Wow this was a seriously deep conversation and I loved it. I think if we look at the larger society and cultural change in America we can understand why marriage is not the same as it was 20-30 years ago. Society socializes each of its citizens to fit into the larger acceptable culture and marriage in American cultural looks really different. It use to be male and female, now it’s same-sex marriage and arranged marriage and marrying for money and business. It’s not easy to marry in America and trust that it will last. The media socializes viewers on what marriage is and we can all see culturally marriage in America looks the same way it does in the media. As a psychology and sociology Graduate we find that marriage is in competition with education, success and happiness all of which you can find without marrying.
