I've been infusing focus sprints in my day for work and personal development. At work my productivity skyrocketed. i could finish my daily tasks in one sprint. the rest of the day is just for revisions for all of the tasks, if there are revisions. My manager also noticed increase in my creativity. For my after hours i focus on developing my illustration skills mainly portrait paintings. i've applied "sketchsprints" into my routine, even though i only have the evening for that. i've been forming good habits in drawing and I can see the development in my craft. Thank you very much for sharing this Matthew! I've been feeling a lot better the past two weeks and it feels like im burnout free. I think it's because i know that im spending my time in the things that i'd love to improve and it feels more rewarding than anything. With this im positively looking forward to the future. Cheers!
This validates me after many years of people telling me that my 1.5/2hrs then a short break was wrong! Getting to know the way my creativity is charged and spent allows me to do the work in 1hr that others need much longer. I take it further to warm up with a process that fulfills my need for information and allows me to engage completely.
@@MatthewEncina I've realized from observing my kids that creativity and imagination can be lost so easily. Thankfully I was stubborn and refused to let go! My mind wanders til it runs. Spot on with kids and creativity. When my two daughters are together try never are bored. What happened to us as adults? Thank you Matthew for the great tips 👍
Best talk about creativity and productivity, so easy to follow and to understand everything he says.Recently I participated in a workshop about Design Thinking and that was the moment when I realize that a very specified challenge its easier to solve and achieve than an unclear one. We use the "Yes, and" to continue the flow of ideas. A great solution to define ideas is to ask "Why?" until you find the core of the problem or challenge.

This conference was probably the inception of Matt’s decision to seek new challenges. Happy for you bro, I’m definitely also considering this new realm of how design thinking can help in the new world. Cheers
I loved the video and would like to add some resources to it: The techniques to fight the distraction and boredom are well known by people with ADHD. The focus sprint is a pairing of the 'pomodoro technique ' (YT: 'How to ADHD' - Time management) and the 'salami technique' (techniques to break big tasks into the smallest goals - "get up" and "wash face" are small goals for me that I have to break down, even further on bad days [as in, 'go to this room' 'take this' 'do this with it']. ). So if you would like to know more techniques you can apply to trick your brain into focusing, getting less distracted and get more things done: I HIGHLY recommend researching the methods us people with constant distraction and constant boredom are using. I know all you creative people out there can benefit from these.
Wow...no words. This video spoke to me in ways I can't explain and might just be the thing I need to change my life (because I really need to change my life now as a struggling 20 year old). By just watching this, I realized I get my best ideas when just listening to music. Not about how to make it (I'm an artist and new animator) but ideas on stories and concepts of various kinds of stories.
The brainstorming session really is similar with design sprints, in a good way. These have made a big impact on how I approach now projects/products. Can recommend!
Hey there!! This was something extremely important for me, my mind was subconciously thinking most of the things mentioned herein. I am super glad hearing each and every fact, thought, suggestion, & real-life experiences addressed by the speakers. I just can't thank you enough for such an amazing experience you shared. I genuinely wish I were there so as to experience everything live and happening by myself..!! #thefutur is my all time fav channel to learn, innovate, and motivate myself into carving myself in being the absolute best and yielding the best out of me! The best 17 mins spent! My productivity has been extremely low since a few months now and I have been suffering because of it financially! This video has motivated me to get back and work even harder. Absolutely love how there is no gate keeping here and the vibe is always so positive and motivating. Love The Futur!
As a Graphic Design student in his senior year, I feel uncertain-typically-about the future. I worry that I’m not learning enough, reading enough books , drawing enough, attending enough workshops and conferences, etc. I genuinely appreciate the content being produced by The Futur. I hope to take these principles being taught and shared in order to ready my mind for the now and the future. I still struggle with these overwhelming feelings of uncertainty.

