Behind the Roll- The people of Critical Role

- Hey!
So became a recent fan of the online show of Critical Role and wanted to learn more about the people who make it happen. I came across the 'Between the Sheets' series and wanted to do a cool spin off of a documentary show!
I do not own the footage shown, but full edit was done by me, created a short film of the amazing people who make me laugh so hard and struck my interest in Dungeons and Dragons! I hope you enjoy and if you want a good laugh and enjoyment of a great story check out their channel @Critical Role !
This edit is based off of pre-recorded content written and produced by Critical Role and Brian W. Foster. This is just for fan made content only.

Matthew Mercer added this to his favorites playlist!
Congratulations! Couldn't think of a more worthy video.
What!? No way! If that is true that is pretty awesome! :D and thanks couldn't have done it with out them :D
@@spellslots That is truly epic, haha thanks for sending that! Though kind of weird right? 😅😂
Brilliant!
“Let’s do it again.”
Travis, CEO, fellow nerd.
Makes me tear up every time : ) but glad they are still going!
And going. WIDE!
M9 animated?
I’m in.
This feels like a professional documentary. Totally encapsulates the magic of the show. Hope more people see it. Great job, dude!!
Thank you! That was my goal! So means a lot that you noticed it :D
A lot of it was pulled from Between the Sheets. You can find the entire interviews elsewhere on UA-cam
@@Shadowmib It was so much to watch : | : ) but so fun learning more about them!
I completely agree
I love that Matt talks about imposter syndrome for those first games but when you go to Sam or Liam, they're both like "What was it about the first game that made it so amazing? Prolly MATT." I think that's pretty dang cool.
totally agree!
I hope someone has gotten this to Foster. This is absolutely a labor of love for everyone, but Foster made many of these sound bites possible.
So true! Couldn't have been able to make it with out him as he is the one who made it all happen :D I have tagged some people but I figure they are busy and unable to watch but maybe one day :D
@@StandProductionshave you heard about the latest regarding Foster? He's fallen from grace in an outstanding manner
@@derAtze I have heard and sad to know that it happened, I will continue to keep this video up so as to not erase something that I worked hard on, but I want to respect the cast as much as possible! so funny enough the second video I made I had to make significant adjustments.
UPDATE POST: First I want to say thank you so freaking much for all the love and support you guys have been giving this video! It was such a long project and so happy I got to make something for fellow Critters!
For the update a big thanks to 'Jeff Lackman' for spotting a slight mistake that didnt translate through right in the credits! I apologize for the miss print, but there will be a blurred section for interview footage call out, as that footage is from "Between the Sheets"!😅
"Thank god this isn't something that going to weigh on my brain."
*cut to me now still waiting for and worrying about Laudna* Yeah, Marisha, I totally get it. 🤣
I had same thought when I was working on this 😂
I get goosebumps every single time I watch that last bit of The Search For Grog. The energy in that room, the energy on the stage, the odds of that happening, the emotions... Crazy.
This was amazingly well done. It's funny, you wouldn't normally think of slapping together a bunch of pre-existing video clips as an artform. But the skill with which you edited them together to tell a cohesive story, with emotion, is something that requires talent, and you pulled it off beautifully. You created art, and you should be proud of that.
Glad you enjoyed it! and thank you! there are some things I noticed but still happy with how it came out! Honestly was a bit nervous posting it : | :D
You captured the emotion and love of one of the great pieces of cooperative story telling in existence. well done my friend.
Thanks! Honestly its thanks to them that they did create such awesome storytelling :D
Okay that opening had me going: "well that's a bit much for a fan edit, a bit pretentious, no?" but holy hell you proved me wrong. What an awesome video! Even though I've seen almost all the clips here, the way you contextualized and strung them together is beautiful. This deserves thousands fold the views it currently has
Haha! I succeed then my friend :D So glad you liked it! and so hard to pick the clips! There were to many to pick from : | : )
what was pretentious about it, im confused why you would think that
@@LordDangles I had the same thought, not that it was pretentious necessarily but that it was a bit much, cause most fan edits are very simple and sometimes even fail to really be anything more than unconnected clips that can be confusing to non-fans. I mean OP and I essentially judged the book by it's cover, but man , was it worth reading/watching. Way to go StandProductions.
