Lived in Sitka for fourty years, starting back in the late 70's, things were way different back then, no live TV, 2 week video delay. Not very much in the way of fresh foods, mostly canned. It was still sort of a wild west town, a bit more civilized now, I commercial fished for a few years, played in the mountains, camped, fished lived off the land to some extent. Camped out on island the first few years I was there (my home). It was really hard at times with the incumbent weather, but being outdoors, snowboarding in the winter was the cure. And an occasional trip out. Some of the bays further out of town that you have to boat and hike to, are off the scale. I retired from the Seafood Industry, and being expensive in Sitka, and always wanting to grow my own food moved to Costa Rica, another rainforest, but usually rains at night. Hope you get to go back and have more adventures, and thanks for the videos, I couldn't have done anything better with my life than live there, and its always fun to see home again.

Mike Sinder / I'm in North Florida, thinking of moving to Central America or Ecuador. My ex-son-in-law is an indigenous Mayan from Costa Rica. His hair is very nappy so he keeps it cut to the bone! His two girls turned out beautifully, one with nappy hair and the other with straight Scottish hair. By the way, I don't know when your birthday is but mine is 06/21. I always wish everyone a "Happy Birthday." 🎂

I lived in Sitka for 27 years. My kids were born and raised there, and I am so grateful for that. You have done a beautiful job showing this remarkable place. I think I recognized every trail; it made me homesick. I miss it every day, not just for the wildness and challenges but also for the people. It is the community that makes this way of life so fulfilling. You have to live a more accountable lifestyle when you live on an island with 15 miles of road and where you will see your neighbors at the grocery store or the baseball field or on a trail. Having fewer choices made life easier, simpler, and more clearly focused on the things that matter most in life - connection to people and the environment. I feel so fortunate to have discovered Sitka and to have made it my home that will live forever in my heart.

I worked in Sitka for a Summer. It is the most beautiful place in Alaska; hands down. Everyday I would walk across town to totem park. I'd walk down to the beach where there was an incredibly HUGE log that I would literally have to climb to get to the top where I would write. As I would write, on one side there was a picturesque sight of the town of Sitka itself. On the other side, was this pristine view of untouched nature. In between these two completely different scenes would be a HUGE cruise ship taking people to and from the town. That is my favorite place in my whole world.

I'm from Ireland and interned Juneau for 4 months in 2019 and spent 5 months this year at a remote salmon hatchery on an island in Prince William Sound (two very different experiences!). There's TOO MUCH to explore in Alaska even in a full lifetime. I would recommend to anyone with an interest in going to work one of the many seasonal jobs/internships across the state in either fisheries, tourism or other areas. Working for a time gives you a unique opportunity to really make the most of your time there, and fellow 'seasonals' and I would laugh at the cruise ship tourists as there was no way you could truly experience Alaska with just cash and a week without the local knowledge gained by spending time there, making friends, and gaining local knowledge.
Long story short, if you truly want to experience the fishing, hiking, climbing, camping, wildlife, wilderness and culture and either have the time, are looking for something temporary to do or just can't afford the Alaska trip of your dreams, take advantage of the bountiful seasonal positions/internships (e.g. Student Conservation Association) and have an experience money can't buy. Feel free to reply with any questions!

Twelve years in Alaska. No plans to leave. Been around the state to places that many who live here their whole life don’t get to go. Haven’t made it to Sitka yet, but I will someday. I’ve hunted moose, been charged by a bear, hiked in places where you can’t see any signs of man, and been so cold that my nose hairs froze when I breathed in.And I’ve only scratched the surface. Amazing place. I feel blessed to be here.

I live in Sitka and gotta say I’m 17 I’ve lived here my whole life, I’m now a senior at Sitka high. it’s really something, sad to say living here makes you want to move a lot of the time because like he said it’s expensive but the scenery makes it worth it and the people you meet and spend time with. I can say I’m friends with my whole grade and we have all grown up together so everyone has a strong bond with each other, we will probably come back when we have kids or visit with them because of all the stuff you can do and how easy it is to come up with ideas because the forest is literally our backyard so yeah it’s a cool place and I wouldn’t trade it out for any other. The things I’ve learned won’t be forgotten and the people I’ve met either, the best would be to walk around in the rain and listen to music or go on a hike with friends and love the jokes and pranks with each other and to just enjoy what’s around us

Just touching the tip of the iceberg (not meant to be punny), starting in Juneau I was able to visit Skagway, Haines, Glacier Bay, Petersburg, Ketchikan, Wrangell, and Tracy Arm. This is no doubt one of the most magestic places I have been. I have the goal of camping, hiking, and road-warrior traveling through the country.
Your soundtracks and cinematography are always incredible. I have been able to find so many artists I never would have known about if I hadn't heard them here. Thank you Jake

I came to Sitka 7 years ago for a job with the intention of staying for 1 year. Seven years later I am still here and so are 4 out of 6 of my adult children. It is an expensive place to live but the beauty is unmatched and Sitkans are the most generous and caring people. The bear in Totem Park have been especially unique this summer, I am assuming because there are no cruise ships; therefore, no tourists visiting the park during the days. In normal years bears are infrequently seen in the park but you don't really see them fishing, etc.. This year it seems that they have reclaimed their river for fishing. It makes it a bit more dangerous to use the park but it is also very refreshing and beautiful to see them there doing what comes naturally.

