Ludwig van Beethoven - Adelaide, Op.46
Tenor Peter Schreier, accompanied by pianist Norman Shetler, gives a recital consisting entirely of Beethoven songs,
among others the song cycle ''An die ferne Geliebte".
Lyrics:
Einsam wandelt dein Freund im Frühlingsgarten,
Mild vom lieblichen Zauberlicht umflossen,
Das durch wankende Blüthenzweige zittert,
Adelaide!
In der spiegelnden Fluth, im Schnee der Alpen,
In des sinkenden Tages Goldgewölken,
Im Gefilde der Sterne strahlt dein Bildniß,
Adelaide!
Abendlüftchen im zarten Laube flüstern,
Silberglöckchen des Mais im Grase säuseln,
Wellen rauschen und Nachtigallen flöten:
Adelaide!
Einst, o Wunder! entblüht, auf meinem Grabe,
Eine Blume der Asche meines Herzens;
Deutlich schimmert auf jedem Purpurblättchen:
Adelaide!

What happened to the video of the cycle An die Ferne Geliebte? Did you have to take off from UA-cam? I remember watching it a few months ago.

He skipped a high A toward the end. Did he forget the note or was he afraid of cracking?
Joon Kang this high a is Not Original Beethoven , just a Tradition
I‘m sorry, I made a mistake. I was told that this high a is not originally by Beethoven. Now I checked with the Henle Urtext Edition and it’s comments and there is no doubt, that the a in bar 150 is written in every available source. The only differences in the sources concern the note before the a (f# or g). Maybe Schreier just made a mistake and mixed it up with bar 109 (while Shetler played the eighth notes as written in the score) or dit it on purpose just as you said, because he didn’t feel well. It was a big Beethoven Recital and he would have had every right to feel tired. On the other hand he never had problems with high notes as far as I know. So... there is a big chance, that we will never know! sorry for my wrong information! I’ll ask my colleague once more, maybe there is still something to find out about this!
Amazing? I beg to differ. This is a very intricately constructed piece, and Schreier inexplicably just...fails or refuses to fulfil entire sections of it. I kept noticing that when the music was obviously undergoing a movement from a piano section to a forte section that in the passages making the transition he just...quit. He also hammered away at one passage which is absolutely not forte, just because he felt like making a lot of noise, I guess. And then, he skipped an entire passage of more than six notes! From Beethoven! You can't do that. The passage I am referring to comes with the word "Adelaide" just before the last repetition of the phrase "deutlich" towards the end of the piece. There is supposed to be a six eighth note descent from the high A down to Bflat, followed by a quarter note and a couple other notes. Schreier simply doesn't SING them! Instead, I think he just holds the G and drops directly to the B flat. I mean, the beauty of the passage is partly that this goes very quickly so you have to be really good to articulate this descent completely and elegantly. And he skips it!
And why is it that you can't skip notes?
@@bharp4390 because if you do, Beethoven will rise from his grave, hunt you down, and whack you on the head with a very big stick. 😉
@B Harp43 Because, world class artists are assumed capable of singing every note of a piece. Jussi Björling 's version of this is the crown jewel. This gentleman is skipping notes, is slightly flat, missed an entire six note passage, and does not maintain a beautiful tone.
