These deuce and a halfs are crude, loud, rough riding, hard to steer, unbelievably hot in the summer time, cold in the winter, fuel guzzling, strictly utilitarian, and leak in places where there are no fluids and THAT'S WHY I LOVE THEM! Man they're just beast that appeal to me. I'd rather drive my deuce than my new truck. I love my ole deuce and take good care of her. If mine ( 1969 model ) could talk, oh the tales it could tell!
I pack a bucket of sand during winter. A bag of kitty-litter is handy but once you open it, you are committed to use all of it. Trust me! the above are a whole lot easier than hangin' tire chains around them tires.
JackHew same here plus I'm buying a trailer one of my nebors complained about the 18'wheeler in the driveway I quickly asked " do you own this property what's that no see that road keep walking"
My wife just got back from Afghanistan. A logisitics officer - she actually wrote the logisitics plan for the ANA (am quite proud) - so, of course, I bought her her own deuce. LOL. M35A2 (d). Much different from the deuce we built under license here in Canada (Bombardier. Auto Transmission. Power Steering. Hard top. No duallies.). Despite it being one the the first vehicles on my orders, M35A2 deuce has been a learning curve for me. Very happy to find this series of videos. The shifting video alone was magic. Just started our winter up here, should be fun with this. (Bought a surplus heater to install. From the videos I imagine I should still "bundle up".)
Drove these all around Bosnia and Croatia (Navy Seabee) about 17 to 19 years ago. Always hearing my passengers in the back complain that I must have been searching for every pot hole I could find. I guess they thought the thing had a ton of soft suspension. My memory isn't so great though as I don't remember that gear pattern. One time the equipment guys hooked up forklift for me to tow at the last minute as we were going out on a convoy. I never got out of the truck, they just hooked it up and said I was good to go. I didn't notice anything really different towing it, till a few miles in when the convoy stopped because the fork lift's breaks engaged and apparently they were about to catch on fire. The old deuce didn't even feel it and just kept moving on. The guys behind me saw those breaks smoking though.
Notes from TAC Air Force... I drove one for 12 years of my career. 1. Top speed is governed at 56 MPH. 2. Ear Protection is required. 3. NO CDL, because the brakes are hydralic, with air over... 4. drain the air tanks nightly! (Prevents RUST and ICING!)
Thanks for the input. I personally found that driving over 52 MPH killed the MPG cutting it almost to half what I got at 45 MPH. Per the state DMV website a CDL is required in the state of CA for any vehicle with 3+ axles. Yes, everyone please drain those air tanks it's surprising what comes out after just a few hours. Also, yes wear that hearing protection I simply use an old set of ears from my range bag.
Glad you made a comment. You are the real deal having put many miles on a truck like this one. And you think they are awesome IMHO that is an endorsement good enf for me. I found one in my area for 6000 I plan on pushing snow and in the summer carrying rocks for landscaping. Thanks for your service
My REO beast used to do this; until I did some disassembling and serious cleaning and repacking of brgs and re-lined ALL brake shoes and now we iz in bizz. I also never park with hand brake applied for long periods; this is what wheel blocks are for! I used to tie red REO to a tree (or something similar) with a length of 2-inch rope, just for the visual impact. You'd be amazed at the response that one got. Specially in town!
Great video, thank you for making it. I was in the Army and spent a whole lot of time in one of these, sitting in the back, driving and co-piloting as well.
I drove one of those during my first tour of duty in the sandbox. I used it nightly to shuttle soldiers back and forth from Kuwait City to an American base. Once, the rear drive shaft broke. No problem. Engaged front drive axle and kept on trucking! On my second tour, I handpicked an old 5 speed because it was simple to operate and incredibly reliable. The newer deuces spent lots of time at 3d shop, but my old deuce got me to and from my duty every day.
Headed out to pick up my new (to me) deuce this weekend. Your videos helped me quite a bit. Both information-wise and keeping me occupied with "deuce porn" while the search for my truck was underway. Appreciate what you do.
Can you make more m35a2 videos please. Winch use and proper care, trail fixes, and general how to's on repair. Thanks. Because of you I am already shopping for one.
Just found you and so glad I did...I"ll probably never own a Deuce but thru you I can imagine I do. You do have some great productions techniques and great all around editing too!

that is a great M35A2 you have BC!!!!!! sounds like she's dependable and a good truck to use for pulling/hauling, going off-road, and you don't have to worry about it going underwater just if you keep the air breather and exhaust out of the water, you're fine. I've been wanting to get one like yours since I was 8 years old, now I'm 16 and I know how to drive a stick and how to operate one now. thanks for the videos and tips on how to buy and what to look/expect on a M35A2. Mike
It is basically a regular sized semi but a little heavier. All old semis are load and you should ALWAY ALWAYS have a tool set in everything. like my dad said 45 mph up a hill, down a hill, loaded or unloaded always 45mph..
