Next time when you are getting the air out of the brakelines put a bit of flexible hose on the vaulve. Also clean everything the brakefluid touched off with brakecleaner ASAP!!! The brakefluid will eat the paint away in the matter of days.
I once had a similar problem with the handbrake on a Vauxhall Combo fitted with rear disc brakes after I installed new pads. I can’t remember how I solved it but it probably involved doing something with the caliper to adjust the pads up to the disc because the auto adjuster is a ratchet type thing.
I used the large syringe technique with bleeding my brakes and found it improved my brakes by at least 10 percent compared with the old fashioned way of pumping the brakes My bro first used this large syringe system on his motorbike and found out it works superbly as well on cars. The pedal on my car bites right near the top when the engine is running and sure you cannot get better results than this.
For the handbrake cables, sometimes they have a certain way around such as one cable will be slightly longer as it will be set to be a certain side. One side will be driverside and other the passenger side so could be that u have them on the wrong way round
If you can obtain clear plastic tubing that will slip over the bleed nipple, you’ll find bleeding brakes is much neater. Usually we put the other end of the tubing in a clear container of brake fluid. That way you can see the air bubbles clearly, and you won’t have the mess of brake fluid dribbling down the caliper and/or suspension parts. In the USA, we NEVER use copper tubing for brake lines. Copper tubing is weak, and can fracture or burst. Very unsafe.
Handbrake cable issue - maybe it is just because you reset the piston's so one side might be closer to the disc than the other? I'd try starting the car and pumping the brakes a good few times before buying a new cable. I'm no mechanic but it seems worth a shot. Keep up the good videos 👍
When bleeding unless manufacturers says different bleed using furthest away at rear, then front diagonally across from the one you just did. Then back to the other rear then to the front closest to master cylinder. But like you did it works so ain't complaining just stating the training I've had.
I had a similar issue with my hand brake cable, after replacing my rear hubs. It turned out to be uneven wear on a used set of pads. Brought new pads and it resolved the issue.
@The Savage Garage actualy you can use GM 24425108 Bosch 1987477527 (1590mm) because your brake calipers Bosch but your brake cable for Lucas brake caliper.
The issue with the handbrake cables might be caused by them being for the Lucas system as i mentioned before. When searching for new ones make sure they are for the bosch rear calipers and let us know in the next video if they are any different. Keep up the work!
Hi @TheSavageGarage having just bought a 2003 Vauxhall Astra 1.6 automatic i think the thermostat is stuck open and i was wondering if yourself or any other experienced guys on here could possibly tell me if its a big job to replace as i read you might have to take the timing belt of to replace the thermostat is this correct or not thanks
I would spray spray grease inside the rear brake gaitors if i were you as the handbrake cable can stick and not fully release the cable off and you end up with binding rear brakes. Vauxhall replaced bosch calipers with lucas ones and they made the handbrake cable a bit to short on early vauxhalls from factory causing the rear brakes to bind a little as well. I used to get rear brakes binding all the time before i sprayed grease down those mini gaitors. Use the thin pipe and insert into the top of the gaitors and shove it right down & spray. Last off the 2 gaitors on mine i found were split both in two so i packed some copper grease right down in there and carefully superglued with loctite superglue both the gaitors back together and all is perfect still years on without retopping up. Good video m8.
Just letting you know, some vauxhalls have self adjusting hand brake cables, so basically when you drive and park up and apply the handbrake, it does get tighter over time as it settles in
Love the vid mate! I have a brake bleeder force feeder thing it looks like like an oil can with the tube at the end and goes from nipple to reservoir and goes backwards. and when I did the brake job I cant find the bleeding thing 😂 so ended up doing it the ordinary way with the drink bottle 😩 anyways that brake job and conversion looks stunning 👌🏽
Hi mate I love watching your videos I know it’s not related to this video but could you show us how to take the gear knob of a mk 2 Clio there is no video on UA-cam for this people on forums are saying hack it of but I know how good you are with cars and thought if anyone can do it you could thanks buddy wb
Looking good fella 😁 glad iv already got 5 studs (discs) on the rear of my polo just need my callipers paining. The car is black but might keep it stock-ish and do them silver
I had same problem with hand brake and failed MOT. In frustration I tighted it up and pulled it up like the hulk. I herd a loud "boing" and somehow that sorted it lol. Still have no idea what caused it because I am not gonna go behind that exhaust to replace it. (Unless some guy puts up a video of himself doing it first)
Always use the ring side of the spanner, those bleed nipples don't like open enders. Also use a clear tube on them when bleeding to stop the mess. And yes- DOT 4 is nowhere near as good at stripping paint.

