The reveal about Madoka's "chosen one" nature is one of my favorite twists in any piece of media. The idea that she is "chosen" because *Homura* chose her, because Homura loved her so much that she kept re-writing time around her over and over until she was the literal center of the universe because that's what she was to Homura... * chef's kiss *. So good.

that's so tragic from homura's end. literally the last thing she wanted happened and it was directly because of her own actions. she loved madoka so much that she caused her to cease to exist. i can't blame her for what she did in rebellion at all, the guilt (and the self-hatred that comes w that) of knowing that i was the one who robbed my loved one of their entire existence when i was just trying to keep them safe and happy would tear me up inside, too.

The idea of becoming what someone who loves you sees is amazing to me. There’s a manga I can’t say the name of so I won’t spoil it but one of the characters loses her memory and can only see herself through the lense of what the boy who was in love with her previous self saw her as. He filmed what he believed were her final moments and filmed how he viewed her, and she becomes that person. She is the view of someone who loved her and I find that incredible- kind of like how madoka became a literal constant of the universe, just like how homura believed her to be

"Careful what you wished for" can be applied to things that people deal with naturally anyway so throwing some actual wish granting magic into the mix is just a bit of flavor. I think Madokas wish was mainly for the girls to _not_ become witches. She couldn't save their lifes, because the wishes they made were important to them, so she didn't want to take that away. So all she could give them was a peaceful death without succumbing to dispair.

The interactions with Madoka's mom shows why adults are not suited to be magical girls. They have settled into their existence. They accept reality as it is, with no desire or even need to change it. When bad things happen, they accept it, feel the pain, and move on.

Something to note is that Kyubey, while not being able to state falsehoods, can lie through omission or misdirection. Everything he says has a purpose. Normally, Kyubey withholds info such as how Soul Gems work or creation of Witchs and excuses it with "You never asked". But with Homura and Madoka, he freely gives speaks and speculates because he's trying to drive them to certain conclusions.
Kyubey tells Homura that turning back time is what made Madoka so powerful, because he's trying to convince Homura that turning back time will only make Madoka's fate more horrific. Kyubey tells Madoka of humanity's and the Incubator's history to dismiss any notions of Madoka wishing away the Incubators or the like. Notice how Kyubey words things too "Humanity would likely still be living naked in caves." is extraordinarily speculative, and is meant to drive Madoka into thinking his species is essential to human development.
There's something similar earlier on where Kyubey eggs Kyoko on into believing she can turn Sayaka from a Witch back into a human by saying "It wouldn't surprise me.". But when Homura later asks if it was possible, he outright denies the possibility ever existing. Kyubey's race doesn't have emotions, he couldn't have been surprised if it did happen, but he also knows it couldn't have happened. He purposely misdirected Kyoko into a impossible suicide mission in order to isolate Homura of potential allies. And he's likely doing the same to Homura and Madoka, but they can't prove or assume he's wrong because the consequences would be dire if Kyubey was actually right in his speculation.

I genuinely adore how the conclusion of this series is imperfect, both because the "perfect" solution doesn't exist AND because this answer comes from a flawed 12 year old girl. I also love that she thanks Homura for delaying her wish, allowing her to understand the system behind it and actually *make use* of the wish, something she was so caught up about earlier on.
I'm also a fan of Madoka using her wish to negate the suffering of girls before they turn to witches specifically because it plays into the existing system. If she wished to erase magical girls from existence, for example, who's to say the system wouldn't re-make itself with a different word/title? If she deleted the incubators, who's to say a different species wouldn't fill their role, thus changing nothing? Yeah, the system still sucks, but Madoka made it worth something, and that's pretty damn incredible.

'If Madoka eliminated witches, how are there still grief seeds? And Kyūbē?' Well, the show says it a second later. There are no grief seeds anymore, but the evil feelings of humans still crystalize in other formats -- the little cubes that magical girls get from wraiths.
It has been said that one of the effects of Madoka's wish was to transform an utterly unfair universe into one in which magical girls of the Sailor Moon kind become possible. Now that the physics works differently -- no more grief seeds with huge bursts of energy --, Kyūbē and his people changed their behavior, because, being logical creatures, they see that now actually helping magical girls is the most profitable attitude to get energy cubes. Now, the longer a girl survives, the longer they keep getting cubes, so it makes sense for them to behave like old-style Magical Girl mascots now. As Homura said, it's the kind of creatures they are.

It's more like, Madoka erased herself from existence. She didn't die, she simply never existed. She rewrote the world so she never existed in the first place.

