Dwarkadhish Temple, located in the coastal town of Dwarka in the state of Gujarat, India, is one of the most revered Hindu temples in the country. Steeped in legend and history, this temple holds immense religious significance for devotees of Lord Krishna. The name "Dwarkadhish" translates to "King of Dwarka," and the temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna, who is believed to have established his kingdom in Dwarka.
The temple stands on the banks of the Gomti River and is believed to have been built around 2,200 - 2,000 years ago. While the current structure dates back to the 16th century, it is believed that the temple has been rebuilt several times due to damage from natural calamities and invasions over the centuries.
Architecture:
The architectural style of the Dwarkadhish Temple is a fascinating blend of Chalukyan, Rajput, and Gujarati styles. The temple is built on a high platform and features a five-storied spire, which rises magnificently above the city skyline. The spire is adorned with intricate carvings and sculptures depicting various scenes from Hindu mythology. The temple complex also includes several smaller shrines dedicated to other deities.
Legend and Beliefs:
According to Hindu mythology, Dwarka is considered one of the seven holiest cities (Sapta Puri) in India. It is believed to be the place where Lord Krishna resided and ruled after he left Mathura. The city of Dwarka is said to have been submerged into the sea after Lord Krishna's departure. However, the temple stands as a symbol of his eternal presence.
Devotees believe that a visit to the Dwarkadhish Temple and offering prayers here can bring blessings and fulfill their desires. The temple is particularly crowded during festivals such as Janmashtami (Lord Krishna's birthday) and Sharad Purnima, attracting thousands of pilgrims from across the country.
Rituals and Practices:
The temple follows elaborate rituals and traditions that have been passed down through generations. The day begins with the Mangla Aarti, which is performed before dawn to wake up the deity. Throughout the day, various rituals such as Abhishekam (ritual bathing of the deity), Bhog (offering of food), and Aarti (worship with lamps) are performed at specific times.
