【About Asian Small-clawed Otters】
First, otters are different from sea otters.
Sea otters spend most of their time in the water, but otters can live both on the ground and in water.
A few years ago, trafficking otters became a serious problem, and in 2019, CITES (Washington Convention) increased the classification of otters from CITESⅡ to CITES I, which banned international trade.
Having an otter as a pet is illegal in most countries. However, in Japan, otters can be traded, although it is limited to domestic breeds only.
Currently, severe restrictions are in place for buying and selling otters in Japan. For example, microchips need to be inserted in both babies and parents, and owners need a special permit. Circumstances of birth must also be reported in detail.
As a result, there is currently no buying and selling of baby otters in the market. There is a severe penalty for selling and buying otters with unknown birth origins without permits. This was effective in eliminating trafficking, and we don’t see otter trafficking on the news anymore.
Kotaro and Hana were both born in Japan and have permits.
It is so much work to have an otter as a pet. You need to be ready for more than its cuteness. They are loud, and they sometimes bite you. Food and water get very expensive, and you cannot keep otters in cages because they are active. Also, we never leave them at home. We always look after them closely like we do with human children, and our top priority is always them.
If you want to have an otter as a pet, you must be able to follow the law and devote your life to it. If you don’t have that resolve, you should never have one as a pet.

@@LightBrand Yea its so sad breaks my heart. He such a sweet and gentle soul and everybody is taking advantage of it even if there is no need to be harsh towards him because he would never harm anybody.
Kotaro was very curious about Odashi. He is so cute running to and away from her. Hana is the otter boss and she knows it! Acceptance of new otters in their secure, happy home just takes time and patience. It’s difficult when everyone lives far away from each other. Lots of otter personalities today. Fun! 💛🦦🦦💛💛
Hana is actually very timid. Her aggression displays are usually fear responses. Usually. Sometimes she's a mood. During Hana's 2nd on-camera meeting with Ui as they cursed each other out, Ui got very close to Hana twice and both times Hana backed off, not wanting a fight. Chonk Princess talks a big game but doesn't back it up except with the guys (Komugi, Kotaro, Aty). Odashi clearly wanted to be friends with Hana but Hana wasn't having it.
I kinda knew that was why. I only wanted her to be the princess boss. She is my backpack princess and I adore the little fluffy! It’s good Ui and Hana accept each other. I hope one day Hana will accept Odashi too! Or even the funny year olds💛🦦💛

I love the way Odashi does her little hops in the cage it was so cute 😍 💕.
I also liked when she was scratching on the glass door and Kotsume father inside was making a nice game out of it with his fingers... I think that was really nice of him.
It did seem to let her know all was going to be okay.

As otters pair up, the need to establish their own territory gets stronger, so it can pose a problem for collaborations. It might be easier taking them all to neutral ground.

Doesn't look like it's possible to have more than one female otter in a group hangout for otters. You pretty much have to keep it to one female otter cause it seems like it's just their instinct and something you can't really untrain.

If this were a soap opera Kotaro and Hana would be the couple in an arranged marriage reluctantly hanging out with future in laws who are in a loving relationship, Komugi and Odashi. Hana gets grumpy because her brother is very loving towards Odashi (a tough girl from a humble background who won't put up with her princess complex), while she's stuck with Kotaro a famous professor who is indifferent to her feelings (even when she's hopelessly infatuated with him).

I'm not a big fan of animal cafes. They are stuck in a cafe all day waiting for others to interact with them. At least with a zoo, there's a much bigger area and way more opportunity for socialization. These cafes have become very popular in Japan.

@@avoboy662 No, Hana and Odashi are female river otters. They are animals and are a bit territorial. Be careful of ascribing human traits to them.
Hana is shy around other otters and hasn't spent much time around others besides Kotaro. It's a learning curve for her, like everything else she's mastered.
It's my first time seeing Komugi act somewhat aggressively, having a girlfriend awakened something in him. He's usually so submissive. It's the females who I've noticed to be more territorial/protective of their partners but Odashi doesn't seemed threatened by Hana.

@@ensnipe2000 It's the nature of small-clawed otters. They are a matriarchal species. Odashi and Otsuyu had their own sister fight after Otsuyu had babies. Their relationships are very complex.
It’s like that in humans too if you think about it women do not want any girl looking at their man and would break girl code and hook up with their friends exes
Lots of womens conflicts are about men
So many of my exes have said they didn’t want me hanging out with any friends that are girls and their reasoning was that they know how girls think and they’re sneaky and would try too steal me
But guys do that too it’s just ppl forget girls do too

Odashi is one of a pair of identical twins who recently had a nasty fight and no longer "speak" to each other

It'll probably end up with just Aty and Kotaru swimming together, Hana close by, Komugi and Odashi not too far off, and Ui either in a cage or meters away from everyone else screaming her head off.

That's a little sad, but on the other hand predictible in some way:
The 'homies' feel, that it is an unexpected and unpleasant invasion of their territory.
And the "guest-couple" likes to explore everything - but is primarily focussed on each other and a little "threatened-exited" by the resident otters.
Conclusion:
No, they CLEARLY do NOT ENJOY such "surprises"...

It appears that socialising out in nature may be easier as they don't feel like they are being invaded in their homes. Aty, Kotaro, Hana and Komugi sans Ui swam together in the river just fine and they even explored the waterfalls with Ui when she calmed down.
It's interesting. You comment that Hana is really shy. I think except for if it's a garden hose and then she's out for war...
Not really. You can see that Hana is very uncertain abd staying near her dad. She was also backing up at her meeting with Ui, despite her remembering that Ui hit Kotaro. Hana is territorial but not spoiling for a fight. She's not used to being around other otters much or having them in her space.
Wow it takes a while I guess it any species for things to work out better.. good old girlfriend and territory port raises its ugly head
First time we've seen Komugi act like that. It must be harder to do these otter crossovers. At first, Hana and Kotaro were the main couple. Now, Aty and Ui and Komugi and Odashi being couples makes the meetings complicated.
