      The only one that got me was the "I made you some... tea." I get it was meant to be misdirection but when it doesn't make sense after finding out the truth it is a cheap trick. The rest worked, her saying it creepily like that felt like it was there just to throw us off without making sense at the end of the episode. .

      I think it's more to show that she also cares about Joyce (except for the tricking us reason). She has been shown as selfish and self-absorbed and not show to care that her mom is sick when she's actually trying to pretend nothing is wrong like kids usually do when things like this happens. I think she honestly was trying to be nice to her mom, maybe a little because she needed comfort after what Buffy said.

      @@StalKalle That and also she was trying extra hard to get on Joyce's good side for when Buffy came back, she would've been in for a good tongue lashing when she returned home.

    One of my favorite things about this episode, and really the last few episodes leading up to it, was the way something about Dawn had irritated Buffy from the moment she was first created, much more so than was warranted by anything Dawn had actually done. In Superstar, Buffy was the first one to figure out that something was wrong with the world Jonathan had created… really, the only one, since everyone else only knew because Buffy told them, and even then, most of them had a hard time accepting it. That was with the whole world changed; with Dawn, the changes weren’t as extreme and there weren’t any obvious clues that anything had been changed, but still, IMO on some level Buffy knew something didn’t feel right, and that’s why Dawn was such an irritation to her. So I love the way that they have Buffy so irritated by Dawn for the last few episodes, and I love even more how, as soon as Buffy finds out Dawn is an innocent human being, a child who needs her protection, it’s the first time we see Buffy showing Dawn any genuine affection.

    • @cordeliaface
      @cordeliaface 10 місяців тому

      You know, it was bothering me how Buffy was initially behaving towards Dawn and it bothered me the writers didn't write her as a loving, protective, and kind sister from the get-go.
      I *really* love your analysis on this. It also makes so much more sense with the memories Buffy was given by the Monks (being afraid of becoming a big sister, and then being willing to take on responsibility for Dawn when her parents brought Dawn home from the hospital).

    For those who do not understand the colloquialism - "Making money hand over fist" : It's a nautical expression about drawing in ropes quickly - as one hand pulls in the rope (closed fist), the other is reaching over to grab the rope (open hand). The faster you can do this, the better deck hand you are. Substitute the rope with money.........

    I call that kind of spoiling "negative spoiling" meaning it takes away empty space. It takes away possibilities of waht things could or could not mean or be. Part of the fun is hypothesizing on what could be. Because let's be honest a lot of shows don't actually go the way you want with characters (you've heard me complain about Xander's progression in season 4) but first watches you can still tell yourself fanfiction during the down times to keep yourself going through rough patches. If people take away your options it makes the show feel smaller than it actually is. IDK that's just the way I've always explained it. I don't even know if it made sense outside of my own head.
    Negative spoilers are filling up the empty space with things, taking away the possibilities of what could go in the empty space.

    About why people talk about families in hostage, life and death situation: it's done to insight empathy in attacker. The more he knows about you, your name, how old, family members, jobs, ect.. the more he will see you as a human being, like he is, like his loved ones are and that makes it harder to kill. It's not a guarantee, but a good and recommended strategy if you find yourself in such horrific situation.

      @Logan_Baron 5 років тому +9

      Exactly. It humanizes them. Makes them real rather than just a paper target type "thing" or just an object. It's actually the recommended thing to do. People who have had their children kidnapped that appear on tv wanting their return are told to refer to them by name and say things about who they are. In cases where it isn't going to stop them from killing you, it isn't going to Make them kill you. They'd have done it anyway. So there's no downside.

    This is one of my favorite episodes of the entire show. The whole episode you are misled to believe Dawn is evil, only to realize in the last minutes she is completely innocent. And up until then we are made to think Buffy and Dawn are sisters, which seemed so forced, but when we actually find out the truth, their sisterly bond at the end of the episode seems so natural.

Dawn claiming that Buffy was adopted when we know that, well, it's the other way round; then Buffy realising that despite knowing the truth, she can't help but care for her moody sister; and then their talk about their mom and we viewers can see that yes, Dawn does love her mother, she's as human as the others :'(

    • @frakkintoasterluvva7920
      @frakkintoasterluvva7920 6 років тому +8

      Not even 14 year old... She has memories of a 14 year old, but she's really just existed as a person for a few weeks.
      A bit of trivia: Dawn was originally meant to be younger, but they made her 14 when they cast Michelle Trachtenberg. Many fans thinks that at times she acts younger than 14, because the role was originally written for a pre-teen. However, the revelation of her true nature means that this may be because the monks imagined a 14 year old to be like that, and/or wanted Dawn to be childlike so the Slayer would be even more compelled to protect her.
      In any case, it's really not fair, IMO, to complain about Dawn being a brat, as her personality is mostly a product of fabricated memories, and she's only had the opportunity to make her own decisions and have actual experiences for a few weeks.