I'm a born and raised Alaskan, Juneau and Anchorage were my homes for 21 years. I didn't grow up doing a lot of outdoorsy things, but every time my friends dragged me out hiking, by the time we got to the top I was in awe. I've recently lived in Wisconsin and Montana and although they're beautiful in their own ways, that John Muir quote from your Sitka visual journal is so right. That nothing compares to the insane, unreal beauty of Alaska. If you're curious, definitely try living there! You'd be able to explore a lot in the van and have some amazing filming opportunities, especially with the extended daylight of summer time. Just beware of the darkness of winter, both literally and mentally. It takes a toll which is part of why I had to move away. Where ever you end up, thank you for sharing your journey in such a beautifully captivating way. Your videos really are inspiring. :)

"Out here it is on another level"...ha-ha, yes, this is the way it is. You have to really respect the weather in Alaska and its terrains. Weather can change at anytime and you have to be smart and safe. Yes, I lived in Ketchikan, Alaska for about 14 years, and my daughters graduated from High School there. So many tales to tell. I use to come to Sitka for the "Mudball" Softball tournaments they had each year. I would take a walk through the forests in-between games and just loved Sitka. My girls played basketball, so when the kids competed with each other the kids would fly to the different cities throughout Alaska, and Sitka was one of them too, that was a really neat experience. Girls/boys would stay at peoples homes overnights, (no staying at hotels) so the whole Southeast was like family, no matter where you lived in Alaska, there was always such a strong bond back then. Probably still is. Sadly, my children's father was a logger and was killed in a logging accident on Anette Island in 1991. He loved Alaska and to log and fish and hike, and boat. The spirit of Alaska never leaves you once you live there and it forever draws you back.

I come back to this video every once in a while n it overwhelms me every time. Like I’m struggling to breathe rn. It gives me a weird vibe because this is like my dream place yet it’s so far from how I live atm, I live in a little town/city called Liverpool.
It gives me this weird feeling of mourning for a life I’ve never had, I think about how if I moved there I’d be leaving my current life behind. And if I don’t I’ll never get to meet the people there. I could’ve even met my future wife there but we never met because I didn’t ygm.
I feel this a lot, I feel so lost.
Recently got in contact with my ex girlfriend (my only ever true love) n the conversation just ended after two days of speaking (convo was good like we were both being really open n having a laugh but yh it’s been a year since we broke up and last spoke) and I’ve realised she’s gone. Like it really is in the past even if we continue to talk n fix things. It’s gone. It’s in the past and I can never relive those moments.
Idk why I get like this so often.
    I think I’m broken.
(Ps. Amazing video man as u can tell lol been watching for about 6 months I deeply connect with it

I love Alaska with all my heart. I live in Anchorage for 5 years as a small child leaving AK at the age of 10. My sister stayed in Anchorage. In 1990 my dad and I went back to go salmon fishing. I fell in love with Alaska all over again. Been coming up every year since then. I decided to go with a motorhome instead of a cabin that way I can change my view whenever I want to. I'll be spending most of my time in the Kenai peninsula.

This video made my heart sing and my eyes watery. One and a half years ago I went to Alaska. To climb Denali through a Ridge that doesn't get climbed often. I ended up with frost bite on my face, hands and feet. Never would I go back. I miss it... it scuttled its way into my heart and soul. There is something truly magical, bewitching and grounding about this place on our planet.
Thank you so so much for this outstanding video! (You have found yourself a new follower)

I lived in Sitka for about a year. I loved everything there. The rain, occasional bears, whales, seafood, and forest. Sure it would rain hard at times but, almost every week there was a chance to go out and enjoy a hike. Most of the time rain is more like very fine drizzle.

I grew up here for most of my life from 7-20. I appreciated how you touched on the positives but also the negatives of living here. It truly is a special, beautiful place, but it’s also harsh, isolated and growing up there, often lonely where it feels like another world altogether. You captured some great footage to the point that even though I was glad to leave, it makes me homesick. Great video.

In 1988 as a Dutch Australian I bought a 1969 VW campervan and drove to the top of Alaska (then drove it to the bottom of South America which is another story). Along the way I found that amazing book, "The Great Alone". I remember spending three days outside Homer where people in RV's were fishing for salmon, reading this book and being totally mesmerised by the content. Sitka is mentioned as the Russian capital of Russian Alaska and was established principally for the otter pelts. When I got to Sitka in my van I met a local woman and her thirteen year old daughter and suggested to go on a hike in the mountains above Sitka which we did. But at the top the girl became tired and was developing hypothermia. I had to abandon them and get down the mountain as quickly as possible to alert rescue team to fly a helicopter up to locate them and rescue them. They were extremely lucky that a helicopter was in the vicinity at the time and they were rescued. The mother who was living in Sitka should have known better I guess. And yes I guess I was lucky also not to have encountered any bears at the time during not only that hike but other solo hikes which I did in Alaska. It did not cross my mind at the time because we don't have such animals in the wilderness in Australia. I just found your channel and subscribed and as a world traveller approaching 70 I will continue to watch your next adventures.

