I am glad it helped everyone. I hope this video makes sure Ocarina making is a little more common which in long term leads to alot more ocarina players.
I once knew a boy who made an ocarina out of some very large seed from a native Australian tree. He made a small hole and carefully (and slowly!) picked out all the inner flesh with a spike of some sort. Once it was hollowed out there was only the hard seed shell left. He then made an extra hole, or two, and it worked as a fun ocarina...
@@truskoysusaventuras I think it was a giant seed from the Black Bean tree (Castanospermum australe). The flesh inside the nut is toxic, but it didn't seem to do any harm blowing into the hollowed out shell. Of course, the shell could be lacquered, as well. ;D 🎵
@@sarahhavillamelooliveira5825 That would be another possibility, using a small gourd as ocarina. Lacquering it would give it strength, as well. ;D 🎵🦜️😸
I used this tutorial to make my physics project (making an instrument). I managed to make it a good sounding C major out of oven bake clay. I also did have to restart once because of the last hole. Thanks, Ace!
I have been wanting to make an ocarina for a while now and the other videos on UA-cam make it really complicated however yours helped me to understand how they work and I am also hoping to make one. Thanks a load man and have a great day.
They make Easter eggs a bit like this, for when you break the chocolate open, you can see that they fused the two halves together. Now all I have to do is just bore a couple of holes in the right places on a chocolate Easter egg! 😋🍓♬ I suppose large ostrich eggs and emu eggs have been hollowed/blown out for use as ocarinas?
I can make ocarinas now finnaly because I jusf did not give up I was so tired making them all day they were all a failure I cryed so so much but my mom said its ok She just said to not give up until I finnaly Know how to make them so I tryed to make My very own ocarina and I wass a sucksess finnaly
That's how you do it. Just keep doing it. You've got to want it. That's what I tell people who tell me they have no "musical talent". Yes you do. You just have to practice, like everyone else. No one picks up an instrument and starts to play. You've got to want it. You have to work for it but once you have, the rewards are immeasurable. Same with making ocarinas or anything else. You're going to fail. You've just got to want it bad enough to not give up. Kudos to you my friend.
Thanks for answering! As of now I really don't know what I'm looking for (im looking for one as a gift for someone) so ill do some more research and if I decide on something ill look to you first! Thanks again!
Thanks! If it is a choice between air fire clay and oven clay i'd just find someone to make an ocarina for you. I meen sure it is posible but it won't turn out very well no matter how good of an ocarina maker you are. If you had something in mind that you wanted specificly I could make you a custom order ocarina. I only have one other custom order and that is finished and I am just starting a new batch of 4-hole ocarinas. It would be no problem at all to add one more ocarina to the batch.
It might take you longer than it did for me because before I tried this I nearly mastered every type of ocarina there was and was very fimiliar with how they worked. Also are you useing the right tools for this? As for clay any normal pottery clay should do. I used skulpy while learning so I could start over if I messed up. If we can not figure something out you could refer your viewers to this video for the tyme being untill you learn to make a few yourself.
Yes. Twice if you want to glaze it. With the clay I use you fire it untill it is a red color then glaze it and fire it untill it looks like more of a tan color. I am not sure exactly how hot it should be fired at because it depends on what clay you are useing and how large the ocarina is.
It helps alot if you have an ocarina to study from so you can look at the air way. Like I said it takes ALOT of tries before you actualy make a tone and then you have to give it 13 notes which can rin the tone in the process. They are MUCH easier to learn to play than to make. I'd be able to give you more helpfull advice if I could see how you are making your ocarina.
Ace, how long can clay sit before getting fired? I don't own a kiln yet, but there is a local potter I could probably pay to fire them for me. Could a clay ocarina sit for a week or two before getting fired, or should it be done sooner?
This is the best tutorial iv seen! One question though, If I don't have access to a kiln, is the best alternative a finer air dry clay? Or maybe a low firing temp clay ? (Like one i could do in my oven) thanks!
Well unless you have your youtube settings to not show subscribers your comments I think they have allready found out. Anyway just keep practiceing at it. Oh and if you can not play songs on the ocarina perfect when it is still moldable clay do not let it dry out becaue it will take a long tyme to make it moldable again if you do. Good luck.
