This version of the moving musical tribute includes a few more seconds of reaction at the end of piece, but sadly includes the News reader's comments.
the look on Paul's face says it all...grief, anger, and sadness. this may not be his best, but it is the most heartfelt.
Hope you're well almost a decade later! I can never forget to watch this, and I can never watch this without shedding a tear. At least once a year, I watch this and lose it a little bit. Tonight was the night. Anyone can say whatever they want about the performance itself, but it's powerful.
This has to be one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.
Ever!
Paul, you will never know just how many souls you have touched with just you and your guitar, your heart and your soul have been a beacon of hope a bright light in our darkest night. God bless you Paul, long may you live Mr. Simon.
I never have seen Paul in this mood .........
You can see all the pain in his face .....
Thank you , Paul ,for your music !!!!
Jürgen
So true.
my favorite version. He is the heart of NYC.
I have no clue how anyone can say this sucks, I think Paul sounded great, a dude with a guitar singing from the heart, you cant get any better than that.
Inability to communicate isn't new, and it isn't going away. Paul Simon just hit the nail on the head. The song is timeless, the theme relevant since humans have chosen their best bet is to be their own gods, metaphors are the time bound aspect. We're lucky it was written so close to our lifetime that it isn't lost in the information overload and we can hear the sound, of silence. As long as humans are fallible, this song is true. As long as we remember we are fallible, the song is beautiful.
This is the true meaning of singing from the heart. Thank you Paul Simon for your deeply moving words and music.
Still one of the most beloved performers and gentleman that blesses us with his tremendous talent. God bless us all 🙏❤️🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Thank you. I just wanted to say that. Thank you for the refuge and hospitality your countrymen gave us on 9/11. Thank you for being decent, wonderful, amazing people. Thank you for taking in complete fucking strangers with no contact other than." We need help. Shit is fucked."
Thank you.
i love any version with the extended riff before the first verse. a song that transcends time, era and genre, whatever music you like, this is a masterpiece of songwriting
Paul, looking more like a grandfather than a 60's free spirit did the right thing he learned from his grandparents who did great things, he stood with us, he paid homage, he felt the scare and fear we all felt on that day. I recall that night the bastards struck the WTC who made make shifts boats that brought the injured to Jersey City while F-18 jet fighters guarded us in the skies up above. It was the most eerie experience and it was indeed silent. There were no words on that day. Just sadness and so much of it with restrained anger...and Paul, a native NY-er, reminded in so many songs over the long years, shown on aged but gentle face, you were our older brother and you did what the great generation did for your generation, you stood tall, you cried with us and you taught us to Never forget thru your music and spirit.................RIP !
+Jayson Williams Super nice sentiments, Jayson. I may have read your post wrong, but I read that you were wishing Paul Simon "RIP". Paul is, thank heavens, alive and well. Like I said, I think I read you wrong, and if I did, my apologies, friend.
I believe my comments were masked in the sympathies of the families who had loved ones on Sept. 11, 2001 not Paul. However, our generation had very few people to lean on and Paul stood with us - for that alone - he is forever a favorite son of New York and it is nice to bring his memories with us again - if that makes any sense - thanks for reading
I thought I had it wrong!!! Yes, I agree with you about Paul Simon being a favored son of NYC. We were blessed to have grown up with some mighty fine music, indeed.
I appreciate you kind reading my comments...we shall never forget that day and the politicians who lied to us...Paul did the right thing and your right, Paul was like an older brother who stood with us - - peace
indeed Jayson, your words are true, your words are deep, someday the truth will be known to all. God bless all the mourners, God bless all the heroes who died on that horrific dark dark day.
Loving, pure, funny little beautiful Paul Simon. Standing there in a sea of greif, singing a song that was sad enough long ago.... It breaks my heart even more to see such a pure spirit standing in the face of this mountain of greif. The pain plain to see on his face. 😪 I will never forget this. 😪 God I hope the human race finds a way to work together.... .🥺
I love you! Your comment cannot be amplified enough!
@@trumphatesyou Aww thanks... 😁
A great version of one of the greatest songs by one of the greatest men
Oh Paul, how deep and true you interpreted this monumental song! In NYC! thanks ,Paul; You're so great!best regards from France.
***** interpreted means ' to sing ' in French,
The greatest version of the song in my eyes
such a great song ! Thanks Paul, This song has been and will be with me for all my life.