    • @patrickobrien6251
      @patrickobrien6251 3 місяці тому +19

yeah exactly, MADOKA never existed. The wish seems to grant the power necessary to complete itself. But for her to reach every magical girl ever since the beginning of time until the end of time she needs to be a being that transcends time itself, A God or Governing law of the universe. That means she can't exist physically. But as a God, "The Law of Cycles" exists in every time, everywhere, always. Madoka has become a being, like Kyube said, with no beginning and no end. Which means that in this universe that Madoka rebuilds, she exists since its conception and even before the birth of the Human Race or even before the birth of the Incubators. And when a Magical Girl dies, they join her as agents of this Law. They basically join Madoka as part of the Law of Cycles and cease to exist as physical beings. How could her parents remember birthing a being that predates them? But Homura's wish was specifically "I want to redo my meeting with Miss Kaname. But this time, instead of her protecting me, I want to become strong enough to protect her" so in a world where Madoka, doesn't exist, only someone whose wish was centered on meeting her again and being strong enough to save her could possibly be able to remember her. But this also begs the question, what was Homura's wish in this new timeline where Madoka never existed and why did that result in her having a bow instead of a shield? My theory is that under madoka's influence as a God, Homura can't turn back time because she can't go back to save Madoka, a human who never existed.
      ***SPOILERS FOR REBELLION***
but once the incubators place Homura in the isolation field, cutting her off from the law of cycles, she once again gained the power to manipulate time BECAUSE she is cut off from Madoka's influence. because Madoka existed once again as Madoka and not as The Law of Cycles inside of the isolation field, Homura had the ability to use her original wish to save Madoka and thus regained her original weapons and power to manipulate time. That's also why, placing her in the isolation field with a God, temporarily turned human again, they gave Homura a HUGE amount of Karmic Destiny. She now, as a magical girl in that isolation field, had the wish and the opportunity to prevent a God from being a God. This was the only way in which she could fulfill her wish and that wish was directly tied to the Karmic destiny of a GOD. Not to mention, Homuras wish was SPECIFICALLY NOT TO BE SO WEAK THAT MADOKA HAS TO PROTECT HER!!! "But this time, instead of her protecting me, I want to become strong enough to protect her!" Her destiny is to be strong enough to protect a GOD, and the incubators made it possible because they let Madoka and the law of cycles enter the isolation field as Madoka. Only in Homura's weird messed up way.

See, the thing about Kaname Madoka is that, while she may seem fairly well put together on the surface, she actually has crippling self-worth issues, and can only really feel good about herself when she's helping others. That's why she's the nurse's aid for her class, for instance. But she's still almost certainly clinically depressed, a condition not helped by either Japan's perspective on mental illness nor the trauma of... the entire series.
And so, from that perspective, we realize that Madoka was fully aware that she may cease to properly exist upon apotheosis, a fact helped by how wishes in this universe _tend_ to legitimately be what you're asking for, with the "Karmic Backlash" being more of an externality. So, Madoka becoming the Law of Cycles, or more properly, fusing with the Rumor of the Law of Cycles (long story don't ask), was, in a sense, the perfect suicide. She could help countless people immensely, and once she was gone, nobody would remember her, so nobody would be hurt as _nobody would miss her._
When Homura said that she was from another timeline, Madoka _got_ that she'd been going back in time to save people, but _didn't_ get that Homura was trying to save _her,_ specifically, due to the aforementioned self-worth issues. But as a result of making her wish, she was able to _properly_ see, for the first time, just how much Homura cared about her. But she already had made her wish, of course, so even if she wanted to talk more, even if she wanted to stay longer, she _couldn't._ That's actually the context behind the song "Mata Ashita," which was, notably, sung by Madoka's VA and used as the first ED in the blu-ray version (in the tv release, prior to episode 3, there were no EDs).

She symbolizes the fool who continuously spins in circles. The witch's mysteries have been handed down through the course of history; her appellation is "Walpurgisnacht." She will continue to rotate aimlessly throughout the world until she completely changes the whole of this age into a drama. When the doll's usual upside-down position reaches the top part of the witch, she completely roils the civilization on the ground in a flash through her gale-like flight.
Unnamed familiar that looks like magical girls are the stage-constructing witch's minions. Their duty is to be clowns. Countless souls drawn to her vast magical power. Nobody knows whether Walpurgisnacht was initially a single person, or if it was a phantom born from the gathering of many spirits.

