  • Some say never clean a rimfire, others obsessively scrub their bore after every shooting session. So, who's right? Like so much in life, the answer falls somewhere in between. Michael Shae, author of Rimfire Revolution, goes unravels exactly when is the proper time to break out the jags and solvent and how to give your cherished rimfire rifle a scrubbing that will bring out its peak performance.

My technique, used for over 60 years is to just swab the bore with an oiled patch until no longer black, followed by dry patches followed by a lightly oiled patch and put away until next range session. Once a year I use solvent in bore and let stand for a couple of hours then swab a patch until no longer discolored, followed by a lightly oiled patch and then put rifle in storage along with a couple of dessicant packs. Has worked for me many years.

Truth is cleaning is different depending on the accuracy you expect. Clean when or before the accuracy dropes off

Well, Duane. I believe that Vudoo bore are highly lapped and would retain very little debris. And he may run a dry patch thru occasionally to get out the dry debris, and not 'call it' cleaning. He did mention that, too. My "Best" .22 is a CZ 455 with only a few hundred rounds thru it, and I only shoot 'medium grade' ammo like SK+. The bore on this gun thru a borescope (gasp!) looks just 'very shiny' with virtually no striations or rough areas. That barrel is a 'hammer forged' one, NOT button-rifled but NOT lapped except by firing. But I've seen the beginnings of a Carbon Ring after only 50 rounds, using my Borescope !! And I just use
Boretech-C4 on a patch on that carbon, let it sit a half-hour or so then clean out. I clean after every range day, usually 100 rounds or so. And that's only a $500 gun. YMMV

That is absolutely right brother and like I said I have yet to see one outshoot a cz on utube. And they sure can't outshoot any of my three cz457s target rifles take that to the bank.

What is his 'ability' for checking for a carbon ring in the chamber without a borescope? Enquiring minds want to know.

Y EL! And they are expensive. More than 20 dollars 4 ounces. I stick to Hoppes 9.

I usually run a bore snake thru every gun I shoot, once I get home. No fouling, no accuracy issues, no problems...

Same here. A spritz of gun scrubber down the bore from the chamber, then a bore snake with the end sprayed with gun oil.

You are the same guy who would call their 3-inch group at 100 yards "tack sharp".

Oh, I’ve seen you there…out on the range with me. Yep, you know all about me. One of the losers that follow me around. Making fun of my lousy groups. I remember you now.

I do believe in the deep cleaning but what do you think about using a bore snake you know before a match or after a match

Question- this is my first Ruger, so when I use the bore guide the cleaning rod hits the ejector, how do I get it out of the way so it doesn't scratch it? Or how do I prevent this from happening?

I pull a boresnake thru my 1450 sporter at the end of each trip to the range. That's all.

Bore snakes typically use bronze bristles or the ones that I have seen, which contains copper, it seems counter intuitive if you're looking to stay away from the traditional methods and use nylon brushes? Perhaps there's not enough on the bore snake to worry about? Do they even make an all nylon bore snake?

      Don't use a bore snake.

Used correctly, a bore snake will do a fine job, without needing bore guides

THAT much money in the rifle and not popping the $50 for a bore scope? Makes no sense to me.

Those guys are way over thinking something very simple. The solvent, plastic rod and plastic brush will never damage anything made out of metal on the rifle. Just clean it as you have done all other 22lr rifles.

What a crock! Just a commercial for some super over priced sh*t when you can buy trusted and proven over and over and over again Hoppe's for 5 bucks! And you don't have to turn your gun upside down, flip it sideways 3 times, stand on your head and fill the entire barrel with 30 dollar junk crap, do 6 summer salts, clap 5 times ... you get the picture 😂😂😂
Give me a break! Surprised he didn't say to finish it off with sh*tter lube! 😂😅

You must be shooting your grandpappy's critter gitter with Bucket O' Bullets ammo from Wallyworld. Just spray it out with some brake cleaner. Can you describe what "summer salts" are? 😂

When you shoot your pawnshop beater with some Thunderbolts with minute of beer can accuracy while listening to your favorite tunes from "summer salts", you don't need to clean it. Save your money for some Busch refreshments.
