Cant wait to see how fngr is gonna use those 5 last seconds of the video to make another 25 minute, poorly edited and boring video about how much lily sucks and hes a fucking angel
It is amazing how much of a turn around Sunset Shimmer had as a character. She went from the most disliked villain to one of the most beloved heroines.
Oh my god, THANK YOU! Finally someone put into words the feelings I've had towards Starlight since she got redeemed and was shown to be "redeemed" throughout Season 6. The first point you made was exactly why I love Sunset over Starlight; Sunset had to struggle under the gaze of everyone's mistrust, while Starlight has had nothing but every opportunity shoved forward to her on a silver platter.
"More, more, MORE! *crash*. The point of this video is I'm right about Starlight, and you're wrong because fuck you now give me money" Me: *On the floor laughing*
I think #2 & #3 is the HUGE problem that a lot of fanbases (as well as materials who are fan-base friendly) have, considering a character simply feeling crap about themselves means they're INNOCENT BABBU material, even if they stabbed a nun and robbed a bank beforehand. It's why the "girls will forgive any male character that has an angsty backstory!!!!!" is such a popular fandom complaint/in-joke on tumblr, ao3, etc... (though honestly the "guys will forgive any female character they wanna fuck" is just as bad for me)
Thank you Lily, thank you for perfectly encapsulating why I detest Starlight so much. At this point, there's practically nothing that can convince me to change my opinion of her, she's become that unbearable for me. I honestly wish they'd drop her from the show.
I often find I'm frustrated with how they handle Starlight, because I actually think there's a really cool character in her premise. I've headcanoned her enough that I like my interpretation, but I know what you're talking about with her flawed execution. I can imagine a lot of motivation that the text doesn't support, just allows as a possibility. If they wrote her as someone with the motivation and conflict that her backstory suggests, she could be SO interesting. But they don't really do with her what they could. There's little bits for me to latch onto and extrapolate on and make a character out of because I want to. If you don't like her, though, you have no reason to do that, and I admit she's bland with only the text. And really, how could you possibly have a character begin as a cult leader, then ruthless mare bent on revenge, then someone who has to reinvent their entire way of looking at the world under the instruction of their former arch-nemesis, then the unprepared sole hope of the nation, and have them become someone as bland as 'a little blunt, a little thoughtless, a little prone to guilt'? How do you do that?
While I enjoy Starlight, those are all very valid criticisms. And even I can't argue that she mopes too much. God damn does she have to bring up her past every time she appears? Also, fun little note: when the Digital Homicide music kicked in, I couldn't help but start to conduct to it. I don't know why, but when I hear music that is familiar and good, but that I can't sing or hum to, I conduct to it.
This about sums up how I feel about Starlight, especially about how she's stapled to their characters. I literally ignore her in her episodes and just try and salvage what I can. I think they should ditch her.
lmao EQD now has a poll about who had best redemption, ofc shimmy cherry changa is first, but guess what, starlight has more votes than discord Now excuse while i slit my fucking throat

Glass of Water on Sunset Shimmer? YAY! Time for gushing! :3

I wish they'd just write her out of the show and tell us she moved to a farm upstate.

Why are you slitting your throat over something so predictable? EQG's readerbase has been historically thick.
The ending just kinda proves the point of the people who call you petty
And it proves my point that the people who call me petty are talking out of their ass.
