If you hear creaking and cracking noise when you go uphill from your bottom bracket, then I'd recommend you to check the chain ring, it has like 4 bolts, you need to either use grease or loctite compound then tighten it up very well.

You may have mentioned it, but be sure to check your frame for cracks! I had an aluminum bike that I chased a creak on for weeks before finally realizing I had cracks in the welds near the bottom bracket!

Me too. Mine was a Boardman. Halfords were as good as gold and replaced the frame under the lifetime warranty.

I had a creak on my road bike, that's more annoying as gliding along should be a serene quiet experience...worked my way up from pedals, cranks, BB, seatpost and what finally got it was a drop of ProLink on where the saddle rails at the rear enter the plastic, and make sure you flex the saddle at these points to let it penetrate....

I fightet a while against two creaks. First creak was caused by a slightly loose cassette, the second was caused by a rusty rear suspension pivot bearing. Yes, this bike wasn't even 3 months old, so in the end a warranty replacement. It took the bike mechanic about 3 or 4 visits until he found and fixed it.

You mention cable rub at the end, and this should be elaborated to include internal routed cables.Since they are inside the frame, any rubbing or binding can resonate and create creaks or squeaks you can't quite echolocate. It's a huge pain, but the internal cables can be quieted with tape wraps, or spraying in some grease or as a last resort spray foam insulation.

    Amazing video! Thank you🙏🏼
I am wondering - what could be the reason if the headset creaks only arrive about 20/30 min into the ride, and can’t be reached when rotating the handlebars 90 degrees, but only when pedaling, and only when the hand are on the bars, otherwise when pedaling without touching the handlebars - no creaking noise🤷🏻‍♂️
    What would you say?

I had a 2005 volvo XC70 that creaked on bad pavement I removed practically all the interior added grommets n silicone, new clips etc
    Hours, days, spent!
Found the culprit when I cleaned the car to sell it yrs later...
It was a dog toy stuck in my passenger seat rails, it broke and parts of it got properly incrusted into the seat rail.
I was so mad and relieved at the same time 😂

  • @ish474

I fought a squeak around the head tube for half a season only to realize it was the cables going through the grommets on the internal routing one drop of chain lube and they never made another noise

I've rebuilt a 2021 Rockhopper an on it's Cairngorms maiden voyage on Friday developed a really sporadic and annoying "warble"... does it when I'm out the saddle so not that, does it when I'm freewheeling or just sat on the saddle so not the crank area, reckon it has to be the (admittedly "el cheapo") new Amazon Raleigh wheels, even though prior to use I stripped and greased the hub bearings...it's not the brakes either... maybe spoke/rim interface?? Will have to give it a post ride check over.... the fact it's random is most annoying and biking along looking at the bike and not ahead is a bloody recipe for disaster!

As far as the seat post is concerned taking taking out at least once a year and greasing can save you a big headache later

if you grease up locknut, friction between each thread is lower compare to no grease so 40Nm is not 40Nm really. what I mean is yes you put 40Nm of force on that wrench that you using but you make this nut even tighter then without grease, so you put more stres on the threads and it may twist it. manufacturers data about torx are based on ungreased threads at least it's my knowledge, so if you use grease you should use lower Torx on nuts in my opinion and it will be just as tight

Remember to not ingore unexpected noises, especially on full sus bikes. If after some rain your bike's shock is noisy it could be that the mount on the shock now has insuficient or dry lubrication

Saddle rails doing my head in at the moment. Fitted a fox dropper on my bike and the saddle doesn’t seem to fit the clamp correctly and when I’m sat on it causes it to creak n flex

No grease on the stem / bar interface? I usually grease it on alloy components to stop creaks and have never noticed any issues... bars have never rotated or moved. I have seen several other people do this too. What is the reasoning to keep grease away from there? It's not really any different a scenario to greasing and clamping a seatpost.

i'm confused. Why put grease on non moving parts like nuts & bolts, saddles, stems, seatpost clamps, , etc, etc, anyway. Wouldn't a tiny drop of oil be better.

I'll like some advice. I have a Cannondale Flash carbon frame. It has bb30 bottom bracket but i use shimano deore XT m8000 cranks. For that I use FSA adaptors so i can use those cranks. I struggle with creaks on a specific part of the pedal stroke. Work done for fixing it: checking cassette is tigh correctly; clean and regrease hub; clean, re torque cranks (once found the left arm was loose even after it had been torqued correctly probably 1-2 months earlier); changed bearings of the bb since old were worn out and new ones have been for around 4 months and less than 2000km (proper tools were used to set the bearing since those need to be pressed in) and taking off seat post, clean it and put it back with its grease
Any idea what may cause that. It really bothers me since when i pedal with low force it doesn't makes that noise. Only when ascending/sprint/hard pedalling since going fast. Gets worse after cross country race/training

    • @gmbntech
      @gmbntech  4 місяці тому

If the noise is still present when out of the saddle you can eliminate the saddle/seat post. The next thing to try is to see if the noise is present when pedalling with no hands (only if you are able to), if the noise can still be heard you can eliminate the headset area. If it is still making noise, it could be the mating face of the BB shell and the frame. Have you tried reinstalling the shell? If not you should try that. Noise travels in carbon frames so it's tough to pinpoint the sources of noise 😬 Hope this helps!
