When you're trying to make stuff out of ROTA (rusty old truck axles) you have to anneal it first. You almost have to bury it in vermiculite or ashes to let it cool. The stuff is harder than un-tempered woodpecker lips. Have a Blessed new year.
You need a little pump in your coolant tank, to keep the coolant slowly moving, to avoid bacteria, keep it running 24/7. A small rotor blade inside the tank will do, to keep it moving.
Great job on the toolpost holders😎👍yeah one always use the flowery language when thread taps break especially smaller sizes more expensive, but yours were on bigger side still a bit more expensive. With those, all that works is a bit of patience and lubricant and a blast of air(not in blind hole)occasionally but i also made that mistake a few times😂 hope you enjoyed Christmas and hope you have a prosperous New year

Nice job Michel. Your "Adult Language" montage was hilarious. I ended up taking that back blade guard off my little bandsaw permanently. I know it will enrage the Workplace Health and Safety types but after the fifth blade derailment in a row, it gets old very quickly.
Michel... something I would do with your coolant before you go to straight oil.... drain you current coolant. Fill it up *COMPLETELY* with water so that it is perhaps 1 liter shy of running over. Fill the last liter with unscented chlorine bleach. The run your coolant for several hours. Drain the water and refill. Run the coolant for several hours and repeat one more time before adding new coolant back in. There is no telling what your coolant did to the disinfectant. Also one other thing to try, if you can source a few silver knives or forks, try dropping those in your sump. Silver is used in the water cooled PC community to cut down on critters in the cooling loop.
Excellent idea. I was about to suggest something similar. Michel, if you can find it in Europe see if you can find one of Hangsturfers' rang of coolants. ( correct spelling) it's an American product and several UA-camrs recommend it. ( see Matty's workshop for details). Do the bleach job to kill the nasties and flush out completely with hot water if you can, and mix up the Hangsturfers coolant. If I remember it's a 10-1 mix
Michel, a great video to end 2023. You have made a really nice job of that. When tapping I always used to tell my students( ex high school metalwork and woodwork teacher) that turn the tap forward about 1/8 th of a turn then turn it back ( this breaks off the chip) one 1/4 of a turn. This ensures that the chip will detach from the workpiece. I see many people on UA-cam videos just turning the tap in non stop. You can do that but only with a tap that will eject the long piece of swarf upwards. If you try to do that on a standard tap even if it HSS it will surely break lol. Definitely switch to cutting oil in the tank, it is a bit expensive but it never goes bad and doesn't damage the machine like emulsion coolants. (It isn't that coolant, rather the water vapor that evaporates out and condensers inside the machine) I had rust issues on both my Schaublin 135 and 13 because coolant.

Michel, have you tried using your forge to heat the axle shaft to "cherry red" and then let it cool as slowly as possible to anneal it? If you do, that can make axle shafts (and other hardened metals) available to you as material for some of your projects. I wish you and your family a Happy New Year!
Rusti, from the sounds of it your coolant problem is from Anaerobic Bacteria, it thrives in a Low Oxygen environment. What I think is happening is the tramp oil is forming a layer over the top of the coolant preventing Oxygen from getting to the coolant and the bacteria is multiplying when it's not being used. My suggestion would be to empty and clean out the Reservoir & Sump then add in a 50/50 mix of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide you can get at any Drug Store/Pharmacy and Water and let it run for a few hours, the hydrogen peroxide will kill the anaerobic bacteria. Then empty the hydrogen peroxide and water solution and refill it with coolant. To prevent bacteria from forming again get a small _Air Bubbler_ like they use in fish tanks, and put it in the Reservoir to pump air in and aerate the coolant when it's not in use. That should prevent the bacteria from forming again. Hope it helps! 👍👍

When I was using a Dixon toolpost I took the easy option and bought the holders, but being in the UK they are pretty easy to find used for not excessive cost, I think I have about 15 of them, some in better condition than others. Have a Multifix to go on my current lathe when I get round to it. Nice work making those, though the height adjuters on the real ones are to a different design.

Good rescue on the broken tap Michel ! I was lucky I could make my toolholders on night shift at work, plus we had the right sized tee slot cutter for the mill ! I bought an Aloris style tool post for my new lathe, they're a lot easier to machine than the Dixon style !

Good job on the tool holders. Its always a bummer breaking a tap. I always drill a tiny bit bigger than specification for tapping if the part is not a critical holding one. I have a Prosaw bandsaw which looks exactly the same as yours. It has had very little use in its life but the motor let out the magic smoke. A new motor is £245.00 so not paying that for less than 10 hours use in 2 years. I can buy another cheaper bandsaw for £149.99 so if it lasts more than 10 hours I am on a winner. Those chinese bandsaws are almost, almost worse than useless. I have worked with a good number of them all bigger than yours, mine is I think the next size up. You never seem to able to make them cut, cut straight or finish a job without something going wrong. At one place I worked the saw broke a casting, so I made the executive decision to replace it with a second hand European one. Managed to find an older German one, whose name escapes me now 20 years on, one that was double the price of the chinese rubbish and had been refurbished. All we ever did with it was change the blades and coolant. Well worth the extra brass.
Information: Since i killed 4 thread taps 2 Week ago i bought a "Tapmatic" and started to use some "Rapsöl" and chainsawbar-oil as cuttingoils also i got some machine taps. Since then 31 holes are taped and no tap is broken in the hole. Think about it. Nice clips btw =) Are you from Switzerland?
Holy smokes....really?? unbelieveable.....how did you do that?. In over 45 Years of machining and thousands and thousands of threads cut, i never broke one tap. Not a single one. The shaper is the ideal machine to do this kind of work.
I changed over to cutting oil many years ago and definitely would not go back to water based coolant.

This is a very cheap machine. But for what I do it works very well.
You can get a camera with smell-O-vision so you can record the smell so those of us watching can smell what you're working on.