Been thinking about picking one up for a while, and have to change a few things so now I cant lol. I am working on a M-715. Love the rope, you should try to find a boat anchor! lol
Great truck! I have a '71 M817 5-ton truck. Love beating around in her.... One thing that you haven't talked about is the fact that these trucks all have their own souls... For instance, my truck can be a fussy woman at times. I have to treat her right for her to treat me right. She doesn't take well to being beaten on. These trucks were meant to do one job and do it well. That job is go anywhere and haul a lot. Keep that in mind and they will treat you right!
A volunteer fire department I was once a member of, had a Korean war vintage deuce. It was a 6 cylinder gas engine and I believe a 4-speed transmission. 45 mph, wide-open, with your foot on the floor. I never saw anything that it couldn't pull.
HEY I just discovered your channel and have enjoyed watching your deuce videos. I would like to see a video about the maintenance and operational costs associated with owning one.
Thanks! I kind of thought maybe a local agent would be my best bet. I have a few cars and trucks from the 50s to 70s and it has always been kind of a struggle to get them properly covered on my Geico policy as daily drivers. Pretty sure they will draw the line on a deuce. :) Glad to hear it can still be done through the old fashioned local guys though.
It's a wonderful vehicle and I've got enormous respect for it after seeing William Friedkin's film Sorcerer last year. Looks very sturdy. I respect muscular trucks.
My grandpa used to talk about them a lot, yes I want one. Quick story: in Korea he was tired of waiting on a bus so he put the deuce in 1st eased up on the bus and gently lol pushed the bus up the hill and out of his way putting in 1st al the way. Probably the most extreme thing he did. Said he had a few and he wasn’t a drinker. Probably the most exciting time of his life.
Hey man, could you put up some more of these videos? I'm looking into getting one and i would like to see more about it like a walk around, look at the bed, engine, cab, ect. I'm planning on getting one next year and want to know what i'm getting myself into
2:59 - It mainly depends on the gvwr or "Gross Vehicle Weight Rating." And the GCWR or "Gross Combined Weight Rating" applies as well. So 13.5k or 6.75 tons. It's hard to explain exactly the details but the jist of it is: wouldn't hurt to have a Class A CDL anyway just in case. BUT do bear in mind if you get a ticket for a traffic violation (i.e., speeding, etc.) what can be a normally 150 dollar ticket will turn to a 1500 dollar ticket. That's because as a professional driver (assuming you have your Class A CDL,) you are held to a higher standard and it takes a lot of skill and patience to drive a big truck. Food for thought. Professionally speaking, I'd say a Class B with some endorsements at best but I'd recommend just getting a Class A CDL. NOTE: nowadays when you get your Class A CDL, be careful because if you are trained to drive in a vehicle that has an AMT (Automated Manual Transmission) like in the common freightliners, peterbilts and Kenworths. (etc, etc.) you will have a transmission restriction. If you are to drive a truck with a manual transmission, even if you already know how to drive a manual transmission and have a valid Class A CDL, you'll still be fined for it for lack of proper endorsements. Just a friendly suggestion is all. And, also bear in mind that there are certain width restrictions for vehicles. I'm not sure if that truck alone is road legal merely by width alone. So be careful, every state is different.
I agree at 60 MPH you would think you are doing about 120 MPH. They will get stuck, but the winch will pull it right out if you have something to hook to. If you have a pipe line truck or a V-17 they have a rear winch with a extra long cable and with enough snatch blocks you can pull anything out of the mud if you have something to hook to. Also if you drive off with the front winch on, it will bend in your front bumper. Don't ask how I know this lol. And yeah my HOA would have a fit with this.
I've been dreaming of having one of these since college. I used to see them at a local feed store (JAX) for a few thousand. Now they're up and over $10k. My last two vehicles have been a Jeep Wrangler and Toyota Tundra, so I'm no stranger to gas mileage under 15 MPG, but man... not sure I can deal with 45 MPH max. It would take me forever to get around in Colorado. Thanks for the video.
I would love to have one of these for camping in the boonies. I'd put an old camper on the bed and my wife, a professional wildlife photographer, would have some creature comforts.
Another lil note here, the Brakes can stick to the drums after sitting a long time, you can destroy the Trans and or T case by dumping power on it. If she dont want to move get a hammer , Sledge hammer and wack the wheels and or drums to get them loose. This takes place more then you know!
