Use A Presonus StudioLive w/Motu 24Ai/24Ao AVB Interfaces? Yes!

- This video shows the test hook up with a Presonus StudioLive 24R rack mount console and a Motu 24Ao interface. The hook up includes a Motu AVB switch that connects the computer, console, and interface. This set up will also work with the interface directly connected to the console without the switch.
Excellent! I know this was made a year ago and perhaps you've learned new things and maybe expanded on this idea. I for one was thinking on trying this but first wanted to google and see if anyone was successful. I assume you were after this video was made.
I have a SL32 series III mixer with 32 channels of 2x NSB 8.8 and 1 NSB16.8. Using it as a way to use outboard gear i.e preamps and 500 series compressors etc. It works but the NSBs are huge. I like the 24Ao and Ai for their size. I know they make a 16A with both in and out I was thinking of using but like the future upgradability with the Ai and Ao. (even though they aren't cheap)
Thanks for the video Billy.
Great video - yes I've trodden the path you are on also.... We're on parallel paths / worlds. Had my 2012 MacBook Pro just upgraded to a 2022 also. To the point though, I have my MOTU 24Ao hooked up to a Prosonus NSB168. Similarly to you I have my 24Ao hooked up to a large format console.
My challenge is that Prosonus don't support control of the NSB168 other than through a Prosonus console which I have no interest in (Universal Control software - doesn't work with just the NSB!). I need to reduce the trim on the Prosonus somehow .- enquiries with Prosonus support gave no answer for this . . . I'll have a look at the Hive AVB that Greg Simpson has mentioned, as I think that could solve my clipping issues when I use hefty tube compressors in my live room.
Fun fact, I have the MOTU, working with the Prosonus but I also have the MOTU working with a Prism card via the optical interface . . . so three manufacturers hooked up.
Howdy! I guess it's been a while.
I have a setup working with a 1248, Stage-B16, and StudioLive 32SC. Everything is smooth in terms of their communication. The StudioLive was a later addition that we hope to use to mix live shows, since the original AVB setup was just for recording. My question is, is there any way to control the preamps on the Stage-B16 from the StudioLive? Of all the MOTU devices, the B16 is the only one without front-panel control of such things, and the recording booth with the 1248 and computer is a few flights of stairs away from the mixer location. I guess i can try the tablet apps, but am wondering (wishing, really) if there's any way the PreSonus can control it the way it can a Presonus AVB stagebox.
I also have two MOTU AVB devices (8pre-es and Monitor 8). Since I have a 7.1.4 speaker setup, plus a Tonewinner AT-300 decoder, I was thinking of adding one more MOTU 16A or Presonsus StudioLive 24R and of course some AVB switch.
Somewhat is tempting to have a AVNU Milan compatible AVB switch, but looks like you could hook exactly the devices which I am interested in.
24R had the disadvantages of only 48kHz sampling rate, but is more versatile with all those plugins plus real mic preamps. While a MOTU 16A would be just enough for bringing in and out 12 audio of 7.1.4. I guess 24R can also do this setup. Really thinking what should I choose.
Thank you for this video. Is it possible to control gain on NSB devices without a Presonus mixer? Let's say i want to use only a NSB with Motu over AVB. Thanks!
We have a 32r in our church and we're almost out of channels. Can I use a 24Ai to add inputs through AVB?
Yes. However the 24AI’s inputs are line level. You will need a preamp for microphones.
have you toyed with Hive AVB controller to poke around with the AVB settings on each device?
Hey Greg, I’m actually not familiar with it! I will totally check it out. Thanks for the heads up!!
do you have any videos on how to set up avb in a macbook pro
Not specifically, but this video shows a lot of the back end set up and troubleshooting: ua-cam.com/video/vIRHkbTm8h8/v-deo.html
Great video, thanks for that! :)
Have you experienced any drop outs or sudden loss of connection so far while running the system for more than a few minutes? Cause that's what I'm hearing a lot about as the main issue when hooking up Presonus and MOTU devices.
If you are hearing clicks / pops / dropouts - this is a time code issue. Make sure all your devices are set at the same time ex: 44.1 on all devices, and only one device is set as the master clock.
Yeah sure it must be some kind of clock issue. But you didn't have any problems during recording or live mixing while the system was all set up correctly and running well? I've heard of people complaining about sudden loss of connection and quite a few seconds of reconection time. 🤔
Check this video out. It will show what the clock settings on each device should be: ua-cam.com/video/vIRHkbTm8h8/v-deo.html
I returned the 8M for our church. We were going to use it as the interface for getting our Presonus system into a separate room over the network for a DAW broadcast mix. From my troubleshooting, any time I adjusted gain at FOH, we lost connection. Our setup required the 64S mixer at FOH to be the network clock master. If the 8M would have worked for us, it would have been a perfect setup.
Binge watching your videos atm. On the path of the AVB myself, wandering, can you hook up Presonus 24R directly into you MacBook and send playbacks/tracks/click for IEM via different channels from DAW?
Hi Alexandr, thanks for watching! Yes, you can hook up the 24R up to your computer via USB and it behaves like any interface. I use Nuendo, it shows up as 24 in / 24 out for me. I did a 15 min mix video where I took a session and sent each track from Nuendo directly into the 24R to show what it sounded like, which is the same routing style you are referencing. It was very easy to set up.
@@billylaguardia thanks for your response. You doing God's work with all these videos, keep'em going!
Do you always need an AVB-Hub? I have a 32R and would like to hook up a small MOTU AVB Interface, would be nice if I could do a direct connection...
You can hook up a single interface without an AVB switch. You only need a switch with 2 or more interfaces.
Also, here is a video of the setup (MOTU/SL24R) without the switch: ua-cam.com/video/xsmh62ILPdM/v-deo.html
