Bernadette - "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)" for accordion and vocals
"The Christmas Song," commonly subtitled "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire" was originally subtitled "Merry Christmas to You." It was written in 1945 by Robert Wells and Mel Tormé. 'The Nat King Cole Trio' first recorded the song in 1946. A second recording was made by Cole shortly thereafter, which added a small string section. This version became a hit on pop and rhythm and blue charts. Cole recorded the song again in 1953 and 1961 using a full orchestra arrangement. The 1961 version is generally regarded as definitive. In 1974, the original 1946 recording was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. In 2022, Cole's 1961 recording was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the US National Recording Registry as being culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant. "The Christmas Song" has been covered by numerous artists such as Bing Crosby, Perry Como, Christina Aguilera, and Michael Bublé among others. The song has charted on the Billboard Adult Contemporary, Billboard Hot 100, and Christian Songs charts. I hope you enjoy my interpretation.

    That one is always a sweet listen and you have the tone colours just right. All the very best for your Christmas and New Year. Slightly offtopic, after Christmas and New Year are settled, here is an old foxtrot version of a Sigmund Romberg piece by a band led by a Mark Fisher. It was adapted from part of a light opera to an old 78 rpm record. It was recorded in the early 1930s and is titled "I Bring A Love Song". I imagine you and your daughter might duet the piece, taking turns in the melody with your ability with the ornamentations backgrounding her instrumental solo of the vocal verse on the record. I tried it on accordion but the stiff wrist joint stops me from bending around the corner to play complex chords with the right hand these days. ua-cam.com/video/3PJZhdE4u0c/v-deo.html

    Well you did tell me that you would be getting into Christmas music before you continued with anymore classical. This is going to be funny since you're originally from Australia. There was a time when I really enjoyed listening to Christmas music but ever since the event I can't seem to tolerate it much anymore except for a traditional piece called Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming. There's something about the music that melts away the tiredness and smooths one's nerves back to health. That's this song. Even though I'm Canadian, I was in the U. S. Navy (JAG Corps - military law) for 29 years. So here is the event I allude to. I spent a transfer to Australia for 4 years. My first Christmas there changed me a lot. I was dive bombed by Magpies (they have an amazing song by the way), watched a guy with a trained kangaroo... and him go at it in a real boxing match (crazy), saw Santa's surfing on the beach, and heard the craziest Christmas festivities Christmas songs ever (no one would believe me unless they were there). I was in a pub at the Young & Jacksons Hotel in Melbourne and this one guy started singing On the First Day of Aussie, My True Love Gave To Me... you know how this goes. I started to laugh, it was so funny. Then someone shouted, "Oh, oh, we have an out of towner here." All good honest fun. Now I live in Toronto (very cold, lots of ice and snow) but every Christmas season my attention goes to Australia. I just can't seem to get into any northern hemisphere kind of Christmas spirit. And this year I'll probably bury myself at home as I usually do until New Years approaches. But isn't that crazy. But your Giulietti sounds amazing and you really know how to make it rock. So I'm going to end this by telling you that tomorrow is my birthday (7 December) and I'll be 83. Have a few jokes for you. You know you're old when you buy a cremation funeral and the cost is 50% off if you die in a fire. You know your really old when you enter an antique shop and they won't let you leave. I hope you get some laughs from that. More later. Blessings. Richard.

      @Rock.Pop.and.More_4accordion 12 днів тому

      Happy belated birthday, Richard! I hope you had a lovely day and I was certainly thinking of you. My experiences of Christmas are exactly the inverse of yours. Growing up in Australia, I know what you mean about the swooping magpies and it's more of a case of chestnuts roasting on the sidewalk, the footpath to be exact. Eighteen years ago Ed invited me over for a white Christmas and I came over and loved it. Australia has its festivities, you're quite correct, but it was always very hot. I love the snow and Christmas always seems to shine brighter here for me, especially with my little girl. I will recommend a film to you, Donovan's Reef, starring John Wayne and Lee Marvin. It is a Christmas movie set in a beautiful island paradise and I always think of you because both John Wayne and Lee Marvin's characters have birthdays on December 7th. If anything will lift you spirits for Christmas, this film should do the trick. It's an old movie but it is just fun to watch. We actually watch it every Christmas night. That way, I have the best of both worlds, my while Christmas and the tropical one on film. By the way, as far as I know, Young and Jacksons is still running. I wish you a merry Christmas! No one should be sad at Christmas time. As far as New Years is concerned, Ed always seems to get the blues so, we watch another tropical favorite, Father Goose with Cary Grant and Leslie Caron. I wish you a bright New Year and I will play some baroque for you. Bernadette