After participating in and often leading brainstorming sessions, I found they do not work. Everyone has a vision in mind of how they should work but in my experience, I rarely saw it happen. So I had this idea that I'd like to share with y'all: Hold a pre-meeting a few days before the brainstorming session. Unload as much information on the participants as you can then send everyone away. Let everyone know that to be admitted to the brainstorming, you must have at least three (or pick any number) ideas. Collect all the ideas before the session starts and make them visible on an oversized pad, whiteboard, or whatever. When the team comes in, they see all the concepts, good and bad. Rather than starting cold, their brains are already warmed up and ready. I found this running start gets brainstorming revved up into top gear immediately and produces huge results.
Hey Matthew, love your content. Watched a few of your videos on your personal channel too (day in the life, DIY Home Office,...) and am just captured by your style. About this video: What’s your exact setup to shoot the close up of you talking to the camera? - Canon 80D - Sigma 50mm? - Mic? - How do you light yourself?
Man I was using every these methods unconsciously, Now I know what I'm doing thanks to you.. for me, the focus sprint is 60 minutes uninterrupted time slot.
This was very timely. I underestimate the amount of distractions I allow in and end up getting overwhelmed by them. The boredom concept you talked about explains a lot about where my inspiration usually comes from. Going to have to work to incorporate these tools.
I've found myself increasingly distracted with even the easiest of tasks lately. A few years ago I used to get lost in this tunnel of creative drive. I'm not sure what happened to it, but I'm going to give these methods a try. Also, Matthew got me audibly saying 'Damn' when I checked a notification right as he said 'you've probably been distracted once during this video'.
Mathew, one of your most inspiring videos! You brought me to point I really have to look over my all day routine and think twice what I am doing... I am so motivated right now...
"...I was busy, but at the end of the week..." "...tired all the time, working on the edge of burnout..." Those feels, all those feels. I'm going to give focus sprints a serious go this week.

Thank you so much Matthew! I've been struggling to get things done on time because I get distracted a lot so I will be applying these tools right away. I'll let you know if it worked!
One of your best videos so far, by far. Congratulations. Extremely helpful. It was one of the few times that I could actually see almost the whole video without being distracted with my phone, emails, or aynthing. Thank you. I will put that tools into use right friggin now.
Thank you for the insightful and thoughtful video. Focus sprints definitely are a way to be productive which I'll do at home. At work it's close to impossible since I'm seen as the go-to person for everything!
What to say about this video ??? ... The language is easily understandable (even for a non English-native), Subjects are well construct (and deconstructed), the haul document is pleasant to watch en nicely edited. Thank's for shearing your ideas and reflections !!! Keep going on that way !
I hvae been doing some of these things for a few months now, it has honestly been a game changer in my workflow. I usually put my phone in a different room and forget all about it
Not only the overall quality of the video, the emotion and so many creative decisions, but the topics and conceptual execution was top-notch. Got into the video expecting cliche productivity talk and tips, but no. There was more. Something different. An unique and well thought opinion. More videos like this please. PLEASE
@@MatthewEncina I'll totally try them. I was aware of AI and what would mean for us as a society, how work and shifts in behavior and cultures are going to be shaped because of it. A complicated topic, but I love to discuss about it. Didn't know about the 90-20min rule to improve focus and get more done. I'll definitely put that in practice now. And boredom yes. That's incredible true. The best moments of connection with reality and crazy but potentially useful ideas happened when I was walking through the city or just seated in a park watching time go by without any mobile devices on my pocket. Curious how boredom is almost non existent and how our past society would pray to have something to do or be entertained 24/7 whereas nowdays we are seeking "forced boredom" to be more happy and creative. Technology is a double edged sword.
Focus Sprint
- Goal
- Subtasks
- 90 min concentrated work
- rest 20 min
- break the day/ perform as many focus sprints as you can
Better Brainstorms
- Bad: the idea still unclear to the team
- Stablish a challenge to tackle
- 4 people small group
- use naive experts
- hot potato with the idea
- don't shoot anything down: YES AND... expand and grow rather than shrink the idea
- "t-sheet": explanation and sketch; better representation of an idea
Beautiful Boredom
- turn of stimuli
- take notes
- be present; be bored; create space to the mind; let it wander
"STEP AWAY FROM DISTRACTIONS AND BE INTENTIONAL WITH YOUR THOUGHTS"
thanks for the recap ..... cheerss
Saved me 17 minutes!