I think Paul did a great job there. How he plays it doesn't matter to me, it still is an awesome song. This song bring so much memories back to me. Thanks for the upload.
I still tear up every time I watch this
I'm french and just come back from NY. I went to the 9/11 memorial and had this song in my head all the visit long.
God bless america.
Well, I was getting tearful watching this. Would I have felt that way if he was giving a soulless performance? Paul Simon is around 70 years old and has more soul than most musicians half his age.
Moves my heart very emotional. thanks Paul and Art
This is such an immensely powerful moment
i love the live versions of this song with the extended intro, it's a beautiful beautiful piece of music, very good made perfect with arty harmonising
Why does everything have to evolve into an argument? Why can't people just appreciate this wonderful tribute to this horrible and tragic event? It's disrespectful....
you can count on Paul Simon to respond with heart.God love him for caring.
Kind of reminds me of Cash's version of "Hurt". So much emotion in his face, his voice, and the music coming from his finger tips.
Absolutely truly, he is the king of this song, both wants and sings.
Music is incredible. Such power Paul Simon wields by himself and his guitar. Just beautiful
We all know who really done this! Not knocking this tribute as it's amazing, the powers that be need to watch this and realise that life is more than money and power, we are all humankind sharing a wonderful reality. You can't take money and power to the grave. Learn to love one another and help mankind progress for our children and grandchildren instead of all these pointless wars. I beg you, look into your heart, make the world a better place for all, rich, poor, black, white. Just my feeling!
Remember watching this back in 2011.
No autotune! Terrific.
Go Paul!
5-5-5-5 While responding to Manhattan Box 55-8087. 343 of the bravest Americans lost their lives trying to save others. God Bless you all.
Very heartfelt and acoustic......human made without anything else.
How totally perfect ~ a mighty song of an entirely different era: seemingly perfection itself - - as if - -it had been written for the families and loved ones of
the 9/11 citizens of the world tragically lost. A lifetime moment for Mr. Paul Simon and all who experience this tribute. Bravissimo!
This made me cry.
bless the living who survived-- and the many loved ones who mourn their losses. we feel with you. Strength to you who lost the upper floors.
I saw it live - I cried and have been moved all day
for many people who lost their lives from 9-11-01. "I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain
Still remains
Within the sound of silence
In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence
And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dared
Disturb the sound of silence
"Fools, " said I, "You do not know
Silence, like a cancer, grows
Hear my words that I might teach you
Take my arms that I might reach you"
But my words, like silent raindrops fell
And echoed in the wells, of silence
And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made
And the sign flashed out its warning
In the words that it was forming
And the sign said, "The words of the prophets are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls"
And whispered in the sounds of silence"
Simply wonderful tribute by one of the most gifted singer/songwriters of our generation .
I'm crying while watching this....so sad....
Very moving. May God comfort all who need to be comforted.
"In another time and place he would have been called prophet." ...
An Old Sage, indeed.
extremely good and sad at the same time, you can feel the sadness... but it is helping us a lot to start to live after 9/11. JPArduin
The moment he decided to move from "Bridge over Troubled Waters" to " The Sound of Silence" stands as one of the most clear moments of "truth" I have seen in my life.
Paul Simon was most appropriate to perform there. RIP, 2996 souls.
WE ALWAYS LOVE PAUL SIMON ...
This brought tears to my eyes. Few things in life are capable of that.
Master songwriter and guitar player... MASTER.
I don’t get people not thinking this is a great performance. I think it was perfect.
America! Raw and Rare! God Bless us all!
How could anyone dislike this! really
Silence like a cancer grows.... as usual, Mr. Simon is first rate. Thanks for posting.
nice acoustic performance by a legend..............
God bless you Paul.
9/11 poem: The world is are home. Let us cherish this place, for there's non other like it within the far reaches of space. Earth beauty is forever, Her glory divine, a gift from God to God's children humankind.
This is a very moving song. It's a song I sing myself and I love to sing it. It should be said, that here it adds another deeply disturbing (if not chilling) facet in how this song lends itself to this ocassion in how it continues to speak to those who continue to listen.
~F~
es macht mich heute noch sehr, sehr traurig!!!!!
Great versions, i listen that again n again.l feel sad,again for 9/11..
powerfully moving by a true living Legend
que grande eres Paul Simon. esta melodía me traslada a los años 70 y aun me sigue gustando ahora en este lugar. New York.
Seriously, people who can't read emotion shouldn't make comments, this was different than any I've heard of him.