This was amazing. I held it together up until the bit where travis was talking about taking risks and then getting that Nat 20 in Search for Grog.
Then Ashely talking about how we are all struggling with our own things and are a little weird, but the table is where we feel most comfortable and it's amazing.
Brilliant editing here and thanks for making it
Thanks so glad you liked it and dont worry your not alone, those sections along with the end got me :D
It’s incredible how low Matt thinks of himself compared to how everyone sees him. But it’s heartwarming. I see him carrying the same anxious energy that so many young teens do, even though he’s such a talented, intellectually gifted master of his craft.
It reminds us to look behind the curtain. Everyone has struggles and doubts.
Agreed it was so interesting learning that about him while watching the interviews :D
Yeah, Matt's struggles break my heart every time he brings them up, because he's genuinely one of the greatest people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing of, and he deserves everything great that comes to him
@@T0NI_ 100% agree!
Love letter to the people at Crit Role:
I've been play D&D since very early 1977. I've played every iteration of the game.
I lived the Satanic Panic of the 80s. I hid my participation in the game because if it from anyone who didn't already play out of fear of any number of labelings and accusations being sling about.
Though CR isn't the only streamed game, it is by far the most popular and... has gone the furthest in the game's large scale demystification and popularization.
For that I thank you. I am vindicated after feeling such an outsider for so long.
Thats awesome! and its thanks to them I found an interest for D&D, though sadly dont know where to start playing myself, they have opened up a really cool creative way!
As an old school '79 D&D nerd I am both in love and envious of CR. After years of Legos for dungeons and trying to make sound tracks on cassettes I so appreciate what they have had the opportunity to create.
I swear Matt is my little brother from another mother. The world, the voices and character, and the story development...superb.
Thank you for making this video.
@@soeffner6833 so true! They do a great job creating the story and so lucky to have the pieces to make it even better!
Recently I've been kind of exhausted with the amount of (very good) dnd content there is on youtube (cause I've started to peek into other shows) and I kinda wasn't as motivated to watch CR as I was a year ago, but you really reminded me of why I love these specific people so much!
Thank you for this amazing edit, and I hope we all get to continue to tell the stories we love
Thanks! And I agree, I was watching Campaign 2 and loved it so much it was hard to move on and watch a new one, but as I kept watching more videos it wasnt so much the characters but the people behind the characters that I enjoy :D
This edit feels like it could be official! Great work!
That means a lot! thanks : )
I thought its official, because it was embedded and I did not watch on youtube :D But Brian in it got me confused - that was a sign it is not official.
@@dirkboch128 Haha thanks! I really tried to make it professional as possible! 😆
Other than being phenomenal actors and players, what I love so much about watching these people roll dice together is the genuine love and friendship they have. It's truly a beautiful thing and in my eyes is part of what makes Critical Role so beloved by so many. This was such a great video. It honestly felt like a professional documentary you'd expect to find on their website. Bravo! 👏 👏
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it and I agree! Watching through all the interviews I could see their friendship with each other and i wanted to make sure that came through!
This sir is a masterpiece. I love the concept of telling your own story from the story of others. To create your own meaning from meanings that others have decided to give to something
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it :D Was fun to make!
This was an absolute delight and seems completely official with how professionally done it is.
Definitely teared up a bit because of how you paired the Between the Sheets interviews with clips/moments from the campaigns. Excellent, excellent video. I hope it continues to reach all the Critters out there. 😊
Thank you and ya I did too a bit on a few moments : )
absolutely amazing amazing work man. an incredible watch.
Thanks a ton! Glad you liked it!
@@StandProductions I was one of the first 1000 (give or take) people to view this and I wear that badge with pride. Revisiting this video has been so special to me has I’ve watched more and more of the campaigns, it’s incredible how attached in tune you can feel with a group of strangers, and your video strengthening that bond is no small feet. Once again, thank you for your incredible work.
