Because he can play there. And if push comes to shove and a centre-back does get injured in the Euro's , he needs to step up and do a job there for his country. We're not blessed with centre-backs at the moment, but stones had a good game last night, it's the best I've seen him play for England. But, this is a problem area especially when Hodgson has decided to take only three centre-backs to the Euro's.
I think what he want meant was, with such a good knowledge of attacking position to score a header like that, he should be in an attacking midfielder role.

Seriously Australia... this game showed a serious gap in our CB and ST roles. Take away Spiranovic, Cahill and Sainsbury and we can't score and can't defend either seems like. When your best defender is a side full back from Liverpool you know there's something going wrong. Mooy and Rogic really showed up England's midfielders but unfortunately Kruse and Maclaren couldn't finish.

Also you should consider using Matt Derbyshire in Omonoia Fc. He has scored 24 goals out of 33 appearances. He would be deadly if England play a team lower down as he might be now one of the best English players abroad

It was 3-1 in 2003, Francis Jeffers scored for England on his one and only cap. I remember it well, as a Leeds fan I was torn about who to support. An Australia team with the likes of Kewell and Viduka, or an England team full of Scum United players!

It looks like the team was selected that way to be a straight shoot-out between the 3 midfield players to see who is selected. I wouldn't say either of them really gave their chances much of a boost, there was no real stand out performance from any of them. It would appear that Rooney and Sterling have shut a few people up though who were questioning their places in the squad!
