
Successfully looked after and passed onto new life
What are the chances of that like?
It comes to me once in a while
And everywhere I tell folk it gets the best smile
