How About ?
“How about?” is used to suggest an action and to “open” different possibilities:
Example : How about a vacation to Singapore?
Example : How about applying for that job at the bank?
What About?
“What about?” is used to mention an objection or a potential problem:
Example : What about my English class that falls on the same time?
Example : What about your dog?
There are cases wherein ‘What about?’ & ‘How about?’ can be used interchangeably, that’s when you are asking about what someone is doing or feeling.
Example :
“How have you been?”
“Good - a little busy with school. How about you?”
“Where do you work?”
“At the local university. What about you?”
In this case, How about you? and What about you? are asking the same question back to the other person.
Both can be used interchangeably. You can see a good dictionary such as Cambridge Dictionary and Collins.. they tell us how about and what about are used for making suggestions and recommendations.
You are so smart to teach about these lesson, and i like your way to explain English lesson. You aretrully brilliant English teacher
A very good explanation! Congratulations!
It came in handy! Thank you for pointing out the difference just be aware when using "advice" because It's a non countable noun so we cannot say "an advice" that's a mistake! We can say a "piece of advice"

What about these definitions?
This one is from the Oxford Learners Dictionary: www.oxfordlearnersdictionaries.com/definition/english/about_1#about_idmg_2
- how/what about…?
= used to make a suggestion
How about going for a walk?
(especially North American English) How about we go for a walk?
What about a break?
I found the same on Merriam Webster's dictionary: www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/what%20about
And on The Free Dictionary by Farlex: idioms.thefreedictionary.com/how%2fwhat+about...%3f
Hi Ceema,
is How about/What about possible here: ´ And what about your kitchen?´ or ´And how about your kitchen? ´ (in this context you remembered your friend is renovating his kitchen and you want to know how far the renovation is)

I'm confused O_o. Hewings Martin "Advanced Grammar In Use" suggests that we use this interchangeably: How / What (about):
- How / What about a swim? (making a suggestion)
- He’s a bit scary sometimes. How / What do you mean ?’ (asking for more information)

What about verb in last two sentences, "what/how about you?"
Owo! Perfect! I loved
How about taking a short vacation to the Hawaii? (x)
How about taking a short vacation to Hawaii? (o)
How about taking a short vacation to the Hawaiian Islands? (o)
I was going to make the same comment
What about a long vacation?
In your sentence "How about a short vacation to the Hawaii?" I think the article "the" shouldn't be there. --- "How about a short vacation to Hawaii?"
But OALD listed both as one and the same entry. I am confused. Could you cite the source of the usages alleged in this video?
:) could you tell us more examples ???
It' s very usefull, thanks a lot. But I was looking the answer to How are you?...Very well, thanks..WHAT ABOUT YOU?..
SO is the same: "Very well, AND YOU?...
Well I think is the same...but I thought that the best answer was FINE not Very well....oh my god back to the basics needs a lot of patience...😢😊
Hi. What about is the saem at AND NOW? Ex: What about now = and now?
Pretty interesting. I know in the USA people always use the two interchangeably. Good video but be careful with your article usage. You made a small mistake. You shouldn't say "The Hawaii". It should just be 'Hawaii'.
But in india we say the Hawaii
So no matter about use
Don't worry its common
I have recently studied that when brits refer to a country they don't use THE article. I mean "I visited the Germany two years ago" is wrong.
But...there are three special cases you need to use THE:
1) for countries which names are longer than two words (i.e. the United States of America);
2) for countries which names start with 'United' (i.e. the United Kingdom);
3) for countries which consist of SMALL islands (i.e. the West Indies).
So, by applying the 3rd rule, we can say "I visited the Hawaii two years ago".
Thank YOU all, for your answers and questions. I learn a lot from them.
mam why we cant use helping verb with this expression? how about applying for a job at bank? in this sentnce where is helping verb because applying is a gerund.
Hi ma'am can we use THE before Hawaii because as far as I know howaii is a place and as per my knowledge we do not use The before general places.
You are correct. We can't say "THE Hawaii". You can only use "the" if you say "the Hawaiian Islands".

Good evening ma'am Please ma'am tell us from Hindi because how can we learn English from English?
🎉
What is the difference between HOW ABOUT NOW? and WHAT ABOUT NOW?
How about dinner?
What about my English class which falls on the same time ?
Okay but, what if someone suggests going to Hawaii as an objection? Like if a family wanted to go to Hawaii but decides to go to Alaska instead then one of the children could say "What about Hawaii?" What happened to that? Why not Hawaii? Etc.
I agree that maybe those implied questions are more appropriate and better English, but when faced with the situation, children and English speakers in general, it barely even matters as long as they get their point across. I guess it's just another one of those instances where there's complex, proper, written English compared to simpler, informal, spoken English. And like you/she said, most speakers believe it's interchangeable anyways, so no one really will notice or care enough unless they are your English College Professor or something.
Why how about with ING? can u tell me please?
Please. What about now? and How about now? have the same meaning?