      Right. In these early episodes, Dawn does annoy me, but in the same way an actual little sister would. I find her kinda cute and endearing at times, and then a second later, she does something irrational and 14-year-old-girl-y and I'm like, ughhhhhh. But that's what I love about it and the writing here because it evokes a pretty natural response. Never quite understood the hate.

    People say they have a family because they hope it will dissuade their attacker from hurting them, the implication being it's easier to hurt someone who no one cares about/depends on. If the attacker isn't a complete psychopath they might think of their own family and let the victim go. It happens.

      And on a completely unrelated note, but somehow this caused me to think of it, I hate it when people say something like,'They lost their only son/daughter.' as if someone who loses a son or daughter and has another, is fine somehow. Crazy talk. On a more related note, how the news will say something like 'she was a mother of four' 'he was a father of two' as if someone who has children is somehow more important when they die than someone who doesn't. This also drives me nuts.

    thank u so much for addressing the spoiler issue at last!! People think they are being subtle or clever pointing out little lines. But when u have literally hundreds of people all doing it, guess what? Ain't so subtle any more! And completely ruins the mystery for you. As a first time viewer, when the show wants u to be confused, u should be confused! Not thinking "Oh I know this gets explained because 1238403846 people have made a *subtle* comment about it."
    I just wish u had posted this message sooner because I have been saying for weeks that u need to, because I knew what was coming and I knew it was gonna ruin things for u. But im glad u have at least said something now.
    And also I don't think it would hurt for u to give a VERY quick reminder at the end of every video saying "Please guys remember, don't post any spoilers, don't even post any subtle hints or references that u think I won't get, because they DO ruin it for me. thanks!"
    You didn't listen to my warnings before and look what happened, and trust me there is more crazy shit to come in this show, so I really think giving a little reminder like this at the end of every video would be best for you.

    Spike’s “Out for a walk...bitch” is one of my favorite lines in the whole series. Sorry people are spoiling things- I think sometimes people neglect to remember part of watching something for the first time is your lack of knowledge and awareness of certain easter eggs and foreshadowing, and that a lot of excitement can be found with realizing them on your own. That being said, in any public forum, there will always be people who are ignorant to or have a lack of concern that they are spoiling things with certain comments. And for those people, I truly am sorry.

  • @Helbore

    Personally, I think you were far nicer than I would have been regarding spoilers!
    It should be pretty simple, really. If there's no way you could possibly know something without future knowledge, then its a spoiler. It doesn't matter if its a big spoiler revealing a massive plot point or stating that a single line has more meaning than it currently appears. If you cannot know it without having seen a future episode, then it shouldn't be brought up.
    Someone once did this to me with another show, where they were watching at US pace and I was on UK pace. They simply said that a certain action by a specific character had more meaning than it seems. They were convinced that wasn't a spoiler, but of course it made me suspicious of an act that should have seemed very straight-forward. A few episodes later, I guessed that character's major plot twist because of that simple spoiler and it ruined what should have been a brilliant twist.
    Its not nice to be spoiled.

I can guarantee you that the viewers have a lot of moments where they look down on the reactor because they didn't pick up on something, didn't understand something or they have theories about how the show is going to go and it turns out they are completely wrong so the viewers explain things in the comment section. Just realize that by explaining it you're pretty much giving a lot away, let her discover things on her own.

    She's here! Our lady in red! Be aggressive! B-E aggressive! (She was in Bring It On.)
    Giles in the wizard's robe and hat - LOL moment every single time. I started cracking up as soon as Buffy entered the Magic Shop, just waiting for ASR to see the reveal.
    Poor Dawnie. Those weird scenes when she's acting slightly suspicious is of course to make us doubt her just as Buffy does, but in retrospect just feels tonally inconsistent with what we've seen of Dawn up to now. I think they played those moments too heavy-handedly.
    "I have a family" - this sometimes works, though, so it doesn't hurt to try. Obviously it didn't help the dude here though. :(
    Spoilers - when the show aired, we had those lovely "Previously on Buffy" intros, so it is sometimes easy to forget that someone who doesn't have those wouldn't know what to pay attention to. Not an excuse, just maybe an explanation. I know I've made some "it'll make sense" comments, and I apologize and will do better.

      I agreed with you on the weird scenes with Dawn acting slightly suspicious tonally inconsistent moments from Dawn in this episode being too heavy handed. Works well the first watch only. On rewatches, it's just an eyeroll from me.
      I will say, though, it's really rare for this show to have moments that don't play well on rewatches, so it's easier to forgive than for something like...Rings of Power which played up "who is Sauron" from the get-go meaning rewatches 5 years from now are going to be chock full of eyerolls.

