Love the commentary on the human psyche during the 4 stages of learning. Very good video. I'm horrible with regular shavettes and went into that one with a false sense of security due to the cap plate. Beautiful design from a historical family in shaving brought back by their heirs.
false sense of security, that's a good way to put it -- I did cut myself day 1 just by rushing and being careless. I don't like regular shavettes, I feel like they are great for shaving somebody else. I do love the overall design as well, bit of a striking look to it!
Great shave Michael! Your videos are one way to help us overcome our unconscious incompetency! Preferring a straight razor over DE, I REALLY enjoy the Razorine. In fact, it may be my favorite razor for lazy DE shaving days. I can see how opinions may vary widely on the razor but for me: 1) I prefer using both hands when shaving - engages both sides of the brain 2) I like the flat head - makes it easier for me to cleanly shave under nose and other precision areas 3) smooth and efficient shave cleanly shaved in 2 passes - as efficient as my slant 4) nice change from the same old ho-hum safety razors Thanks for taking time to make these vids!
The best part of all of this is how many options we have to find the right products that work for us, and I feel like the Razorine is a great example of that! It is funny how little control I feel I have with my left hand, I may try using it more during regular shaves as well.
I need to rewatch this now, I have no memory of all the deeply profound things I said, but I am very confident I said things that are likely to change the course of human history. Also I am modest.
I like the description of the levels of competency. I’ve definitely had very similar thoughts on that before. As far as work goes, the personality type that causes me frustration is the arrogant unconsciously incompetent person. They think they know but they don’t know their head from a hole in the ground. Great video Michael, yet again you get into those little grooves of information that nobody else on UA-cam gets into. Have a good one.
Ah, the Unconsiously Unconsciously Incompetent person! The best: I *think* I know everything, but I can't see how little I do know. Glorious. Thanks for watching!
Hi Michael- Great shave today; thank you! Great job with the razor! Nice to see the LPL again- as you mentioned, a very nice soap indeed! I hope the holiday weekend is going well and all the best! Have a great week!
Great shave! I like the idea of the razorine... you get the experience and same movements as using a shavette or straight razor.... but you have the added protection of the safety bar instead of a completely naked blade. It would be a great way to really dial in the ambidextrous movements needed for straight razor shaving.
Michael Freedberg thanks! And yes I reckon within a month am individual would become a pro for sure. I use straight razors most of the time.... that being said I bet there would still be a bit of a learning curve with this one.
Great shave Michael. It takes about 30 days worth of daily shaves before you get the hang of straight razor/shavette shaving and the muscle memory kicked for me in about 60 days.
Very nice and interesting shave, Michael! This razor has intrigued me, but I have yet to try one. I've never used a shavette before, so... Thanks for the review! Cheers! -Rob
Hey Michael, why not rotate the handle on the other side of your face to keep the right side facing your skin. That way you don’t have to change hands. It’s easier to show than tell.
I think I know what you are driving at, and it did not really occur to me to do that. I will have to try to remember that for next time, thanks for the idea!
I know that some people put a rubber sleeve over it, but I wanted to use it as designed, and it did work. Thicker might be better, but this makes it feel nimble and light. Later!
Nice job with the Razorine Michael💈💈 As interesting as the razor is, I see no advantage over the typical DE. Glad you are enjoying using it though. LPL is a great performer for me, I only have the tallow version "Oud Santal", fantastic scent and performance is stellar. I never load a brush from a soap container, so I never have to leave the container open to the environment🤔 Cyril said the same about the soap I have, but I haven't found it necessary. Great video and review as always👍 Enjoy!
Cyril says to do it, I do it! Leave it open so he can sleep at night. it's fun to use something different, and I bet there are plenty of people out there who just immediately feel comfortable with the Razorine. I have never tried the LpL tallow soap, but I want to...
I've wanted to get one, but i have knocked myself with a Gillette tech clone and even a cheap shave factory twist to open butterfly safety razor .. There's a new version of the razorine with knurling on the handle, I'm interested in it.. maybe in a year..with a super mild blade like a derby extra, shark super chrome, or a Vikings blade mild razor blade..
I have that set-up, the Derby works best in the Razorine (2). I usually use Feather in a Feather razor or a Ralf Aust straight razor: both of these are easier than the Razorine which, even with the Derby blade is aggressive. I need better technique probably. I will return to it at some point. I am now shaving everyday and hope the practice and skin preps me for the next Razorine shave.
Nice shave, Michael. I'd be real nervous around my jugular area! I have thoughts of someday trying a shavette. The handle on that one looks a little small for me. Have a safe and great week.
Shavettes really are just rougher at first, it's hard to get going without some nicks or cuts. Keep going, though, and you might find a new way to shave that you love! Yes, be careful on your neck :-)
Hi Mr Freedberg!!Great video as always!!May I ask you:How do you clean-sterilize it before you first use it?If you cleaned it because logicallly speaking it is brand new!But mine came from the shave shop brand new with little stains and something like oil...I would be gratefull if you cleaned yours,as this as mine also specifically is a brass item to tell us ,what is a proper method...Thank you in advance and keep up the good work!!