Thank you but I would not know anything about that. I use kiln firing with my ocarinas. It realy depends on what clay you use. I prefer either Red Clay or Porcelain.
*+Kevin Sornet* It depends on the type of kiln you are going to use and what it fires at. For example if the kiln fires from cone 5-6 you should get clay that fires at the same cone. Also be sure that if the kiln fires at 5 not to use clay that fires at 05. There is a huge difference between 5 and 05.
HELP! I have tried this many times... Twice I got a whistle out of it but when I tried to add a hole for the note the whistle goes away. When I push the air release in nothing works. The one time I got my tuner my ocarina was in Ab .

So originaly i had planed to make this out of sculpey clay, then you mentioned that the scupley clay isnt as good. I have a creek in my back yard and in this creek this is a large amount of a gray clay, i was wondering if this would be a better alternative then the sculpey... what do you think?
I just buy my clay. I have no idea. Sorry about that. It might not be the purest clay though. Clay is not that expensive so you might look into buying some as we can't be sure what temperature is right for the clay you have. Where I get my clay it is about $10.00 for 25lbs of the stuff. If you have not made an ocarina before skullpy is good practice but don't expect any ocarinas you make from it to last forever. Mine lasted about a year or two.
Very true, but what ill do is use the clay from the creek and just test it out some and see how it works, if it doesnt ill consider using some other clay
Oh you mean try to fire something and then try and make an ocarina out of it if it works. That might work. Just give it plenty of time to cool down. It might explode. Those clay shards are really sharp.
I have some questions. Is there anything besides clay or the tools you used that I could use differently like instead of using clay and those tools what else can I use to make a homemade ocarina cause I'm poor :( like um can I use a pencil to cut out the clay if I might have some pls reply I really want to make an ocarina and bring it to school to show my band teacher an ocarina please reply :)
+Person who likes to Craft things homemade Really, you can probably make an ocarina with any tools. As long as it comes out right. And with materials, you can actually make your own clay! It takes a few days, but it's fairly easy. Google around a bit. There was this article with a dude with a beard, a pretty basic site. I'm having trouble getting the ocarina to make noise when I make the airway, is there something I'm missing? I made mine as close, size wise, to yours and it still isn't making noise...
Just long enough that the clay is not wet but it is still wet enough to make a little dint in it with your finger. I'd say about 15 minutes but it realy depends on the clay you are using.
My ocarina won't make any sound, no matter how much I adjust it. I did press it in, and tried widening the hole, but it just sounds like air each time. Nothing you suggested in the video did anything for it.
Having used the stuff myself and making several ocarinas out of sculpy I can without a doubt say that, No. No it is not good for this at all. That depends on what type of ocarina it is. If it has Zelda fingering or traditional Fingering. OR if it has thumb holes or not. What type were you thinking of?
That would be a left handed Nintendo style fingering 9-hole ocarina. It will need thumb holes to play actual zelda songs. Hmmm...Roughly $55.00 I'd say. I can't be sure unless it is finished though.
Well the real Ocarina of time is a left handed ocarina but it would be no trouble making it right handed. The shipping might add a bit depending on where you live.
Cwrwgl On a tuning scale it goes B to C. Unless C flat is what you call B. To be correct though there is no C flat or B sharp. The most common scale is C, C#, D, Eb, E, F, F#, G, G#, A, Bb, B, C. Oh but maybe he had the sharps and flats mixed up as there is a C sharp and B flat.

That would be a left handed Nintendo style fingering 9-hole ocarina. It will need thumb holes to play actual zelda songs. Hmmm...Roughly $55.00 I'd say. I can't be sure unless it is finished though.
i am right handed though and its 55 with delivery?
Well the real Ocarina of time is a left handed ocarina but it would be no trouble making it right handed. The shipping might add a bit depending on where you live.
I can get it to whistle.
By the way that is a joke. Do not ever try to get your oven as hot as 1730⁰F. Haha.
hey guy! your link is incorrect
A sharp? I know theres a C flat, a B sharp but A sharp?
A Sharp is the same as B Flat
I think you're joking, but just in case there is no C flat.
