I've played footbal in high school and ran track in college. Getting the wind knocked out of me, bruised, cut,or headache was nothing compared running a race in severe oxygen debt, about to collapse, barely able to breathe, heart exploding in your chest. This girl is tough, determined, and highly competitive, and a great teamate to think to crawl to the finish the way she did.She deserves major respect!
im in seventh grade and run cross country. I dislocated my knee cap during a race and kept running. my coach told me to watch this video and told me i was like her. i thought i was in pain when i ran but when i saw this i relized i went thrugh nothing compared to her. she really is a true cross country runner. (the girl who runs by at the end is on the high school team for my school!)
I think this is awesome...I can remember running races like this and managing for my high school team. The courage and determination of students like these to finish races is simply exceptional because Cross Country is good pain and agony of defeat, which does not relish when it comes to crossing that line and knowing that God has given your body the strength to survive such an obstacle. Quote me on that.
wow! that is absolutely amazing claire. i don't think i've ever seen a cross runner, or anyone for that matter, with more determination and guts! don't know how you did it breaking both your tibia and fibula, but what a performance! i wish you the best in your recovery :).
The girl who crawled is Claire Markwardt. She crawled because she broke her leg! She missed her sister's wedding that night because she was in the hospital. Her mother was my teacher.
Sorry if my comment seemed degrading to her performance. Its just that I 1st watched the Boys finish and saw the same event happen to a boy with a hearth condition as fought to finish while dropping flat on the ground each meter. He even tried to craw at a moment but fell right back down, and I just felt that that was truly heroic. His struggle was 2x as long as hers and it seemed weird that he didn't get the same recognition with an article mentioning him like she did.....unless I'm wrong
true but you can't give up a race unless it's life threatening. Thats what my cross country coach said though and I agree. Besides there were other people getting her anyway. But her courageness is great and she is brave, I admire that.
I completely agree with astralzenith. To a non-runner or an unserious runner, this may seem astounding or courageous, but to a regular runner this sight should seem like an expected normality. I mean what runner who ran through the entire race bearing agonizing pain would just give up a few meters from the finish line, at a race that big, where you're a few seconds from the finish.
These are good times for girls. Remember guys, the girls that run cross country arent built exactly like us. They don't have the same lung capacity as we do. So in general it is harder for them to run. But for me and my high school cross country team, I'm a freshman and we are currently 3rd in the state (freshman). We freshman run 8-10 miles a day and our average 5K times are around 18:30.
I don't blame them. They more than likely thought she was just exhausted from the run. There really is no way anyone could have known she broke her leg in 2 or 3 places. She showed a hell of a lot of determination to even crawl to the finish line.
This video was not uploaded because of the young lady breaking her leg, it was posted for all finishers in the state cross country meet. There are other videos for each division. Don't watch the rest of the video if you don't like it and go back to sitting on your couch and playing on your computer, let the real athletes wathc the videos.
The sustained agony your body experiences pushing yourself to the limit in a distance running event(if you're tough)does not compare to the type of pain through physical contact in sports like football.
cross country make your bone kinda brittle cuz the runners don't get enough rest and stress fractures form. Her tibia broke, then she fell. when she stood up her fibula broke because it could support her weight.
2:30 in if you don't care for all of the filler...but yeah it is hard to tell that what happened until the coach stood her up and the leg wobbled a bit.
no s*** sherlock! If it were me, i would have just sat there. Technically she DID get up, to her knees at least. Did i ever say she stood up? no. i didnt.
I mean that your almost finished with your 3 miles you stop to get her and give it up. I just saying that there were coaches unless it was life threating again. I would have stopped if I was one of those runners but my coach always told me not to stop unless someone is about to die or something. Otherwise, the other coaches would get her.
Are you kidding, you don't give up you race like that. You need to finish and she needs to finish. Unless it's life threatening then they will be okay. If somebody gave up their race because they felt sorry for me I would be so angry.
i go to school in florida, and i heard about this about 4 different times today. god bless her! real dedication is portrayed here.

what a bad ass...one of the coolest things i've ever seen
Great race Claire! Hope your recovery goes well! Your former teacher (and also a Berkshire CC runner), Mr. Unangst.
I give her so much respect. Not many people would finish a race. That is determination.

WOW. what a strong person to be able to get up and finish the race! kudos to her!

this sport is 100% all heart
they had a write up on the young lady from Berkshire HS in our local paper...truly remarkable what she did...most would have just laid there

You're a bit of an asshole, aren't you?
you are right. I timed his voice wrong. She got 67.

i saw this on tv. how did her leg break?? did she bend it wrong?? it looks like these girls are going through torture!
its a whole hell of a lot harder than football or baseball
Hahaha!! In Michigan...STATE Finals are held at The Michigan International Speedway!!! BAM !!!
How many miles is this?
wow how many miles was that??? i can only run 3 miles lol cross countrry in middle school so yea we train for 3-4 miles.
I can't tell if she broke her leg or lost a contact lens
@dudeitsmeredith Did she get a stress fracture because she overtrained during the season?
Now that's a warrior!!! Not Tiger Woods when he plays a round of golf with a head cold for a million dollars. I hope her leg is healing well.
how is there only 8 minutes?

why does the guy stand her up after her leg snaps in half?
i feel bad for her cause she was doing so well
The counter didn't say a number when she crossed the line.
Female - High School - awesome
@technosmiles I'm in 7th grade too! Except we have 5 practices a week and we do 3, 4, 5, or 6 every time.
just because shes tired...no broken bones.
@sbtbfanatic She's got the female athlete's triad, which includes osteoporosis. She's malnourished so she can keep her weight down.
115 is my friend Alexis
no s*** sherlock! If it were me, i would have just sat there. Technically she DID get up, to her knees at least. Did i ever say she stood up? no. i didnt.