Get yourself some washer bottle hose from halfords. Hit the end with a hammer to soften it up a little and it will go over the bleed nipple and you'll be able to catch it all next time mate. Wouldn't wanna ruin your lovely new paid work. Car looks great keep up the good work James and you'll be at 50k in no time !
Looks like the bracket that holds the handbrake cable on you've put them on the wrong sides I think they should point backwards and clip into that little plastic cotton real looking thing
Nice when the nipples do as they're intended. I bought one of those Sealey bleeders for my Corsa C only to come up against stubborn rusty "no spanner or socket can make me move" nipples.
@The Savage Garage, Have you checked that the handbrake is not pulling uneven, like 50 sec in this video? ua-cam.com/video/NRkBDswVzOA/v-deo.html Also check is the handbrake arm on the caliber, is a one position only or if it can be repositioned.
James, Great video! Could you consider shouting out fellow UA-camr “Micks Mowers” he’s just started his channel with his young son and it’s very much in your vain of fixing in your shed like you and RetroRestore. His young fella is collecting stickers from UA-camrs for their toolbox if you could spare it?

I had a madness with my brakes and got brake fluid EVERYWHERE over the car... You know what happened? ... Nothing. Its been 2 months.
@@YesNoVideo If you sprayed it all down than you should be fine
Nah I have not touched it. Cars been sitting there since i gave up on breaks. Needs 3 new calipers. All its had is rainwater for 2 months.
YesNoVideo idiot.
NLsmily people say that a lot, I don’t think brake fluid is anywhere near as corrosive as it once was, I didn’t clean them off though don’t worry
Alot cleaner if u put clear hose on the nipple when bleeding main reason is u can see when the bubbles stop, thats why tbe bleed nipple is that shape.
David K I know
Best car channel on youtube it's a fact , you are really good at presenting and explaining keep up good work.

try using a clear hose or any hose connected to the bleed nipple will save fluid running all over the place

A job well done there James, looking forward to seeing the wheels on.
Great brake conversion video jame. Like u said there are always some snaggs. Be good when it's sorted.
Hi I was told by an old mechanic if l spilled brake fluid on a painted surface, pour water over it as soon as you can as this kills the brake
Fluid.
Awesome work mate! I love your videos
I'm 3 seconds in and thinking are you 100% done!
Can this tool be used for a brake fluid change?
hello I like what you do, I also have an astral year 2001. Could you help me with the dimensions from the shock absorber from the engine hood.

It's almost there now mate just need to crack on with those snowflakes and get it back on the road 👍
You done a great job there! I won't say anything about the hose lol.....
I swear you have to whipe away the excess brake fluid after you loosen the brake nipped. Isn't it corrosive and could damage the brakes?
Just letting you know, some vauxhalls have self adjusting hand brake cables, so basically when you drive and park up and apply the handbrake, it does get tighter over time as it settles in
May be wrong but think it’s too old for self adjust on this,
Nasif Ishraq I think on cars with internal shoes you’re correct but not on this car, cheers though!
@@TheSavageGarage oh wait yeah you are correct my bad!
Some cars you adjust the handbrake by pumping the foot brake and operating the hand brake at the same time
love this, i think your front pads are in backwards
On most cars, im not sure on vauxhalls but the wear detector on the pad goes on the inside
