Strange how in the early days of playing, most people grab 2b's to learn stick control. For me, it lasted a couple months before finding 5a's. Here I am, 21 years later, going back to 2b's.
I have just recently been getting into the bigger sticks, usually 5B and 2B. I have found that once I got used to the thicker feel of the stick, I find it easier to play as I do not grip them as tight and allow the stick to do more of the work. I'm really liking them so far.
I use the 2B's for practice and the 5B's for gigs/jams and what have you, 5B's feel so effortless and light to swing it's almost fun lol. I'm not really noticing a tone difference but I definitely notice it in my playing,
2b’s sounded great. Just got mine today based on this review and I love them. Feel great, sound great, easier to control the stick on rebounds for finger control. The sticks do the volume work. I ordered another this afternoon. Vic Firth got turned into wood chimes today.
2B just naturally sound fatter and fuller by virtue of their dimensions. I started using this size about a decade or so ago, now anything else feels TINY. If you mainly play rock, especially mid paced groove stuff, the thicker the stick the better. In my opinion.
If for no other reason, I like the 2Bs more because they just fit in my hands better. Not having to close my hand as far is much more comfortable over time.
Easy to get full "gushy splatty' toms with longer, heavier sticks. Also I've found the spherical tip shapes, like an SD1, sound better on the heads but lose a certain something in the cymbals. 7A sticks with acorn tips sound great on cymbals but don't move the skins enough for rock drum tuning unless you REALLY pay attention to your technique. Lately I've found that 5Bs sound great and even SD1s are sounding and feeling better to me when I'm sweeping the kit. Still love my 8Ds, 7As and 5As for tunes that require more cymbal articulation.
Second and fourth tom could use some tuning. I did my own version of this test when I was about 14 years old and couldn't tell a difference. Those are great drums, my friend has a set, the session custom are phenomenal drums!
Think about it. 2Bs are what drummers usually start with, with just a snare drum. We spend lots of money thinking smaller is faster, etc. Right now my favorite is still my Birdseye maple VF bolero, which feel much heavier than their crappy, disgusting, waste of my money new maple products. My next will be fire grain 2Bs even for jazz. Orchestra sticks are heavier than what many companies call today’s rock sticks, just can’t use hard woods on cymbals or you crack the cymbal today. Good review.
The Portnoy sticks dont last long and I'm not a hard hitter. I was totally disappointed in them especially when my 5a La specials last longer than those.
Had to leave this video at the 2 min mark because of the "umms". Drives me crazy, you need at least half decent speaking skills to run a UA-cam channel.

Now if we can find people to buy our light sticks collection.

The 2b's have more volume and a fuller tone. I like the feel of the portnoy's but they break pretty quickly if you like doing alot of rimshots

Good video showing the subtle difference between the lighter and heavier sticks ....
So, 2B or not 2B? I choose 2B. I just found my old pair I bought when I played in school. I've had them about 40 years now.

That snare sounds so good
