There are always overpayments during UFA time. In order to get that player. Had to pay him and pay him long term. Was JT worth 11M? Not really. But it is the price to pay to get well known players. The only reason this happened is because the Leafs guaranteed Tavares an extension of 4 years X 4-5M/year.
There has been rumours Leafs jave contract extension for JT. 3-4 yrs between 5-6 mill a season.