I was born in Sitka just before WWII ended -- Mach 1945. The place seems more like a city to me now. Too many people. It was a really great, wild place to grow up in. You get used to avoiding bears on the way to school, but love to look out the window and see deer, otter, and lots of eagles. The best thing is the isolation. It keeps out the riff-raff. Yes, it rains a lot -- duh -- it's a rain forest! If someone does ask if it rains a lot, I just say, "Is it green?" Case closed. One of the very best things here is the smell of the clean, mountain/ocean air. Pure heaven. I cannot imagine living anywhere else.

I lived up in Sitka for 9 years as a kid 234 Lakeview Dr then out on Sawmill Creek Rd were Thimbleberry creek crosses the Sawmill Creek Rd. We use to get our water from the waterfall of Thimbleberry Lake. A funnel with a screen and black pcv pipe laying on the ground to a wooden plastics lines tank. sometimes during the winter the pipe would freeze and we would have to separate the pipe to blow torch the plastic to get the ice to flow out and then put the pipe back together with the water flowing still. Dresses in rain gear... One of the best memories was chasing the Coho up that stream. Also using our Crist Craft Cabin Curser to go fishing and King Crabbing nothing better than fishing all day and coming back to a bay with King crab and salmon to cook on the beach and boats would show up for a impromptu beach cook out.

Nice work, Jake. You must come back and experience more of this place. I have lived in Sitka since 1979. My favorite experience, one oft repeated, is to stand on a spot where, most likely, no one has stood before. Uncrowded wild spaces to explore are plentiful as are deer, salmon, sea mammals and bears.....Fresh air and clean water abound and make this place beyond compare, as well as the community value of family, art, culture, music and health. I never tire of our landscape which I descibe as "always a new view" .....lazer beam patches light with clouds blended with mountains, island and sea.

Yes, you need to come to Alaska in your van. If you have only been to south east Alaska, you have just barely touched the tip of the iceberg as far as what Alaska has to offer. We lived in Seward for 8 years and I love coastal Alaska But the sunny summers in the interior or on the peninsula or up in the Matsu beat the rain any day of the week. We have a 2016 Sprinter and we find it to be the perfect platform for exploring this amazing state. Actually, any smaller type of semi self contained vehicle, truck camper or van, is a great choice over a big old RV. One of the most amazing things about Alaska that most people don't seem to notice is the light. We have endless sunrises and sunsets. After 38 years in this state, I am still blown away by the light. Throw in the breath taking views and vista's, the raw landscapes, textures and the color's and it is a photographers fantasy world. You could easily spend an entire summer exploring this state using your van as a base camp.

I don't ever feel "stuck here." I feel sheltered, at peace, protected. Although I was born here, I chose to buy a home and stay here. Not cheap. I love the fog. I love the rain -- it is raining right now, and I find it comforting; soothing. I love the smell of the ocean. I love the sound of the wind in the trees. And when the sun shines, I feel like I have died and gone to heaven. The fog and rain keep most people from wanting to live here. So do the long, wet winters. That's a good thing. We are nestled on a strip of land between mountains and the ocean, so if the weather was nicer, we would soon be overcrowded. It's okay to come and see us; just don't stay. We might love you, but we don't want you to stay. Have fun, then go home and leave us to our peace. We have long since made peace with the bears who were, after all, here first.

We live in Anchorage and absolutely LOVE it here. My family moved here when I was 3 years old. For the first 7 years we lived in the small town of Trapper Creek. My family owned and ran a lodge, we had 16 dogs that were our dog team that we could hook up to the sled in the winter, and it was a truly amazing place to grow up. The land was as big as my imagination, which helped me dream big as a young boy. We've had a lot of offers and chances to move out of Alaska, but there is something about the land and the people here that keep us. It really is a special place. I've been interested in Alaska a long time. I saw a documentary over 20 years ago, where this couple had a terraced garden/ small farm, and the cabbages were bigger than turkeys, learned about the 24 hours days. I got into reading about the topic of sustainable living, farming, and off grid life, Into the Wild, watched shows like Mountain Men, Last Alaskans, Life Below Zero, A Girl in the Woods and Our Alaskan Homestead on youtube. There are a bunch of books about interesting people, that escape to Alaska. I met a lady from Kodiak Island once, which tuned me into what its really like there. I was always into nature documentaries, love natural beauty, fresh air, and woodstoves. I like peace and quiet. Makes me think I would like it there, also being a bit of an introvert. I can't say it would not scare me the bears, but I guess you just get over it with time. I also watch hiking skiing and climbing documentaries frequently, many of which were in Alaska. I saw this and watched, never having watched any other of your videos, because it was about Alaska.