If I really want to sterilize it, I would soak the razor in a light solution of Barbicide for no more than 10 minutes and then rinse thoroughly. As for cleaning, I just use an old toothbrush and some dish cleaning soap and just scrub/rinse/scrub/rinse/scrub/rinse. All good!
@@mfreedberg Thanks a lot!!I tend to proceed it for sterilisation, despite it is brand new product. My main concern about it is if can damage the brass coat...
Good shave with an unusual razor. Did much better with it than I did with my Duane. (The bloody painful memory still persists.) It seems that housecats are the bêtes noirs of shaving videos. (As I've said elsewhere, if all else fails, one can shake a razor at the cat and say "you know, you don't HAVE to have fur!" If you try this, please let me know how it works out.) Best wishes.
I tried to find the timestamp of the crashing about, but I could not find it with just a quick scroll through the video. She is so crazy and wild sometimes, it just makes me laugh as she hurtles through the room -- so much fun!!
nice shave.interesting fact about the soap.i just receive a tin a lpl rose de pushkar and went on.no instructions who cares.thou i dont think i see any.should i care if i'm a bowl "LOADING" fanatic?
Loading from a bowl? What next?? I know some people have had issues with the soap developing black spots in the tin, but I have had mine for quite some time now and no issues. Just load away and leave the tin open for the soap to dry even more.
Yep, consciously incompetent is how I feel when trying my Spartacus straight razor. I got it honed, and bought a strop, from u/roctraitor, but jeepers, it is a different experience! So far, I've only my cheeks, no second pass, and finished with a DE. A work in progress, to be sure!
Give yourself the time and space to grow into it, it's not a race or competition. Go at your pace, grow your confidence bit by bit, and relish your successes. u/roctraitor is a great place to start, too!
the Synbad is really good, the Timberwolf is also really good, and there are some of the larger knots from Yaqi (the "monster" all black one, for example) that are also quite good. I am not as big a fan of the tuxedo knot, I think there are definitely better options out there.
Interesting concept, but seems redundant to me, It is basically a DE with a long side handle. I wonder how doe this compares to a Kamisori Japanese razor . Great videos...
Very different face feel; this feels much safer in use and with less natural tendency to nick. The DE blade and head design are gentler and more forgiving.
Given the size and shape of top cap and the fact that the razor is kept quite flat as you say in this razor, do you think that the Razorine has a good bit of blade chatter? From the way you have described what blade chatter is, I feel like I have noticed quite a bit of blade chatter when using this lovely razor. By the way, never try to shave your head with it! Speaking from personal experience, but overall I still love having that razor. 🤣 Take care.
Yes, I think the edge control is on the light side, so you have the potential for blade chatter. Give how flat the blade is, and the exposure, I think there is just no way to avoid a bit of chatter, so that is where the angle becomes more important.
First, my today's shave... I used a soap with a bull design outside the package,I am not sure if you are familiar with this one... www.atgshaving.com/attachments/%CE%91%CE%BD%CF%84%CE%AF%CE%B3%CF%81%CE%B1%CF%86%CE%BF-%CE%B1%CF%80%CF%8C-img_20190526_111313-jpg.48871/ I am in stage 0 with Razorine and in stage 3 with DE's. I use both hands when shaving! Yeeees! Load the darn thing from the puck once! Make it messy! The Chati burned the skin when first applied? George
No, the Chatillon Lux feels great going on in either format - both feel soothing when you apply them. I don't load from the puck so that I can continue to share samples from the container without ever touching the soap with a brush, as a lot of people get nervous about samples from "used" soap.
I used to shave with a lousy pastic razorine when i was 17 or so in Genoa. I thought it was cool to let everyone else know that I could handle such a weapon. It did not shave well on a young skin and inexperienced hands.
Nice video. It looks like a de razor on a stick, nothing like a straight razor or shavette. I did try a shavette, because it looks badass, like a straight, and at a point i belived i was competent enough, and put in a sharper blade, bang two nasty cuts. Nice philosophy or look at it. I think you where nerveous today you did overload the soap, but great lather. 😁 So this razor is not for me, i rather want to get more used to using my se razors, that i sometimes struggle with the angle, and that handle looks uncomfortable, and it does not look like a straight razor at all. Imo.
It's a bit of a different beast, true, but it does not feel *that* hard to get used to. I can see how the handle can be a big turn-off, but it is certainly better than any of the shavettes I have used (certainly feels safer). Overloading, because nervous? Never!!

Thanks, Gabriel!
Your stages of learning strikes me as very "LeisureGuy," and not in a bad way. :) Insightful!

has that soap the lavenda scent ? I love le père lucien all very nice scents