      @@Rock.Pop.and.More_4accordion Thank you for your most kind and thoughtful reply. And a very Merry Christmas to you and your family as well Bernadette. I must tell you I'm too stubborn to be depressed, rather those four Christmas's in Australia fundamentally changed my outlook in ways I never anticipated. After all, I told a few jokes about getting old at the end of my comment. It has crossed my mind from time to time that from an anthropological viewpoint, how fundamentally changed were those explorers on ships changed when Australia and its native inhabitants were first being discovered. If anything I'm quite curious about my own reactions and responses, a kind of self reflection. I'm really looking toward 2025. I think the entire world is going to be fundamentally changed by many new revelations such that most people will be shocked and overwhelmed by the news coming out. However, I also think we're going to be fundamentally changed about new and marvelous things and changes too. But for now it's let's wait and see. For the moment May the Blessings Be. Richard.

      @@kimpossiblefan-c3g First of all, that depends on the style of music you play. That would determine what style of tuning you would find most useful. You may want to look at the Liberty Bellows website. I've bought accordions from them and have had good luck. They also post videos so you can hear how the accordion sounds. Also, they repair accordions and especially with older instruments it is good to have a source for repair. For 2000 dollars you are looking at an older second hand accordion or, if it's newer, a cheap accordion. Ebay can also be a possibility but it is hit or miss since many of the sellers don't know much about the products they are selling but still want to make money and others are just dumping the instrument. At first I thought this was just an impressionist fantasy piece because the donkey is white... then an idea came to me to look it up. Sure enough there is such a thing as a white donkey. PetShun describes them as rare with elusive beauty and unique genetics. Sounds like the composer knew what he was describing through his music. I like the way you describe that through your Titano. And as an afterthought, of all the accordions I've seen and heard you play... and you have many... I think the sound of the Giulietti's and the Titano have the cleanest and brightest sounding reeds. Additionally the base on the Titano, in this piece, has a lot of presence without sounding intrusive... a nice harmonic complement with the treble register. Looking forward to hearing more of these and even some classical and early baroque. Interesting thing about the whole baroque period to me is that the high baroque period has such an ornamental distortion to the artistry of the music... very snobby sounding... whereas the early baroque period demonstrates the artists love of pure music itself. Hope to hear more classical and early baroque. Blessings. Richard

      Thank you very much, Richard! In my own interpretation, the little white donkey is very playful and mischievous and unpredictable. I did not want all the phrases to be the same. Your white donkey reference reminds me of the tiny horse in the film, "The Valley of Gwangi," one of the early dinosaur films, maybe you remember it. I'm getting into Christmas mode at the moment so I'll get back into baroque after the New Year, among other styles of music. Bernadette

    The title reminded me of a long forgotten novelty song which received radio airplay during the mid-1950s. The piece was titled "Little Red Monkey". It is a little complex than it seems. It might be a good challenge as a duet with your daughter if you take over the harder parts and maybe bounce solo back and forth between you both in a sort of contesting style. A free base accordion is something in all my years I had never heard of. It must have been really difficult to learn. Your piece is a delight to hear. The Rosemary Clooney version of "Little Red Monkey" can be found via this link. ua-cam.com/video/pyCbs7szSQk/v-deo.html

      Thank you for your interest. I have not heard this song before and it would be a fun song to play as a duet. When I first started reading your comment, I thought you were going to mention Donkey Serenade, which is also a great piece for Stasha. So I will be keeping her busy after the new year. It is coming up to Christmas so, you'll have to watch "Carols by Candlelight" at the Myer Music Bowl for me. Bernadette

      Donkey Serenade would certainly work in accordion duet. Here is a link to a massed brass band rendition of Donkey Serenade which might a listening pleasure for you. ua-cam.com/video/aaDxZA88V7A/v-deo.html Translating that sound to accordion might not be easy. My imagining is that after an elaborate intro, your daughter could lead in solo with the first melody in a clarinet register with you accompanying lightly. Through next verses you might progressively lift to full orchestra with your characteristic octave keyboard chords on your electronically augmented accordion. You would both revert to your daughter on solo with your quiet accompaniment closing towards the conclusion with the finale being the orchestration again on your electronic instrument.

      Thank you for your comments, Patricia! This is the first time Stasha has played in front of a large crowd and she said she was somewhat overwhelmed. She was also very curious and looked around, as curious about her audience as they were about her. Sorry about the microphone but because of the way people had moved around the tables, my husband could not get a good clear picture of both of us. Since this was Stasha's song, he concentrated and her. Bernadette and Stasha