I had insurance for liability, 100 per year with state farm. Mileage was 9mpg on 2.5 tons and the 5 tons I owned were 6mpg. No problem parking in my drive way. No neighbor commplaints. Mine was not nearly that wide. No problem getting license if it was a private vehicle. I did register mine as farm truck since I have farm land, but truck is never there, its in city. I take no tools but some chain to pull others if needed
if i remember correctly an endorsement is req in cal becuase it has air brakes (i know thier air over hyd but tech thier air brakes in cal) so u need an air brake endorsement here even if its below the weight limit for non cdl
I had the honor of driving both the m35 and the m813 back in the marine corps, back in the late 70's. They had some power, granted my m561 gama goat was faster top end on okinawa , but the my favorite was my m813 5 ton
Well, I have watched all the series so far. And I must say: I still desire to own a M35a2 or M35a3. Though I am rather wary of purchasing from online, I am curious as to whether you "endorse" any particular site that purloins to Deuce 1/2 owners (and that may sell the aforementioned)
some info not correct here. Ive had 5 of them. Never paid over 3800 with winch, cargo bed. 9mpg. And I can park in driveway, No problem. My neighbors don't give a hoot.
@bill45colt just because you got yours for that price doesn't mean everyone else will. As the availability drops off prices will rise. That's just basic economics.
I am sold! I am saving to buy me a Deuce, here in Texas they average $5,000 to $7,000 wit ha few going as high as $10,000 plus. I have a few questions that I will be asking later as I watch your videos again.
i drove one these in the Army for my first 2 years. Had one completely off the ground out in the California desert once. Logged a lot of miles in these good 'ol trucks. They're fun to drive but watch letting the steering wheel spin freely straightening out after a turn, it will break fingers or take a thumbnail clean off!
I would recomend that for short trips you take a 3/4 drive impanct gun, a lug nut socket, 3/4 drive exction, and a bottle jack just in case you need to change a tire. I have changed tires with hand tools it sucks. The impact gun is the only way to go.
is it bad that mine cranks for about 4 seconds before it fires? I see alot of this that just start right instantly..... Mine runs great and starts everytime... new batteries. Makes me worried if maybe the rings could be loose? or am i just making a big deal out of nothing haha? thanks! keep the vids coming!
Ha! I don't think anyone would let me on their track but I could probably mark off a straight stretch of road somewhere. It's not like I'll be able to go over the speed limit.
Purchasing a M923a1 from a local collector. The M923a1 is automatic , I like that. Is there anything that I should know for this truck? This truck does not have the ctis. The truck has dual lays, not super singles. Any info would help. Thanks Ed. J
We used to make garbage runs. Want to unload quick? Lower the tailgate. Get going in reverse as fast as possible and then slam on the brakes. Voila'! Job done. Got a great kick out of it! Oh,man! they were a lot of fun
i want to get one of these beasts after i get into the Marine reserves! this is a dumb question/statement, but i bet it terrible fueling these things! awesome video btw!
@ 1:07 "its been outside for 3 days" ......... @ 1:12 "it hasnt been started in about 3 months"...so you towed it out of a garage, into the spot it has been parked at for 3 days? oooooooooooooook.
ive subbed and gave a like cause of the way u opened this. that was perfect. i need to get me one of these whats different between this and the 5 tons?
Nice vid! I like the M9xxA2 that have the super singles & automatic. They do 55-60 mph with 1800 rpm. Although the sounds of that whistler engine is the best!
I have the M923A2 , and yes it'll do those speeds , but you better be careful about it. That extra power is for pulling twice the weight of the Deuce , not to go any faster.
No Quarter Compound I think the top speed is around 70-75 mph depending on where you set the governor. But yea the tires are rated for 55mph and I think it's best not to exceed that. I have blown a tire at 50 mph but it was probably just the age of the tire.
I don't know if anyone else has asked this question yet, but how did you get insurance for yours? I've wanted one for a while but I have heard that getting insurance is a pain.
Sorry, but we don't get that here in Tennessee. The truck is capable of it though as these engines were/are run in Alaska with nothing more than an arctic kit added.
I'm an old soldier from the 70's. Retired in 2007. I loved the M35 Deuce. It was the workhorse of the Army. Hooah!! US Army Retired Iraq Vet.
Confed Vet I wonder what kind of chick magnet that it whould be

Yeah, they are absolutely awful vehicles.
I would mode mine with a nerf minigun with at least 150 fps and shoot my friends
but all that lack of electronics and simplicity makes them cheap and extremely reliable
Actually the feul mileage is not that bad. It's just got a big tank.
@@spec-opsmexican4119 lol
We had a few of those on the farm. Has the turn radius of a 747 on a landing approach.
Driving it around town I've become the master of the 28 point U-turn.

It's funny that you mention the thirsty/dehydrated feeling. I get the same in my Humvee. So weird!

Hearing protection while driving around town? That makes driving with a cell phone seem safer than seat belts...
