- From concept and design to full build and painting guide. A full tutorial on how I built, re-sculpted and painted the 1/16 Miniart Legionary figures.
Starting with the Miniart 1/16 Roman Legionary figure, I converted into a series of poses for a unique battle scene. Replacing the kit heads with much improved character faces from Reedees Miniatures. Each figure in the scene now has their own personality and individuality.
Detailing and sculpting in Greenstuff & Magic Sculpt putty mix, adding clothing detail, with scratch built parts for a unique pose and figure.
With Painting tutorial for the uniforms, armour and weapons. A scratch built base for a unique Roman Battle Diorama.
The scene depicts the last stand of the IX legion at Camulodonum (AD60) near modern Colchester (England). Where a Vexillation of about 800 Legionary foot soldiers of the 9th Legion were massacred by tribes of the Iceni, led by the female warrior queen Boudicca.
Awesome work !
Thank you kindly. 😊
Che meraviglia, congratulations
Thank you kindly. 😎👍
All your skill as a fine artist and modeller are on display here Marcus! Very well done action packed diorama.
Thank you mate, very kind of you. It’s a long video but hopefully enough in it of interest for modellers as well as casual visitors. Regards, Marcus. 😊👍
Super detail,top modeling
Thank you very much. 😊👍
Wow! I have seen and held some of these actual items, and done ancient and medieval combat reinacting. As well as modeling and scratch building in larger scales. This is amazing. People often think working with larger scales is easier, but to the contrary. The larger the scale the more detailed a piece has to be. I especially appreciated the bent pilum shaft, and the condition of the figures teeth in close up. Truly great work.
Thank you very much for the generous and kind comments on my work. Agreed, some think the larger scales are easier but as you say there is no hiding place and the detailing has to be correct. Many thanks.
Great job - top
Really really well done! A bynote, the bull wasn't Mithras. It was the symbol of that legion who were Hispana as they were raised in Spain
Many thanks. Artistic license for the shields, nobody knows for sure what they looked like, depicted or referenced it’s pure speculation as only fragments exist. I read that the bull is both linked to the 9th having its roots in Spain as you say, also with devotion to the Roman god Mithras who is usually depicted with bull. That was a historic reference only and I like the dualism.
Incredible! I was mesmerized by the music and detail.
Thank you kindly, glad you enjoyed the build. 😊👍
Outstanding work!!! Thank you for sharing your amazing talent and for including historical references!!!
My pleasure. Thank you for taking the time to watch, appreciated. 😊👍
Very good work! Respect to you!

Hi Marcus, that was absolutely outstanding, I am not a figure modeller, but would like to try some day, I have subscribed to your channel as, if this is the standard of your work then I wantbto see more, congratulations on a job extremely well done, best regards from a Kiwi living in Australia
Thank you Les, very kind. You might like my Chunuk Bair tribute diorama, Kiwi’s at Gallipoli diorama, it’s 1/35 but a great battle to commemorate. Also my Waler creek dio depicts light horse set in Australia just before WW1. Cheers M.
Amazing. Saw this diorama on display at stafford show. Looks even better up close.

Would be cool if you did more of these in the future. Reminds me of some old model magazine tutorials haha. Great work ^^ once again you made a masterpiece
Ha ha, thanks mate very kind of you. I’m better at modelling than I am putting these movies together, but hope there is enough information and movement to keep the viewer interested. I need to do more footage of me making and string that together into a movie, but I usually forget taking photos at each stage; then putting all those together hopefully in logical order. Thanks for following and commenting. 😁👍
Breathtaking skills displayed here... I'm simply amazed.
Thank you kindly, honoured. 😊👍

Did you use Epoxy Clay to cover seams
I use a mix of Greenstuff and Apoxie putty in various blends. About 70% resculpted figures. 😊👍

Hi Sir, may I humbly ask where to purchase these wonderful piece, thank you very much
Hi Andrew, this is a one off based on the single Roman figure from MiniArt 1/16 range. Each is converted into a unique figure so not commercially available. Thanks 😊

What did you use for the Fkesh Tonez
I use Jo Sonja acrylics for this build and the skin tones. 😊👍
I’m doing with Masterbox greeks
Nice one, they look good for 54mm plastic figures. Good luck with your own project. 👍

Who is the artist on the piano
What brand of paint a f brushes you use
Mostly W&N series 7, and some Rosemary & Co Kolinsky Sable. Size usually 0,1,2.
Do you make your own sculpt ing tools
They are simple sculpting tools from art stores. Silicon putty shapers are a cheap really useful sculpting tool for putty work.
How do get the Green Stuff so sheet flat
I use Vaseline when applying the putty and a mix of water and IPA 99% for smoothing.
I am not too sure but that type of roman armour was used just in thoracic not In bretannia...
Lorica Segmentata as depicted in the scene was excavated in 1964 in a large Roman find near Hadrians wall, with numerous archeological finds, with the latest I’m aware of in 2010. All the books I used as research referenced the use of the armour in 1st and 2nd century Britain, so I beg to differ.
Were dod you kearn to sculpt
Self taught. Sorry for the late reply.
Whos the music buy
Moonlight sonata by Beethoven. 😎
You should make a real videos not a slideshows. These are amazing works.