@@therealriles7045 Thank you so much and Im slightly honored you said that! Iv been going through a rough patch and this made my day :) And so true it feels like you know a part of them and I wanted to make sure others saw them the way I do!
Part improv comedy troupe, part actors studio, part group therapy session, and part friends night in. But are they not entertaining! Critical Role forever. 💙
so true!
Amazing Edit!❤
Thanks 🔥
This was insanely well made, a beautiful little time capsule of CR memories. Thank you so so much for putting this together and I hope we see more from you soon! Welcome to the Critical Role community fellow critter! ❤
Glad you enjoyed it! And have a few ideas im thinking through so we will see if it works out :D
Amazing! Thank you so much for doing this!!!
No problem was really fun making!
you're a brilliant editor and this is an absolute gem, thank you for this I'm smiling so much
Thanks that means a ton, but so glad you enjoyed it and that was my ultimate goal!
I still remember googling “D&D campaign with actors” at work years ago and coming across Critical Role. What a journey with these people… the live shows, between the sheets… kickstarter… then the explosion of shows… good times. Thank you again.
I know right, and I came in a bit late :D
Excellent piece. Great editing
Thank you very much!
This was made and cut so well. Thank you for this video!
Glad you enjoyed it! and thank you for watching!
This is very well done! Very good job.
I wish I could like this 1000 times. Such a joy to watch. Very well done! Thank you!
Its ok! Just your comment showed your love of it :D Thanks for watching!
Monique got me crying in the dnd club rn lmao
that transition from Travis talking about how playing it safe is ~lame~ to "reckless"?! omfg amazing!! incredible!! the whole video is but that moment?? taking the (arguably, but i will die on this hill) best CR moment ever captured and utilizing it to hammer in the nail of 'why is this content so captivating to watch'; that which makes Critical Role and these nerdy ass voice actors the powerhouse that it is?? i absolutely cannot chef's kiss enough. thank you, Monique! this video is beautiful and you can clearly see all the hard work and thoughtfulness that when into it!
Haha thanks so glad you liked it! And that is personally my favorite part as well, and found the perfect music track to go under it :) I wanted to give this group the justice it deserves since they make me laugh so much! And cant thank the critter community enough for all the love you guys have been showing this project!
This made me very happy to watch, well done!
That was my goal!
Such a great video! Thank you for making this
Glad you enjoyed it!
As a new critter for C3 who has only seen a small bit of prior content and interviews this was fantastic.
What campaign and episode was that tearful moment in the end from? I watched the last part of The Search For Grog for that last crazy moment because someone said it in another comment and was nice to catch that moment.
Thank you for putting it together and sharing. The narrative you were about to tell with existing material was inspiring and emotional.
Hey so glad you enjoyed it and definitely great moment for the search for grog :D for the last clip after Matt speaks? that's the last episode of campaign 2! such a good one! and no problem thanks for watching it!
Amazingly done!
Very well done, enjoyed every second of it!
Glad to hear it my friend!
What an incredible montage. Well done, well done and I thank you.
Thank you very much! Was fun to make! :)
Thanks so much more making this - I didn't know how much I needed to watch this until I did, thankyou.
Happy to hear you enjoyed it :D
This is a beautiful video, you captured the essence of what I love about Critical Role and these amazing people
Glad you enjoyed it! and same here :)
What an excellent edit.
Well done.
Thank you very much!
Btw, this is amazing and I'm sending it to my friends who bust my stones about watching CR and telling them to watch it. If this doesn't get the point across, I don't know what will.
hope it works out! Truly best show to watch, they are missing out!
Amazing stuff. Sums up a lot of the reasons why you, I and millions of others love this show and these people
so true!
I was just gonna skim through this pretty fast, but got hooked on what you put together. This is really good. It really captures the people and the characters in the show. This was clearly a well thought out story. It felt like I was on a journey through this tale. I'd say this would be a really good primer for anyone wanting to know about Critical Role, from the inception to modern day. I think you capture the gist of the soul of the show. Great Job!!
