- Kotaro tries to wake me up in six unique ways. Normally, my otters call out to me as soon as they wake up, so I usually get up right away. But today, I decided to observe what he does when I don't wake up as quickly.

【About Asian Small-clawed Otters】
First, otters are different from sea otters.
Sea otters spend most of their time in the water, but otters can live both on the ground and in water.
A few years ago, trafficking otters became a serious problem, and in 2019, CITES (Washington Convention) increased the classification of otters from CITESⅡ to CITES I, which banned international trade.
Having an otter as a pet is illegal in most countries. However, in Japan, otters can be traded, although it is limited to domestic breeds only.
Currently, severe restrictions are in place for buying and selling otters in Japan. For example, microchips need to be inserted in both babies and parents, and owners need a special permit. Circumstances of birth must also be reported in detail.
As a result, there is currently no buying and selling of baby otters in the market. There is a severe penalty for selling and buying otters with unknown birth origins without permits. This was effective in eliminating trafficking, and we don’t see otter trafficking on the news anymore.
Kotaro and Hana were both born in Japan and have permits.
It is so much work to have an otter as a pet. You need to be ready for more than its cuteness. They are loud, and they sometimes bite you. Food and water get very expensive, and you cannot keep otters in cages because they are active. Also, we never leave them at home. We always look after them closely like we do with human children, and our top priority is always them.
If you want to have an otter as a pet, you must be able to follow the law and devote your life to it. If you don’t have that resolve, you should never have one as a pet.

The subtitles are done by Risu English Online as listed in the description. They must have native English Speakers translate the dialogue because although they do capture the meaning and spirit (clever humor) of the Japanese remarks, they are often not direct translations and they are too colloquial and full of American slang to be written by the average Japanese vlogger. Just compare the limited English translations of the Loutre channel with very basic errors like saying "baby" instead of "babies" or "He tired."

I’ve always assumed that the translations were being done by someone or a team of professional translators.
It takes more than just being fluent in both Japanese and English to do the kind of translations that we are seeing in this channel. One would have to be able to think in both Japanese and English (in the case of this channel, think in American English) as well.
Very original method to wake up Dad...made only by Kotaro...so should be reserved only for such amazing creatures as the unique otter...Proffesor Kotaro...and his surprised face when Dad don' t want wake up

My little grey kitty, whom I rescued from the winter ice after his previous humans had abandoned him, wakes me in a similar manner. His fur looks like otter fur, actually, it's the same color grey and is very short and silky. Named January
( because I adopted him on New Years Day 2018 ) he is up and at 'em when the birds start chirping. In summertime, that means at about 5 AM. He climbs all over me and pushes his nose into my nose, purring loudly. Such a sweetie pie! Much love to you and yours.

They are so like little human children! And for the first time, I noticed the tiny claws on their chubby, sensitive fingers.
I love the sticky fingers routine! We had a pet raccoon for a winter when I was a teen, and he would obviously prefer getting things wet when he wanted to explore them with his hands. It's said that this is because raccoons like to 'wash' their food before eating it, but he didn't just do it with food. I read somewhere else that it may make their fingers more sensitive. I do know that both raccoons and otters have dedicated parts of their brains for each finger, just like humans do.

Very entertaining video. Wow! Kotaro is very persistent in trying to get dad or mom out of bed. He has a whole sequence of strategies! K & H must be hungry or want to play with mom or dad. Well, Hana is always hungry! I didn't know that Kotaro's paws smell like popcorn when he licks them. Maybe that's why he likes smelling his paws so much!

I didn’t have otters waking me up. I had a persistent Chinese Shar Pei who would jump up on the bed and come right up to my face and breathe into it and paw at my arm to make sure I woke up to take him out. He lived to be 16.5 years old and I miss him so much. He was better than an alarm clock. 😊

Такого даже мой Пуш не позволял-ну,подумаешь,раза два проносился по моему сонному лицу в 5 утра... С другой стороны,ведь малыш добился того,что им с Ханой нужно,а в достижении цели все средства хороши! Здоровья малышам и их маме и папе!