    *slow clap* Thank you!!! I’ve been waiting for you to address those stupid spoilery and hinty comments since season 2. It has literally been driving me crazy to the point where I don’t even like to look at the comment section anymore. A lot of people here are under the mistaken impression that a spoiler is only defined by directly pointing out something that happens in a future episode. They think as long as they hint indirectly it’s not a problem. To be blunt, they’re not smart enough to realize that anyone with basic deductive reasoning can put two and two together and decipher their ingenious code. Not only is it unfair to you, it’s unfair to your many viewers such as myself who come here to watch a genuine, authentic reaction. I’m so sorry you’ve been spoiled on the Dawn stuff, but don’t fret there are many more surprises to come.

  • @alyssa721

    The whole "I have a family" thing is actually a valid tactic for when somebody is holding you hostage or in general threatening to kill you. Its supposed to make it harder for them to dehumanize you and treat you like an object that's easily disposed of. If you can make some connection there, either because you can find something you have in common with them or something they sympathize with, it's harder for them to kill you. In theory, anyway - pretty sure that never works in the Buffyverse...

    I think the scene i watch again from this episode is Spike's "out for a walk bitch"
    When i first saw this episode and saw the end the first thing i thought was "well this is because they are on the WB and trying to be a teen show and the main cast is growing up so let's just throw a kid in there randomly." It's definitely very Jonathan from Superstaresque. maybe that was the point of that episode it was the show practicing with perception distortion.
    Fun fact Claire Krammer who plays the strong crazy woman this episode was in Bring it On with Eliza Dushku. It's that cheerleading movie from back in the day.

      Well, I will argue that if you say something super casually it can sometimes go under the radar as not really a spoiler. But it really has to be something so obscure or small that the viewer wouldn't even think of it. Usually I do something like when I've accidentally let something important slip. I just pretend what I said was nbd and the person usually forgets. But I'm not even sure most people have the finesse to do that. The whole *nudge nudge wink wink* or even explicit "wait for x episode" that are definitely spoilers, because they're 100% coloring the experience.

    As to why people always talk about their family, etc, it’s because it’s a psychology trick so to speak. The goal is to tell the other person your name, what you do, your family, and all kind of other personal stuff so that your kidnapper sees you as a human being. If they do, they will usually have more qualms about hurting you, unless they are insane or in this case, a demon haha.

Like when Spike showed up the first time long ago if someone had said that you'd be happy to hear that he will be back more prominently in season 4 (I only say because you are past season 4 now) it takes away a little bit of the thrill you'd have of being surprised, even if it didn't tell you any plot points.

    15:45 "Why do people do that?" Actually, appealing to violent criminals' sensitivity by playing on the vulnerability of others works so well that it is a common police tactic when interrogating suspects for information.
    There was one famous case in the States where a police officer got an arrested suspect to admit where he hid his weapon by saying that if it's in the public, children might get their hands on it and hurt someone. In TV, playing on vulnerability never works against the bad guys--but in reality it works, not always, but more than you'd think.

    REGARDING SPOILER COMMENTS: As fans of the show, sometimes we might get carried away with excitement at the awesomeness of what is to come and be compelled to say something that we think is innocuous and does not give anything away, but we forget that we had absolutely NO idea of what was going to happen next when we first experienced this masterpiece of storytelling and THAT was a big part of what made it so unbelievably amazing. So please just resist, fellow Buffy lovers. Allow this next generation to experience the life-altering joy of absorbing this series with the same delightful, mind-boggling incredulity with which we were blessed. Otherwise we, as fans, are actually ruining for someone else that which we love the most and depriving them of the very experience that we so passionately relish.
    In other words, stop ruining that which you love.

    I haven't been commenting on your videos, but even though I've seen the show three times, even I was annoyed by how much people were trying to explain in the comments without really "explaining".
    Then I was thinking how something like this could be avoided, and I started thinking about how you're doing all the Agents of Shield episodes before uploading any, and I thought "wow, she's really not going to get spoiled there." Well, unless someone spoils the following seasons, which I've seen people be on the border of doing as well.
    To the viewers, I would suggest that you comment as if you were watching these episodes for the first time as well. Share what you thought of the episode without referring to ones she hasn't seen yet, and with very few callbacks to things that have already happened that may not have seemed important to you when you first saw the episode.
    If it were me, I would HATE to be spoiled for a show I'm this excited about.

Where most of the characters on this show seemed to be a conglomeration of different traits for storyline purposes, Dawn was just like a "real" (you know what I mean) teenaged little sister. They could have had a Spike/Dawn/Anya/Giles spin-off and I would have been a happy camper! Cheers.
