Definitely depends on term. If he does a 2 year bridge then a 4 or 5 year 35+ with them, he could make $6 for 2 then say $4 or $5 to end his career there Tanev got that, Tavares could as well.
Are we sure Marner is leaving though? I don’t see a Marner trade that makes the Leafs better. Problem is if JT gets a pay cut and we use the rest of the money on signing Marner we are stuck with the same team and we have plenty of proof they are not cup worthy
agreed..need them both to be away at end of next season to get a new look , rather than same old that has never worked.
6-8 mill on open market, and id like him between 3-5 mill on toronto. I think he would be very willing to give a discount, and take a lesser role just to stay
Simple as this. When you get a Star player in Free Agency you must overpay. You give up nothing but cap space for the guy. Doesn’t mean good management also has 4 or 5 additional bad contracts. The Leafs mistake was not bridging Marner and Nylander NOT the Tavares contract. Tavares was a very good player and still is. The entire deal would have revolved around giving Tavares the 11M then getting paid back now after this contract ends. He will be very productive now for another 3 to 5 years at a very good contract. Tavares was NEVER the problem……..Dubas was!
I like JT and would resign him at 4.25 for 4 years. But oh boy, he seemed to lose a step last year. He’s slowing down. A team that signs him for 4x6 or 7 is spending too much for a diminishing asset.
40 goals this season watch
JT is a Leaf for life.
They will sign him before the 4.5 range open market 6.75
Open market he would easily get 3 years at 6M or 4 years at 5 to 6M. He will make 10 M less over that time frame and stay with the Leafs. He is making more on his investments at this point in his career and taxed far less on those than he can make in salary. Remember……..Income is taxed at twice the rate of Capital.
Point a game player
Johnny ain't going anywhere marners is already packed
atleast your tavares picture is up to date with the A on his jersey now
Tavares isnt going anywhere. Leafs will be paid back bigtime for the balance for his career with very team friendly contracts. Probably 3 X 3 to 3.5 then league minimum like Spezza for another 2 or 3 years to end his career.
I would rather use the money to sign a couple of scrapy hard-nosed centers that score 20 to 25 goals
Sorry Andrew..i seldom disagree with you, JT has made millions from his time at the Leafs..I like him, but after next season his slowing legs will definitely make him 3rd/4th line..you do not give bottom 6 $6-7m. Gio and Jumbo also wanted to be Leafs and they took BIG HTD`s to be Leafs..IF JT needs big money at this stage of his career ? that would surprise me greatly. Some fans are complaining that Kampf is overpaid as a bottom 6 centre so 6-7M ? no way, also JT wont be playing with top 6 forwards after this contract...i want him to stay, i like him..but not at the expense of making 6-7m...could get 2-3 very good bottom 6 players for that money that will do what JT will from 2025/26..
it was reported a month ago he will sighn for 4x4 nice content tho
Its not accurate.
Making Matthews the captain is a nothing burger! A lot of hype that won't make the Leafs any better. This is a problem with Leaf fans, they get excited about the most insignificant things. Of 4 players making $11 million or more, 3 never earned a trophy, that speaks volume.
shuddup
@@husg13 others liked my comment because its true and the truth hurts doesn't it?
You don’t spend what the cap might be. Ever. It was a stupid move at the time and worse has it went along. Dubas was always garbage
They spent with thinking there wouldnt be a global pandemic.
@@AndrewPilukHockey I know but you wait until it’s finalized before you spend the cap that might be. It was a rookie GM mistake
@@mattsmith6857 Wait until whats finalized?
@@AndrewPilukHockey the amount the cap is going up. Wait till it’s official before you make decisions.
Leafs suck