(Bluenose) Witch minions that appear alongside catastrophes brought about by the giant witch known as “Walpurgisnacht”. They pull the ropes connected to Walpurgisnacht’s neck as she floats in the sky, forming a circus troupe and conducting a parade. All the members of the troupe are thought to be Walpurgisnacht’s minions, but many facts of the matter are still unclear. Some documents refer to the ones riding four-legged beasts as “Bluenose,” and the red-and-black creatures with long ears as “Rednose”. Unlike the aggressive, shadow-like minions that appear at the same time, these minions will not attack unless you obstruct their parade. It's originally a pagan holiday welcoming the turn of the seasons, celebrated with bonfires and parties and, ah, fertility related activities. When the church claimed the date for Saint Walpurgis, they declared that everybody getting together to party were witches, so Walpurgisnacht was a night when all the witches gathered together.

16:40 the Movie "Rebellion" continues the main series. and another Movie "Rising" is supposed to release this year
there is also the Magia Record anime.. however it's apparently it's own universe..
when tasked to make a Mobile/Gacha Game using the Magica IP they wrote a story for it. that apparently was popular enough to warrant 3 seasons. it's apperently finished. but if the Mobile game continues i could see the anime continuing
it basically got the Fate/Grand Order treatment

Edit: also Danny you have to watch the sequel movie. You HAVE to watch rebellion, its so good, trust me.

I think the best part of madoka magica is that it touches on a darker aspect of the magical girl genre and has a beautiful art style and way of storytelling and made a overall amazing bittersweet ending that truly shows that sometimes hope can still persevere even when it seems hopeless to have any to begin with.

    • @lizardlord4k

What makes it even better is that it doesn't "betray" what the magical girl genre is. It might be darker and a bit tragic than some other magical girl series, but it still holds on to those same core beliefs. That love and hope can and will save the world, it might hurt, and you might bleed, but it's still worth believing in.

i think the way they use the intro an outro between these last 2 episodes is genius. it makes it seem like its Homura singing about saving Madoka, while the ending seems like its Madoka telling Homura that she was destined to become a magical girl no matter what Homura or anyone else did to stop her. thats why you see Madoka running to that light while passing all her friends along the way and even Homura at the end trying to stop her.

Madoka is nothing less than a masterpiece, and one of my personal favorite anime of all time. And while it deserves to be remembered for its darkness, it also has a sense of hope and optimism for it like all good magical girl shows should have. Despite everything Madoka never stopped wanting the best for her friends and the other girls, that despite everything Homura never gave in to despiar and would repeat a hundred thousand times to keep Madoka safe. That Madoka ulimately decided the only way to truly save them was the change the system that lead them to their fates and she would make sure nobody else ever had to hurt like that again and restore what a magical girl is supposed to be
I adore this series, and not a single anime that's tried to copy has come close to matching, including its own spin-off/sequel Magia Record. Rebellion is close but we're still waiting for the next part.
    A true classic.

Honestly, I love the writing of this story along with the soundtrack. In fact, the Soundtrack is what I became most obsessed with right away. It slaps so hard. And the fact that things in this story have logic (even if twisted) behind it such as why Madoka is somehow the 'chosen one' or the purpose of the soul gems or why the Incubator race does what it does. I also really loved the Witches and their dungeons. Its sort of like the concept of labyrinths/dungeons/palaces in Persona. The witch's labyrinths are all based on the witch/magical girl that houses them. Shoot, when you realize that Charlotte, the witch of the cake/candy/hospital/medicine themed labyrinth made a wish for cake in exchange for her magic powers...and then you have Mami telling Madoka to wish for a cake...is so inherently messed up. The lore really is something when you start analyzing the witches.
As for the ending, I feel like its not a good ending. Its a hopeful ending. And in a series all about Despair vs Hope...It's kinda perfect. Madoka's wish created a universe where Magical Girls will still die for their wish, yes...but they won't suffer and become witches that cause more despair. They now have a sort of afterlife/valhalla style place to go to in the end.
Anyway, You should definitely check out the movies. Specially Rebellion.

On the FMA: Brotherhood finale I commented how Danny was just now watching some series that many folks would consider classics/staples. In the previous Madoka Magica video Danny talked about how he feels he's only been watching good shows on the channel recently. These two things are, of course, related! Danny *also* said recently that while he's been enjoying the quick 12-ish episode anime he's been watching lately, he does like having some longer series that will provide content for months. With all this in mind... I have a recommendation 👀 Steins;Gate
Steins;Gate is from the same era as the recent bangers Danny's been enjoying. It's sci-fi that still feels mostly grounded, with more of a focus on the characters and emotional stakes rather than zany anime bullshit. It has an incredibly tense and gripping narrative. The English VA is great, which I bring up since Danny seems to always opt for dub over sub for reactions. There are just shy of 50 episodes (and a movie) so it can provide greater content longevity without being something like a triple-digit episode count commitment. I have no way of knowing if it'll fit with the channel's viewer demographic, but I've seen reactions for the show perform well on other channels so it could also do so here. Overall I just think that Danny would really enjoy the series and could potentially have some great reactions as the series progresses 😄 No spoilers though 😉

