  • #82 Making Frit
    I show you a grain mill grinder that works great for making glass frit. I use it to make a "Frit Mix" that will be used as sand in my fused glass projects. I use sifters to separate the sizes. And remember, when working with frit be sure to wear a good face mask. I've provided a link below to all of the products used in this video. I hope you enjoy watching!

    does this frit also need magnet to remove the metallic powders? or the blades hardly enough not to chip?

      The blades are pretty strong but a magnet to remove any metal shavings would be a good idea.

    How long will the blades last and where can you buy replacement blades?

  • @CaptMike
    @CaptMike 4 роки тому +3

    Hi Susan great intro! Tell me how long the blades last. I do the same thing with old blenders, but it is too costly to replace the blades. If you don't pick up the blenders at a thrift store for around $5 you can't win (about 5 to 10 pounds of glass and the blades are shot). Also, some one posted somewhere that adding a little water to the process helps blade wear. Have you tried that yet?

    • @debbiezito6199
      @debbiezito6199 4 роки тому +5

      Capt Mike I have used a old blender and Always added a small amount of water. Have mesh strainers for fine size frit. Works best with water. Blades still grinding well after 30 plus uses.

      Unless your shop vac is HEPA filtered you're just blowing the finest (and worst) particulate out the back end exhaust port of the shop vac. If your vac has an exhaust port that you can connect a hose to, then you could run the hose outside through a window or door, or better yet just do it all outside.

    I just got this very same grinder. I have only used it once but I can tell you I love it. I works like a charm. However...I DID run a magnet (in a small plastic bag to make getting the iron filings off of it easier) through the smaller grains of frit. There was a whole lot of metal in that frit!!!! So but sure not to skip that step. I did it outside, with a respirator on. It is very dusty as you can tell. I see in the comments below that Sue Darte suggests the use of a vacuum. That is what I will try next time. :) Thanks for the review Susan McGarry!

      Lot of metal ,like too much trouble? I purchased a frit maker yrs ago and what a waste of 70$ . Used it once😂I’m very interested in this machine , just don’t want to be constantly hours of removing metal. But with a thick clean bag and hammer works somewhat for me when I’m running low on frit . I buy the thick plastic from Lowe’s . I hammer it down to tiny as possible and then crush in a glass blender , no metal all powder frit . Thanks Susan ! I am interested in getting this after seeing your video and reading all the comments but have a question. I would be getting this to make powder and fine frit - are you able to get all the metal out with a magnet so you are able to use the powder and fine frit? Any advise or tips on using magnets to make sure all the metal is out.

    • @SusanMcGarryGlass
      @SusanMcGarryGlass  4 роки тому

      Mireya Mundie metal is an issue with most frit makers. I just use a strong magnet and comb through it until it stops picking up the metal. But I also don’t use this as my primary source of frit. It’s only when I need a small amount or special color.
