How to care for Colocasia (Taro) plants in winter

  • Colocasia plants are loved for their large tropical leaves and tropical appearance. Commonly called ‘Elephant Ear Plant’ or ‘Taro’, Colocasias thrive in the heat of summers but need additional care when grown in parts of the world with cold winters.
Overwintering Colocasias is an easy process, no matter which species or cultivar you grow. This method over overwintering colocasia has been successful for ‘Blue Hawaii’, ‘Redepmtion’, ‘Pharaohs Mask’, ‘Black Coral’ and so many other Colocasias I grow.
To prepare Colocasia plants for winter storage I first remove old wet soil from around the roots. This gives me a chance to check for any signs of rot in the Colocasia roots and corm. I can also check for pests and disease more easily.
I then pot the Colocasia plant up into a dry potting mix for winter storage. I like to use a well drained mix of compost and perlite for my Colocasia plants as this helps to prevent the soil becoming waterlogged. Cut back any old foliage as this will likely rot over the winter period.
I keep my Colocasia plants above 5°C/43°F to prevent any cold damage from ice in winter. A heated greenhouse, heated propagator or warm shed or garage are ideal places to store Colocasia over winter.
Water overwintering Colocasia plants sparingly, every 5-6 weeks just to keep the soil moist to prevent the plant from drying out.

Thank you so much for your video, I've just bought Colocasia Jacks Giant plug plant, as I'm getting into the tropical theme at my allotment.
I think I'll follow your winter care.

For anyone who didn’t know, Taro is a common food in some countries, which means you can usually find them in asian grocery stores. I have had tremendous success with Taro tubers like that, and it’s cheap too!

Also, they are extremely common. So… to reiterate, yes, try to grow what is so common. But, later. Grow to your desires!!!😂

Slowly bringing in my Colocasia. As this is my first year growing them I chose to keep them all inside in pots except for Pink China. I can be less cautious when I have propagated spare plants.

That’s very true, always propagate backup plants when possible. Thanks for watching 😀

Here in NW Florida for colocasias I have in pots I just cut off the tops if we get a frost, leave them in on soil and bring 1:33 them in to sit in garage until March then I bring them back out in the full sun to jump start them. If I had prolonged cold weather like you I think you have a good method. For caladium bulbs I actually take them out of the pots and clean them up and dry out and then store in saw dust till March then pot up again seems to work better than leaving in the pot like colocasias

Hi Craig great video. I bought 2 col mojito bulbs in spring but due to lack of room in the garden i never got round to planting them. Will these grow next year or will they not grow after spending a year in the cupboard?they are dry and still firm.
