Subaru Attempts The Old Telegraph Track - Cape York

  • Опубліковано 8 сер 2024
  • The Subaru Offroad Forester has finally completed the Old Telegraph Track, Cape York!
    For a channel first, the track has been made into a short film covering the highs and lows of the entire telegraph track from Bramwell Junction to the tip of Cape York as the Subaru OffRoad Forester battles the track after the wettest April in more than 20 years. Starting the track on the 12th of May 2021, we were one of the first vehicles through the track this dry season.
    Perth to Cape York and back via Alice Springs in the Subaru Forester!
    • 6.5 weeks
    • 13,810km
    • Over 5,000km of dirt roads
    • 1,830L of fuel
    • Solo trip with no assistance from other vehicles
    • Easily more than a km of water crossings
    • Stuck in water with the engine block fully submerged on 4 occasions totalling over 10 minutes
    • Water in the car up to the top of lower seat cushion on the same 4 occasions
    ✅ Old coach road
    ✅ Old Telegraph Track complete - One of the first through for the season the and first to not use chicken tracks on any crossing.
    ✅ First through the CREB track after it was officially opened.
    ❌ Frenchman’s Track not complete, driven both ends to the rivers but depths not passable. The first crossing for the season was only a month later so we can’t feel too bad about this one.
    • One snapped rear CV on old coach road - 15 minutes to replace
    • Old crappy muffler fell apart crossing the Daintree - wired back together for the 6000km return journey and still going strong
    • Wire in the alternator loom snapped - my fault for poor cable routing with insufficient slack - 20 min fix.
    • Bearing under the AC pulley failed from water ingress - No AC for the return trip.
    • Drive by wire throttle body decided to start sticking after the water - some cleaning and lube and she was all good
    • Did a sidewall in cockatoo creek.
    Apart from that she ran like a dream and survived all the abuse we gave her - still running like a dream back in Perth.
    If I were to do the trip again I would probably put some heavier springs in the back but apart from that it was a great setup.
    Already looking forward to heading back one day!

    Certainly one of the best videos I've seen of the Telegraph Track. I'm a retired Cape York tour operator and I enjoy seeing young people challenge themselves and their equipment, you did both in spades. Back in the 1980s two young guys drove the track in a black HQ ute and over many years I've seen quite a variety of vehicles tackle the track but you did it superbly and notably, virtually alone. Wonderful effort and a great video.

I did think it was a little irresponsible doing it alone (assuming you had a sat phone). This aside really enjoyed your video - I have a fleet of those Subaru's and they have never let me down and while I have never pointed them at tracks like you did (usually have a trailer), I have found if you commit and faith they will always bring you home. This is one of the Best videos I've seen in quite awhile. For being almost an hour long it sure did fly by fast. So many suspenseful butt clinching moment's with just the right amount of music.
    Nice to see what being prepared, patient & planning can accomplish. Your Forester has put suv's to shame with how it made it through Everything you put it through. Not sure what type of wench you're using butt that thing saved your hyde as did your Wife Lara as well. What a champ she was throughout the whole vid. Jumping right out to get the wench line all set when so many others wouldn't know what to do or just whine or moan doing it.
    Instead of wrapping the line on the front have you thought about putting the line in a bag for easier access?
    Looking forward to seeing what else you two get into next. Just wish all your other vids were at least 10-15 minutes long though.

      Glad you enjoyed it. Its a Carbon 9500lbs winch and it certainly give you a lot more confidence. Realistically I may have been able to get out of most of using Maxtrax we had but the winch is more reliable and doesn't result in muddy bits of plastic you have to store somewhere. I hadn't thought of a winch rope bag. Might have to give it a look. The two poles are pretty easy to use, just need to fine tune the technique a bit. So much work goes into these longer videos! But I'm planning to hopefully do a few longer/more interactive videos in the future.

    I am absolutely in awe about both your skills and the Subaru. Amazing what this car can do. How do you keep it running under water? What engine is it? Suspension is raised i see but i love this off-roading. Brilliant video.

      It's just the stock EJ253 non turbo petrol motor. Most modern well designed petrol motors run fine submerged now they do not have distributors. If you tried to drive through salt water you would have issues as it is way more conductive but fresh water is fine.

      Unfortunately I don't. The mounting is very well hidden when its on the car. If I take it off to service the winch in the future I will take a video showing the mounting.

    Awesome effort - you are keen. I am planning a trip up that way in June /July 2022, but I wont be taking the 2018 Outback over that track even after a lift and some mods - too much technology that can go wrong... Might have to invest in an older Subaru for the fun stuff.

    • @SubaruOffRoad
      @SubaruOffRoad  3 роки тому +1

      By June/July the water levels are a lot lower so you would have less risk. Still probably not the best idea for the new vehicle though!

    I'm wondering what the point of Gunshot creek is. Go ass over hood and your drowned and it doesn't really appear to test either the driver or rig. That said, what a great video! I'm starting a build on my '21 Forester and binge watching for ideas. My suspension should be here next week, tires will be right after that! Thanks for the time and effort you put into these very helpful videos!!

    • @SubaruOffRoad
      @SubaruOffRoad  10 місяців тому +1

      Yeah there isn't a lot of point to gunshot. Tests out approach angle and not that much else. Later in the season after a few cars have cleared the mud it can be driven by some vehicles. Good luck with the build!

    Great video you guys, making memories. Early in the season is the best time to go despite the deep water, before all the "earthmoving" crowds make everything pretty impassable. The best trips we've had up the OTT was in a little Suzuki Jimny, four times, five other times in a LandRover, (lived in Cooktown, so local), but the light vehicles make easier work of it.
    What mods have you done to make the Subie Forrester run underwater? It performs beautifully. Again great work.

    • @SubaruOffRoad
      @SubaruOffRoad  2 роки тому

      Cheers! Yes we were actually surprised how easy the track was. If you ignore floating I can count the times we broke traction at all on one hand. Will have to go back later in the season and see how different it is. The stock engine setup actually runs perfectly fine underwater, its well designed and no distributor helps heaps. I have waterproofed quite a few sensors and moved the ECU up higher to make it more reliable when constantly being submerged as eventually some of the sensors can start to play up from water ingress. The only time I have some issues with water is over here in WA where the rivers have a much higher salt content which can sometimes cause a miss. The fresh Cape York water was no problems at all though!

      @@SubaruOffRoad yes it was something I thought I'd never see from a Subaru, good on you, just goes to show you don't need a fully tricked out $100k monster to have great fun doing something so significant. It's a "nature's wonderland" up here just after the "wet" season, so beautiful. I'm impressed that the standard set up is that good. Well done you guys...

    Amazing video to watch. Adventure of a lifetime! What camera gear did you use? The drone follow me shots look awesome. Also how did you do the tracking at Nolans on the tripod?

    • @SubaruOffRoad
      @SubaruOffRoad  2 роки тому

      The drone is a DJI mavic 2 air. Most of the other filming was done using a DJI pocket 2 which gives the nice smooth gimbal footage in a hand held camera. The "tracking" on the tripod was just filming in 4k and then zooming in when editing as the final video is only 1080p. Have yet to find a camera that will automatically frame a vehicle reliably and zoom/follow.
