    Apparently there was a city on the Balearic Islands that lasted up until the reign of Leo VI

      @@Haris-qo1hxnah bro. You could be built like Rocky but if your fighting a million toddlers you'll eventually fall. Not by those kids being inheirently stronger, but by sheer numbers. It's honestly dumb as shit seeing muslims flex about destroying an enmpire that had already been severly weakened by decades of civil wars, economic, political, and pandemic diseases. It"s like bragging about beating up an elderly chuck norris. Its like "yea I guess you did do that" but nobody is going to praise you for it. That's why nobody "outside of the muslim world" knows/remembers who defeated Heraclius after his 20 year long war with the sassinids, but everyone knows Hannibal. Hannibal fought the Romans at arguably their strongest and it was a pretty even playing field. By the time the muslims get to fighting Heraclius they only had one field army left that was cobbled together from all corners of the empire, and this is post plague of justinian.

    I have my roots in Spain, having a family being from Puerto Rico (former Spanish colony). A shame the Romans were over stretched. From how destabilized the Visigoths were after the murder of Amalaric. If Italy hadn’t taken 20 years to subdue & the Persians just fucked off for more than 5 years than maybe the Visigoths would’ve joined their Ostrogothic kinsmen in being destroyed & reincorporated (not all of Spain, I’m sure Suebi or Basques would’ve expanded)

      @omarrgab1090 Their rule was bad when a bad emperor is ruling, and good when a good emperor is ruling, just like any other nation.
      However, one united Eastern Rome would bring much more stability, peace, and wealth to the region much better than today.

    first off.... the Eastern ROMANS, reconquered Italy and north Africa and parts of Spain....and the plague and famine halted it all. Then the coup of Phocas against Maurice began the near constant decline of the Eastern Roman empire.

    I've always heard after the sack of Constantinople in 1453. The last emperors brothers fled to Italy then gave the Imperial seal & regalia to what would become the Spanish empire's monarchs. Is this true? Has any one else heard of this transfer of power to Spain?

    Imperial administration was restored to a southern coastal strip after Belisarius defeated the Vandals c. 534
    I believe the Visigoths regained control c. 620 but not over the Balearics

      @michaelfebbert737 Рік тому

      I must make a correction. While I was not wrong that some Spanish territory was reconquered after 534, it apparently was not until 20 years later when reinforcements were sent to Italy in the waning years of the long war against the Goths that a contingency of troops were sent to Cartagena to begin a conquest of Spain (Source : W. Treadgold A History of the Byzantine State and Society, p. 211)

It’s unfair that we call many modern cultures and former cultures with their name (or should like bharat) they called themselves Romans and therefore we should refer to them as such. “East Rome” takes a similar amount of time to say as Byzantine. Also in the will of Constantine XI he granted the title of Roman emperor to Ferdinand and Isabella and to this day his majesty Felipe VI is coranated with the official titles of many de jure parts of the Roman Empire