I never got out of the truck, they just hooked it up and said I was good to go. you should make a video about the tool rack above the spare tire
Between this and a 1970s R model Mack truck..its hard to choose as they are both rugged and do the work!
4:33-Sugar Ray Leonard on GMA interview: I not only wear my seat belt when I am driving my Jeep, but also when I am driving my Mercedes Benz.
Plus they're so enjoyable to travel in back of, in the winter, in Germany.
Great videos. And very helpful information
if i remember correctly an endorsement is req in cal becuase it has air brakes (i know thier air over hyd but tech thier air brakes in cal) so u need an air brake endorsement here even if its below the weight limit for non cdl
Are they a extreme battle driving? (steering wise) Cause I'm thinking of one on the farm for transporting products.
As a truck driver, 99% of the time, my max height is 13' and wondered how tall these trucks are. Thanks for the video.
Stock total height is 9'4"
I had the honor of driving both the m35 and the m813 back in the marine corps, back in the late 70's. They had some power, granted my m561 gama goat was faster top end on okinawa , but the my favorite was my m813 5 ton
You were going to show us what to take on a long trip then you gassed it up and the video ended. What do you take with you on a long trip?
Well, I have watched all the series so far.
And I must say: I still desire to own a M35a2 or M35a3.
Though I am rather wary of purchasing from online, I am curious as to whether you "endorse" any particular site that purloins to Deuce 1/2 owners (and that may sell the aforementioned)
The ones I used in the motor pool would do 55 tops... wonder what the diforance was... What state ya in?
Thanks! Great Vids. Do you fix them yourself? Where do you get the spare parts for those Caterpillar Diesel Engines?
some info not correct here. Ive had 5 of them. Never paid over 3800 with winch, cargo bed. 9mpg. And I can park in driveway, No problem. My neighbors don't give a hoot.
bill45colt that’s not incorrect info..
@bill45colt just because you got yours for that price doesn't mean everyone else will. As the availability drops off prices will rise. That's just basic economics.
The most undependable thing on an A-2 was the hydro-vac that operated the air over hydraulic brakes.
So that high gear is up against the dash, it gets quite crowded with 2 passengers and their gear.
Very informational brother!!! God bless America:)
Jimbo Jerry it’s from Canada
Most awesome Intro music ever!!
I drove one once to go get pizza...... almost got in 3 accidents.
that is so weird! Any idea why the 3-4 is like that?
is it bad that mine cranks for about 4 seconds before it fires? I see alot of this that just start right instantly..... Mine runs great and starts everytime... new batteries. Makes me worried if maybe the rings could be loose? or am i just making a big deal out of nothing haha? thanks! keep the vids coming!
You can register them I have mine registered. But you do have to take off an axle
subscribed. I absolutely want to own one of these things. thank you for making this video
Cool truck!
It sure would be funny to see this on a 1/4mi. drag strip, wonder what it's time would be?
Ha! I don't think anyone would let me on their track but I could probably mark off a straight stretch of road somewhere. It's not like I'll be able to go over the speed limit.
Just to see the expressions on the faces would be priceless! Great series, new subscriber!
Thanks buddy! FYI after the holidays I'll have time for more Deuce videos. Had to take a hiatus from the farm due to work and family obligations.
Purchasing a M923a1 from a local collector. The M923a1 is automatic , I like that. Is there anything that I should know for this truck? This truck does not have the ctis. The truck has dual lays, not super singles. Any info would help. Thanks Ed. J
I noticed you clutch for every gear. I thought you had to float every gear after 1st on these big rigs. please shine some light on that. thanks.
Wow, this is really cool. What do you use it for?
How similar is one of these to a Canadian MLVW? They might be the same vehicle for all I know but with military vehicles it can be hard to tell.
I do own not 1 but 3 a M35A2 M756A2 M34 it is a class b in ca weight is 13,030 wo/w air is at rear of truck too. I also have a 5 ton M818.
We used to make garbage runs. Want to unload quick? Lower the tailgate. Get going in reverse as fast as possible and then slam on the brakes. Voila'! Job done. Got a great kick out of it! Oh,man! they were a lot of fun
Isn't the braking system air over hydraulic? I thought that was illegal except for military use. I might be wrong...
i want to get one of these beasts after i get into the Marine reserves! this is a dumb question/statement, but i bet it terrible fueling these things! awesome video btw!
Nice, what's the destruction radius like?
CyclonicTuna023 7.5 miles
yes you can i was an 88-mike[army truck driver] for 15 years you can speed shift a duece but it takes practice
38 degrees cold weather start lol try 10-15 below in a MN winter that is a cold weather start
Sorry, but we don't get that here in Tennessee. The truck is capable of it though as these engines were/are run in Alaska with nothing more than an arctic kit added.