So happy you enjoyed it! And glad the story came through well! I kind of wanted a video like this when I started watching them :)
Every damned time I watch this I tear up. Thank you so much for this wonderful project of love.
Thanks for watching!
Nice editing. This really warmed my heart. As a new critter just joining and hearing this lovely cut of all these stories, thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it! and the true reason why I made it is for the new people who want to know more :)
I love this
These crazy assholes changed my life for the better. They brought me out of the darkest period of my life and gave me something to look forward to every week and made so many of us feel like we were apart of their friendship
I don't always watch youtube videos longer than 10 minutes, but when I do, they are *damn well worth the watch* and omg this was one of the best "clipumentaries" (if that's not a word, it is now), I have ever had the pleasure of watching. Thank you for this
Haha best word for it! So glad you enjoyed it!
Amazing! I laughed ...shed a few tears of reminiscence..snotted on myself while watching this....thank you critical role for all the wonderful memories ❤️ ♥️
Glad you enjoyed it! and sorry for the emotional roller coaster : D
Wonderful! It struck home so much. Yes, I knew all those clips, but this compilation brought about the essence of why I stick with it every week & laugh & cry & have a fun time with occasional food for thought.
Thank you! Really.
And thanks to cast & crew of Critical Role.
Glad you enjoyed it! I think it verged a bit on nostalgia, which is odd as I came into the community not to long ago! So it must be bigger impact for someone who has watched longer :)
thank you, this brought me to tears. I love the CR cast, and their connection is something I dearly hope I can achieve with friends in my lifetime. Hearing them talk about how they came together gives me hope.
So true! a pure friendship that I hope lasts a long time :)
What a beautiful edit. Thank you for this. Sending critter hugs :)
Thank you so much!

Amazing narrative work, excellent pacing and an absolute success on encapsulating the feelings of this show in a reasonably short video. What a rollercoaster!

Thanks! Im glad you enjoyed it :)
This was great !! Thank you
You're so welcome! I made it for all Critters : )
This show and the community around it is just a gift that keeps giving. I recently started binging S2 and this just tugged at my heartstrings! I love watching these goofballs and seeing others enjoy themselves too!
On a sidenote: The video is very well made, you can certainly tell how much effort you put into it! Love it!
Couldn't agree more! and thank you :)
Amazing job, this was very well done.. i am just now getting caught up after having started binging from S1/E1, finally up to S3/E29. Just a few more to go before i have to wait a week at a time to see my new crack.
wow that is impressive! and thanks glad you enjoyed it!
You did a great job capturing all of the best of my favorite crew! Kudos to you! Also, I miss Talks Machina and Between the Sheets so much!!!

Aw, this actually made me tear up. Such an amazing story told so well. Thank you for sharing!
So, I wrote this comment within the first five minutes, and now that I am at the end....I AM STILL CRYING A LOT. Gosh I love these guys.
haha sorry but glad you enjoyed it :D what was a favorite part that you enjoyed?
I am long time critter and this video is really at the great level that critical role members deserve. Thank You very much!
Glad you enjoyed it! It means a lot to hear that from someone who has been with them longer than I have :D
I do not know how I did not see this pop up 4 months ago. This is a FABULOUS compendium and introspective look in one setting this group of "nerdy voice actors". Really, they represent all of us gawky kids (at every point of our lives) who let their masks down, show their enthusiasm and cheer at the sight of dice rolling across the table. Beautiful, just beautiful work!! Bravo. Bravo!
Glad it finally popped up for you! and I couldn't have made it with out them! It was fun learning about them and then piecing a story I wanted to see together :)
This is great! Well done!
Thanks!
Beau-tifally made. What an amazing experience you have brought to us. Thank you so much for this!
Glad you enjoyed it! and great pun there 😂
This was awesome. Thank you for putting it together. Sad that Brian's not involved with Crit Role anymore. He had such a quirky energy.
