Elizabeth Cook, PhD researcher, HEREE programme. Senior Analyst, Strategy and Performance, Edith Cowan University, Australia
This presentation aims to explore the application of a design research methodology in a doctoral thesis project that seeks to initiate a paradigm shift in graduate employability. Through practical examples and personal experiences, the presentation will demonstrate how the design research methodology facilitated the development, integration and assessment of a new relational employability teaching-learning framework across five units at my workplace university in Australia. The rationale behind choosing design research as the preferred methodology, in contrast to alternative approaches like action research and developmental evaluation, will be discussed. In addition, the distinction of labelling the project as design research, as opposed to design-based research or educational design research, will be elaborated upon. The presentation will emphasise the unique strengths and advantages of design research, and how the methodology aligns with a pragmatist philosophy. The presentation will also touch upon the specific research methods employed, including literature reviews, staff and student interviews, student questionnaires, and the analysis of institutional data for ongoing monitoring and evaluation. The significance of observation and note-taking as valuable tools for capturing essential details and contextual information during the design research process will be highlighted. By focusing on the distinctive features of this methodology and its direct application within the context of a university, the presentation aims to provide precise insights and considerations to inform research that similarly aims to transform practice, perceptions and experiences.