To summarise
THE FUTURE OF CREATIVITY
This is the greatest time to be alive as a creative but how do we take advantage of the tools at out disposal?
BIG CHALLENGES
Whats Holding us back?
CHALLENGE 1
The Robots are coming
The role of designers will change dramatically in the near future…
The types of skills we need to bring to the table will need to be very different
We must dream up a future that is BOLD, RIDICULOUS and UNEXPECTED
Bring a human touch to everything we do
As creative human beings our greatest strengths are that we can dream up things that don’t exist yet
We must break away from convention and push ourselves to stretch and flex our creative imagination
CHALLENGE 2
We should be innovating not iterating
How do we prepare for disruption?
We have to THINK BIG
We have to be comfortable with being uncomfortable
We have to become expansive thinkers and practice growing our imagination
CHALLENGE 3
Were distracted all the……time
We get distracted every 90 seconds
We only get 3.5 hours of productive time out of an 8 hour work day
Multitasking is a myth
TOOL 1
Focus Sprints
Our brain is our most powerful asset
90 Minute focus sprint of uninterrupted, distraction free, concentrated work to achieve sustainable peak performance
STEP 1
Turn off ALL distractions (hide you phone)
STEP 2
Assign a goal - Be realistic- break down the goal into sub tasks
STEP 3 Set a timer and go
STEP 4 Rest for 20 minutes, go for a walk
STEP 5 REPEAT for as many reps as you can
Start with 1 and build up from there
TOOL 2
Better Brainstorms for expansive thinking
STEP 1
Run a BRAINSTORM session
Set a well defined challenge to tackle
Be specific
STEP 2
Break up into 4 person groups
1 person records and facilitates, try to include a “NAIVE EXPERT” from another department
STEP 3 Play hot potato with the idea “YES AND…”
STEP 4 Document the idea in a T sheet
TOOL 3
Beautiful boredom
Allow the brain time and space to be creative
STEP 1
Get rid of digital distractions and just be
STEP 2
Write ideas down on paper and pen
I watch this again n again as A MOTIVATIONAL VIDEO
Thanks for sharing, Matthew! Will definitely try these out! A+ quality content 💯⭐
i cannot tell you how much design sprints have helped my since since i started doing it. and about the naive expert part ! we have 2 people in our office who join the sprints to question every idea in every aspects. this gives us a broader vision if the idea actually works or not. plus its funny and calms the heavy thinking process that chills the mood and sparks creativity even more ! Mathew, one of your most inspiring videos! You brought me to point I really have to look over my all day routine and think twice what I am doing... I am so motivated right now...
I really love how you distilled what you learned from the conference, and turned into into a really helpful piece of content. Thank you!
THANK YOU SO MUCH MATTHEW! 🙏
i strongly agree that some great ideas come from boredom and setting your self free from devices.
"...I was busy, but at the end of the week..." "...tired all the time, working on the edge of burnout..." Those feels, all those feels. I'm going to give focus sprints a serious go this week.
This is gold! Literally! This is the video which you wanna come back to when you are in need of inspiration! Awesome work!
Wow wow wow wow wow wow wow you did such an amazing job on this video!!! 😱😱👌👌👌🙏🙏🙏

17 minutes of unadulterated value! Kudos! I enjoyed this thoroughly!🔥
The storytelling is awesome and the background sound 🔥
I’ve seen every video of the futur like twice each, minimum, and this is the best by far. Thank you for giving back so much.
all I can say is AMEN! So well done and some of the most information I have gotten in 17 minutes and I needed that right now.
So much heart and practicality in your videos. Thank you guys!
I spoke at 99U on the power of Doodling for Communication. I also attended Duncan Wardle's session, which I'd participated in before and also documented as a graphic facilitator. I missed some of the other talks you mentioned soI'm looking forward to catching the videos, but thanks for the recap!!!
Wow, it was one of the most important video I have watched today. I am going to apply most of the points in my life from Focus sprints to boredom. Thank you for this video :) :)
THANK YOU for this video! It was beautiful, moving, inspiring and so true, helpful and empowering! I will continue to watch it over and over :-).
Thank you so much Matthew! I've been struggling to get things done on time because I get distracted a lot so I will be applying these tools right away. I'll let you know if it worked!
@@MatthewEncina Tomorrow i'm working on my final project for college...i'll send you a message to share you the results!!
One of your best videos so far, by far. Congratulations. Extremely helpful. It was one of the few times that I could actually see almost the whole video without being distracted with my phone, emails, or aynthing. Thank you. I will put that tools into use right friggin now.
Fantastic video Matthew. Thank you
Thank you for the insightful and thoughtful video. Focus sprints definitely are a way to be productive which I'll do at home. At work it's close to impossible since I'm seen as the go-to person for everything!
Super useful! Now it's time to step away from the computer and youtube and start dreaming again ;)
I usually put my phone in a different room and forget all about it
Bro From one Filipino to another, this video is not only Awesomely Informative but it is also Informatively Awesome.
Wow, the music choice in this one is marvelous
This is marvelous Mathew... Absolutely loved this video and I'll start implementing these from today itself. Thank you for sharing this !! 💜🌟
One of the best video by The Futur!
Thanks! I needed this, I'm was starting to lose my drive and passion in design until i saw this here. You literally saved me. Thank you
Lived it! 👌 Thanks for sharing!
The 90 minutes sprint s a good idea. Great video!
one of the best videos I've ever watched.
Best productivity video for creatives. Ever.
Thank u
@@MatthewEncina I will try. Working from home 90 mins uninterrupted seems a lot to me atm because I have small children.
I will try everuthing else :)