In his eyes we can see: People, look around what You're doing???
Beautiful....i just cried me eyes out :'(
bravo...could not have been said better by anyone nor anyhow...bravo
Most beautiful song . Very moving.
So Beutiful...Simon, you are the best
New Yorkers
Keep yourselves healthy and strong during this pandemic....please
This was a beautiful tribute. In my opinion, after ten years of mourning, we need to stop ripping open the wounds every year. We need to remember, yes, the same way we remember Pearl Harbor, by our own personal tributes. We, as a nation, have more current issues to focus our energies.
i think this is the best version out there!
so touching. no words for it.
I am going to lay it out for those of you who think that, somehow, this performance is less than... In effect he is performing at a national funeral. So he begins in a very grave tone, and he presents the song not as a protest song, as it was originally written, but as a sort of dirge for the lost and the grieving, and also as a gesture of defiance. Got it?
if popular opinion was a smart thing we'd have no more wars, poverty, hunger, racism or hatred. popular opinion mostly sucks if you haven't noticed. i stand firmly on my comments...it's his most famous piece of music and he's been playing it two years short of 5 decades! he better know the damm song by now. I know tons of songs that i didn't even write much better and i've only been at it 3 decades. my opinion stands very firm...he blew off a major obligation...stand firm people!!!!
Paul you are really great..
Totally Awesome performance. Very moving.
A beautiful tribute to the innocence lost on 911.
Well, I for one thought it was great 50 years ago and it's great now. One can't expect him to sound like he did then. Perhaps he was emotional like everyone listening to him. Besides, why all the spewing of hate? That's what's wrong with the world today....too much hate!
People like Paul Simon build the great city NY, great as it is and will be.
Real legend
I appreciate your approach toward my comment, ditto to you as the mature conversation goes, have a nice day good sir!
Simon did the song solo in 65 on his first solo album too, that version also has a different vocal arrangement, he knows that a solo singer can't simply sing half of a harmonie that was written as a whole.
totally agree! some people wont open their hearts and ears to any change
I am Japanese but too sad to hear it.
Although the song is very important for me impressed 45 years ago, the live of this song in the Grand Zero is heard, and the tear stopped stopping.
R.I.P
Sadness, grief and anger that's how I feel :(
Yes I saw thsi live when I was there, great stuff. I too have been writing a track in memory of my father for the past 5 years....they are all on my channel, please take a listen....maybe some of you can relate.
To those saying this is a terrible performance, to hell with you. Can't you see how heavy his face is? Consider two things before you criticize him so quickly. First, He grew up staring at the NY skyline, and he's an American. That, in and of itself, would make him very sad about such a tragedy. Second, the man who helped him perform this song, so many thousands of times, is absent. I think the emotion displayed by this performance justifies it's "Less than stellar" quality. Can you do better?
You can see the sadness on his face. This song is the song.
pure class
oh that's lovely, more balanced, insightful, mature, well thought out, sensitive comments. come on people, grow up. i gave an honest and careful serious critique of a man...in the end a man. and if we do not live in a society where any man can make an honest, globally intelligent comment about another man's lack of responsibility to fulfill his own love for humanity, I don't want to live in that world. but this is my world, i do live in it, and until i die i'll do what i can to make it great
Well maybe it's not his most bombastic performance but why should it be? That day was about 9/11 and the many hundreds who died. If this performance has a flaw it is a fragility that comes from his deep reverence for an earth shattering event. I thought the whole thing was beautiful.
great to hear them play musik on this age
Amazing.
I know she can have an opinion, and I am not denying anyones right to have one, I just disagree with her logic. This may come as a surprise, but thank you for standing up for her, you've got my respect :)
Simplesmente, fantástico e emocionante!
thanks paul
!!! were are with you u.s.a to argentina. fran. and tanks paul ok. beutiful...
True
独唱のサウンド・オブ・サイレンスもステキだな…。グランドゼロで唄うことにも感慨。
I am in Canada...so wished I would have been there for that....
What 9/11. Sick bastard
+TheBooce OfBungles no for the performance dimwit
A joke, dimwit
look at how old he is, look at this situation, a crowd full of grieving people remembering, and honoring the dead, give him some slack, its not the best performance, but under these circumstances he couldn't have done any better
Damn... not his best vocal ever, but heartfelt and beautiful. But powerful as hell... and exquisite guitar. Rock on Paul.
