Drive Up Sutton Bank

Starting east of Thirsk, this drive follows the A170 up Sutton Bank before taking a minor road past Rievaulx Abbey, then follows the B1257 through Bilsdale, finishing at Clay Bank viewpoint.

I really want to visit the national park but I’m worried about that steep road. I have a 1L Peugeot and just worried I’ll stall!

It's well worth visiting, some of the best countryside and coastline in England and lots of history. The roads shouldn't be a problem, I drove the Lake District passes in a 1l VW without issue and they're a fair bit more challenging. Keep it in a low gear so you aren't losing momentum on the steep hills and you should be fine.

What is often forgotten is that the steep section starts before the hairpin. It does not even look like a 1 in 4 ascent, but it brings you down to walking pace pretty quickly. Where did you go after Sutton Bank?

Good point - it's a deceptively steep ascent. After Sutton Bank I went past Rievaulx Abbey, through Bilsdale and stopped at Clay Bank to see the Wainstones.