3:15 Oh, I forgot to explain Madoka's mom's advice, THAT's what I was wanting to comment on a prior video lol
Um, so basically, she's saying it's easier to get back up from mistakes and setbacks as a kid than as an adult, because WAY more people rely on you and you can absolutely ruin your life and others' if you fuck up even a little. Fuck ups as a kid have a LOT less stakes tied to them, and learning as a kid because of fuck ups is BETTER because then you know by the time you reach adulthood what NOT to do.
And trust me, that's a lesson I learned the hard way instead - fucked up as an adult, effectively reset the trajectory of my life and can't get over it.
Kids recover way faster than adults do and they USUALLY have a good support system, whereas adults are kind of up the creek without a paddle because they have responsibilities and control of their life now. No good support system is going to reset the setbacks from losing your job or getting divorced or having an unwanted child, etc. The stakes are maximized.

    • @pastelmusic409
      @pastelmusic409 3 місяці тому +1

Speaking as a former kid with no support system and a lot of messed up crap, this is a load of nonsense. The age isn't what makes mistakes ok, it's the severity of what you do. Watch a kid make a mistake that costs them their quality of life or their life entirely and see how ridiculous it is to say that childhood fuckups have a lot less stakes. A kid is one crossing a street without looking away from dying or being messed up for life.

    • @DamiesEvilTwin
      @DamiesEvilTwin 3 місяці тому +2

@@pastelmusic409 I mean that's cool and all bro but I did say most kids have support systems, not every kid. I am in fact one of those too.
Adults can cross the street without looking so like that example doesn't quite fit as a kid-exclusive fuckup.
I don't know how to tell you this but kids don't cause fuckups that lead to major life changes as a regular thing. Adults, however? Even seemingly little things like getting into a fight with a friend can be a major source of issues in your life, and for those who rely on you.
Regardless I am just explaining what Madoka's mom was trying to say. That mistakes are easier and better to learn from as a child so you can deal with them better as an adult. It wasn't just drunken bullshit spitting, she actually had a point she was trying to convey. To be honest, I blame the writers because it wasn't clear to me for a good while either. I think I actually had to hear the same advice from another form of media to get it lol

@pastelmusic409 i mean kids can make mistakes with terrible consequences but usually these choices aren't easily acessible for them
Like a kid spending all their money on impulse would just be empty pocketed for a while, and idealy the parent would still provide their basic needs
Now an adult spending all their money, credit card, getting a big loan just on impulse, that has catastrophic consequences, they will pass hunger, can lose their house, get indebted for the rest of their life, and that without considering if they have kids to take care of
Kids mistakes usually are more silly ones and don't have heavy consequences, the opition to make fuck ups like adults is not something most kids have, kids can't have credit cards, drink alchool(idealy) or just take a car or plane to go whatever, and usually their not responsible for sustaning neither themselfs or anyone else
Also because these mistakes are usually low stake it's easier to forgive/forget/move on, wich is why it's easier to learn like this instead of as an adult where it can have permanent consequences or you can be heavilly blamed/reponsabilized
Not saying kids can't make choices that ruin their lifes, but normally this isn't the case

And where instead of the chickens' unfertilized eggs being left rotten somewhere in the woods, they're taken away so the farmer can both feed him and his and sell the excess for extra profits.

This is what if Witch form of Homura if she runs out of magic or falls into despair like Sayaka. We only have the name of the witch so I created a possible description based on the side material of the series. This is based on the doppel description in the side story Magia Record with just a few words change.
Glasses version of Homura witch form:
Homulilly the Mortal World Witch. Her nature is closed circuit. The witch loops through time in an endless cycle of trial-and-error. The witch's skin becomes glass, and her expression freezes into that of a doll. She launches volley after volley of attacks that only end when her target falls silent. In this way she is more like a Witch than other Witches. Not only can she can manipulate the sands of time, but she can pluck information of low importance from the alien lifeforms on her hat and create anything around the level of an earthly weapon by solidifying the sand.
Homura after she ditches her braid and glasses:
Homulilly the Mortal World Witch. Her nature is Karma. The witch visits many worlds in search of an exit, spinning giant threads of fate. Fourteen incomplete bodies born from emotion trail behind the witch's body, which has almost completely transformed into glass. In order to achieve their mission, these 14 bodies work methodically and tirelessly to remove obstacles. Regardless of their will, they weave the threads of fate, which become tangled in ever more complex patterns, driving her yet further into a maze, the exit of which can hardly be found. These bodies of emotion have no names.
