I finally did it! Thank you. I'm doing both sides however. The other side you didn't do is way easier and not worth mentioning. I wanted to share a little tip. Leave the rear top bolt (one with the sleeve in the hole) in the hole unthreaded of course. Then you can rotate the head up and move/remove the other bolts as you come up. Then slide that bolt and remove. To save your new gasket from getting gashed repeat to install. This made it much easier when you are limited to just 2 hands and not wanting to gash the block or new gasket. ;)

Great vid. To the home DIYer looking to do this, I’d add that the engine can be loosened from its mounts and pushed up ~6 inches (still connected to the drive) with a floor jack under the pan to give more clearance to remove the heads.

@@berxnes I didn't have an issue, I did put a 2x6 between the pan and jack to spread the load a bit. During the process I was also able to move the engine left and right a couple inches, which was just what I needed to get the long bolts to clear. I pushed the engine too far once and began to pull the CV joint out, but it went back together no problem.

I am NOT a mechanic but when my dealer wanted 1600$ to replace both head gaskets and a full hour labour for an oil pressure sensor !?! I figured not just the sensor was getting screwed. Bought all the Felpro gaskets for 255$ and a torque wrench for 30$ and VOILA! Worked great! I needed that video as a vote of confidence. I recommend the second video on re-installing the head and there is also another video on how to prep the head for a smooth finish using fine sand paper and a board file. Excellent video, tips and advice. Very knowledgable mechanic.

The shop I took mine to when I lived in Seattle highly recommended these over OEM because OEM are garbage. My friend who works for Enterprise Rent a Car confirms that they're garbage and fail all the time. I need to do this at some point and these Six Star gaskets are probably what I'll use. There are other vids out there explaining why they fail and what these gaskets supposedly do to help curb the issue. *I don't work for any of these companies, I'm just a regular old Subaru owner (2006 2.5i) allwheeldriveauto.com/product/subaru-sohc-2-5l-head-gasket/

Except for the crappy coated Subaru gaskets that came on the EJ engines any name brand MLS gasket will do, as long as it is properly installed! The most expensive gasket will fail if the proper torque procedures are not followed.
It is easy to cut corners on this because by the time they fail, the check has cleared.
It isn't always negligence, it could also be ignorance, all boxer engines have to be torqued and then retorqued.
This is true for Porsches as well.
My mechanic has done dozens of these with Fel Pro MLS gaskets without a single failure, yet Mr. Subaru calls them "fail pro".

good vid, couple suggestions for you and others watching, if you remove the engine mounts and lift the engine those top bolts from the head will pass over the frame, making removal easier. Also if you do the passenger side first (there is more room on that side) then shift the engine to that side to do the driver side - a bit easier for removal and reinstallation of the head.

Just did these on a friends car, couple of tips. Being an x subaru tech I don't pull the intake, just lift it up a bit. The heads go out and back in from the bottom. Remove the roll pins for the intake on the right side head and the exhaust studs on the left. I set the head on a plastic box, gasket on the head and bolts in, but not all the way. Then slide the box under the car to ease lifting from the top. After you get the head up and bolts in the holes slide the gasket onto the dowels and then seat the head on the dowels. this will keep from damaging the gasket with the bolts. Also if you unbolt the engine mounts (2 bolts) and and the pitch stop on the top of the trans you can lift the engine with a floor jack (from under the trans) and move it slightly to one side then the other to give a bit more room. Makes all the difference. Also never do just one head gasket and I would always send the heads to a machine shop you will be money ahead in the long run.

Wanted to mention that when replacing head on driver's side, it's best to lower the head down into the space forward of the block, and then slide it rearward until bolts align. Before doing this, remove or reposition the black metal coolant tubing running along the block. Many thanks, Brian.

By turning both together slowly and by hand it can be done effectively without losing the cam wheel bolt torque setting. Good question. That WAS a sketchy move as was stated in the video.

Good Question! More than anything it's dissimilar metals and heat issues related to the exhaust routing. The heat cycles exacerbate the corrosion and sacrificial metal issue. Notice the drivers side typically fails first? That's the side the EGR pipe is on.

heads easily slide out FORWARD and UP (both of them - move AC comp around) you need to fit bottom back bolt into a groove in the frame. (but those f-ers are HEAVY and if you feel frustraited - STOP)

If you're doing this job, regardless of if you pull the engine or not make sure you send out the heads to be MACHINED!!!! The Subaru dealership that replaced mine @ 140k (before I bought the car) didn't machine the heads and as a result the driver side started leaking. So now I have to pay to have it replaced again. It's not that much to get the heads machined, just man up and get it done so you don't have to go through the headache again, like I did.

Thanks for the help, the left side was a pain until I remembered the old trick of using some string to hold the bolts and gasket in place. One wrap around each bolt and then to the other side of the head. You can tie the bolts and gasket in place with the bolt heads even with the rockers so it takes less room. It slides in so easy this way but you need to use a hook scribe to pull out the string because it tends to get caught. But it's so much faster and easier than trying to keep it all together and with all 6 bolts and gasket.

OK, I think i've commented before, but now I can update that i've followed this video and ripped both the heads off my gen2 liberty (legacy) wagon. It's a 2.2L SOHC and it's dead easy!
Everything comes off and out without any issues and I replaced the head bolts, head gaskets, exhaust and intake gaskets, rocker seals etc and it's now back together and running fine as far as I can tell. If the coolant doesn't disappear in two weeks i'll know for sure, but the old head gaskets didn't look great.
The SOHC heads were super easy to remove, even easier than the ones in the video. Mine has all the head bolts on the OUTSIDE of the rocker covers, but removing the covers gave a little more room to wiggle the heads out. On the left-hand side (passenger in Australia) the top front head bolt can come out on its own, the rest stay in until you angle it upwards. On the right side (drivers in AU) the top three can come out if you undo two of the lower airbox bolts and lift the box up by hand.
All up, the SOHC is quite easy to do with the engine in the car. I think I spent about $230AU on parts, and $70AU on oil and coolant. My pump and belts were already new, hoses were already new, etc.
    Thanks again for the video!

It's the aluminum and the exhaust routing. The exhaust from the EGR pipe and the exhaust going out the bottom makes the bottom of the engine heat cycle really hot and then cool over and over. The metal head gaskets react with the aluminum under these conditions. It's always the drivers side that fails because it's got the EGR pipe cooking the back of the head too.

Hey Briansmobile! Thanks for posting these video's on how to take apart and repair these Subaru Boxer type engines. They look so different if you are just looking at them under the hood. I'm just glad to have someone who will take the time to show me how to wrench on these suckers.
Also, I work for a company that processes brand new Subaru's as they come off the boat. Your comments about how cheap and crappy the cars are getting is 100 percent accurate. They are starting build them so that you cannot even take them apart to fix them or work on them at all anymore. Coming from a subaru tech. Leave all the spark plug wires on you do not need to remove them from the intake just take them off the spark plugs. Also where you turn both camshafts what I have always done is just put your crank bolt back in and use that to turn the motor to line up the timing marks. Much safer and you do not have to worry the cam bolts coming loose. At the end the big sensor on the head is your solenoid that controls your VVT variable valve timing as he shows in the video. The other little one is actually just a pressure sensor and when your ECM tells that solenoid to work it looks at the pressure sensor to make sure that the pressure goes up and down. FYI if you ever get a code for the VVT solenoid check that pressure sensor first 9/10 its that sensor and they are $25 compared to over $100 for the solenoid. They leak and that causes the reading to go low and the ECM thinks the solenoid did not move but it actually did the pressure sensor is just faulty causing that code.
