Bernadette - Rock 'n' Roll Medley for accordion

  • When I first started to learn the accordion, I thought that the accordion could only play waltzes and polkas. I was 10, when I attended the Accordion Society of Australia's festival in Melbourne and heard New Zealand accordionist Maurice Jones play rock 'n' roll on the accordion. I must give credit to him for the base foundation of this medley, to which I have added a few more of my favorites. The medley includes Rockin' Robin, Blueberry Hill, See You Later Alligator, Blue Suede Shoes and Rock Around the Clock.

Back in 1964 while stationed overseas I had a roommate who had an accordion, He played everything from Rock and Roll, Polka, Jazz, Country and even classicals on that thing. When he pulled it out there was always a crowd of us to listen to him. Ran into him several
years later down in Texas and he still jiving Country plus other music. He experimented with adding other stuff to his Squeeze Box and could really get the place rocking when he
    wound up!

Thank you very much! The accordion fits so well into almost every genre of music, especially rock 'n' roll. This is very ironic since it was the dawn of rock 'n' roll music that spelled the downfall of the accordion in the latter part of the 20th century. I've always had my own thoughts on this and I believe a significant negative impact was that most accordionists didn't know what to do with the left hand (bass side). If you look at my channel content, you will see that I play many different styles of music, many of which would be considered 'outside the box' so to speak. I didn't know about your book but it is a must have for me now! Bernadette 🤩

Bernadette you never cease to amaze me...... What a talented person you are! I have an Iorio Syntara Accorgan sitting in a storage loft -- I played it for many years -- but it just cost too much to maintain. Never dreamed that a Syntara could sound so terrific! You go girl!!!!!

Thank you very much for your compliment! I think the Syntara was a much underrated instrument. However, I understand what you are say. I had to retire my Syntara because it was developing too many electronic and age related problems and parts were impossible to procure. I now have two beautiful accordions with MIDI added and I use an older JV-1010 module which I still believe has some of the best sounds. Bernadette

@@Rock.Pop.and.More_4accordion I hear you! Yes the PC boards get brittle in the tone generator and they develop cracks in the printed circuit board connections. @@Rock.Pop.and.More_4accordion In my humble opinion I would say the only thing that even approaches Ketron.....is Korg. Korg voices are terrific also, but most of Korg's seem to be GENERAL MIDI (not sampled).
I've been listening to a lot of Dale Mathis's videos on the Roland x series accordions. They have very nice sounds...... But they all sound like they're generated. They don't seem to have the proper attack or decay that a real instrument would have.
      I don't know..... I guess I'm just a purist at heart!
I absolutely love your videos Bernadette...... And I look forward to listening to a new one each time. There may be 40 or 50 or more accordionists on UA-cam...... And each one tries to do the "stick" to promote themselves. But when you play, it's like you get so much "into the music" (you own it)..... that you really don't care to try to impress your audience..... You're just enjoying the beauty of the composition and whatever you can add to it through your personal ornamentation. To my way of thinking that's what a musician should do.

@@johndonlan5956 For me, the most important thing is that the digital sounds blend in well with the acoustic sound of the accordion. @Rock.Pop.and.More_4accordion  2 роки тому +1

Thank you very much, Douglas! I'm so glad you enjoy my rock 'n' roll for the accordion. I have been asked about how I play the basses before so I plan to make a bass tutorial video. I believe that the left hand of the accordion is equally as important as the right hand. It is very important to know all the bass notes (location), scales, and the notes that comprise the chords. As you will see in my tutorial, there are two approaches to play the basses like a base guitar, as you put it. The approach you choose depends on the type of song you are playing. One approach is to play the basses as you hear them on a song you like. For example, La Bamba has a very definite bass pattern. Listen to the song and play the basses as you hear them. Other rock 'n' roll songs require what I call the bass guitar/percussion pattern or triplets pattern. The bass note is played for two counts of the triplet and the chord is played for the last count, often emulating the bass line and the snare drum pattern. This pattern requires more effort since you are playing a bass guitar pattern and a rhythm as well. I know it sounds very complicated which is why I will proved a tutorial for my bass patterns. In the meantime, learn your basses and where they are located including counterbasses. I hope I haven't confused you and stay tuned. Bernadette

Merci beaucoup pour votre compliment ! Comme je suis aveugle, j'apprends la musique en écoutant plusieurs versions des chansons puis en faisant mon propre arrangement. Je suis désolé mais je n'ai pas de copies écrites de la musique. Bernadette

fantastic bravo if only you could write music as well but you play so advanced it would be very hard to copy its almost like there is more than one accordianist playing the old saying 20 fingers springs to mind .thank you for the music

Wow!! Either you’re awfully little or that accordion is huge!!

    • @Rock.Pop.and.More_4accordion

The accordion is big because of the electronic module on the front of the accordion under the grill. Doesn't feel too heavy to play but a bit awkward. I've now retired it which was an older accorgan type with a separate generator and will be using a MIDI accordion in the future. Bernadette

You are quite correct! I try to use the electronic capabilities as little as possible because, after all, I am an accordionist. I never used the rhythm section only some of the sounds to add dimension and texture to my playing but all the notes are played by me. Bernadette 🪗🪗🤩🤩

@@nettiemarie2556 Hi. I've started categorizing my songs in my playlists. I don't have many polkas. There are a couple of classical polkas but I don't think that is what you mean. My daughter Stasha as recorded a couple of polkas that are probably what you are thinking of. My husband and I play them as a trio with her. You can look them up under Stasha. There are also some lovely waltzes. Since my husband used to play in a polka band we'll undoubtedly add some to the repertoire. Bernadette

Thank you for your compliment! Whenever you put together a medley of songs with different tempos, even though they are the same genre, you deal with a 'rob Peter to pay Paul' situation. You can easily ruin the medley by trying to enforce the same tempo on all the songs so, taking that into consideration, my goal was to make an exciting and interesting medley, not just a bunch of songs put to a 'click track.'
