When the surgeons DO do your ears, they don't "pin them back." What is done is the excess cartilage behind the ears is removed enough for the desired effect. This episode reminds me of Jerry Seinfeld when he asked the audience, "Have you ever wondered why the plastic surgeons refer to nose jobs as rhinoplasty?" It's bad enough that you are self-conscious about your nose and then to be compared to a rhino!!"
That nose job would be alot more expensive today. Brenda does not, at any level, have a big nose. Jimmy Durante had a BIG nose. People on this show often think Benny says his name is Goodman, instead of Goodwin. Benny was hilarious when he spoke of their future kids, big noses and ears and other kids not knowing which to laugh at first. Isn't that nose doc Charles Winchester from MASH? As much as I hate to admit it, I kinda agree with sanfran and gary. The show utterly lost direction after the brilliant wedding episode. It was still funny, and I could never criticize the acting (always first rate) but the focus was lost, it all went in too many directions, and it just wasn't ... as good. That being so, I loved the show anyway. It was (and is) an utter reflection of the NY I knew and loved so much in the 70s.
I think that the focus was exactly where it should have been for 5 full seasons: the sisters and sometimes the mother. I mean the two of them were in every episodes (the only actors that were) and they had, combined, about 50 percent of the dialogue. Even when Joe was in a scene we, as viewers, were okay because we knew that soon enough, Brenda would pop in.
The problems were in the last TWO years, not the first two seasons. It was a mistake to break up Joe and Rhoda. They were initially smart in making him a supporting character and making Brenda the co-star. But getting rid of Joe and bringing in those three IDIOTS (Benny, Gary and the stewardess - Anne Meara, a stewardess???) simply killed the series. But Kavner is adorable (and, yes, her nose is fine).
I think that those new characters, and JOhnny Venture, were fine, as was Earl and Jack. Shows need change and new characters to keep it new and exciting.
I agree with Garyb3397 - series-wise, it had been a mistake to have Rhoda get married -- especially so quickly in the first season. That being said, it was an even BIGGER mistake to have them divorce. The writers, who thought they had painted themselves into a corner with a happily married Rhoda, should have committed to making both the marriage AND the show work. A cloud of sadness hung over the rest of the series after the break-up.
Benny is funny, and Brenda is hilarious.I wish more episodes focused on those two...I don't know why she was so down on herself, she was pretty and never was fat.She looked like a real person and not Hollywood inspired.Rhoda was funny but tended to be b itchy and whiney alot...she was funnier and more pleasant on the Mary Tyler Moore show.

It was getting downright stupid. I still like to watch reruns, because I used to love this show, but all that hysterical behavior about not being thin enough, not being perfect, having low self esteem etc. is grating on your nerves. What a palaver. It is really embarrassing. Brenda is a super actress but, after her screaming fit about her nose in this episode, I had had enough and had to turn it off. The writers of this show got less and less imaginative. It was always the same. They turned Brenda and Rhoda into two self absorbed, self pitying, hysterical and always complaining shrews. Enough is enough. It was going the same way as the MTM show where the supporting cast turned out to be better than the star(s) of the show.

Brenda is insecure so she sees a big nose where nobody else sees it. Similarly, Rhoda thought she was fat especially on Mary's show (because she used to weigh 160 pounds and she was never quite Maryesque, and she had to see her every day.) Both reactions come from real feelings and feelings are not usually about reason.
Dude, you obviously do not have any insecurities. Sure, Brenda does not need a nose job. But, she can't see that because she is insecure. Rhoda and Brenda have insecurities like most people do and they are irrational but real.

Great performance from Julie Kavner here. 15:00 - 16:45 might be her best work in the series; such vulnerability and humanity finally falling from a built up wise-cracking life. Valerie Harper, however, looks like an old maid in a lot of these episodes. Horrible hair, over the top thich New Yawk accent, and frumpy clothes. That divorce from Joe truly shows where her character went.
Stiers looks so young in the face, and his hairpiece makes him look even younger. I'd rather look like Brenda than Rhoda, if I had a choice. I like this show but I get so sick of Brenda and Rhoda both insulting their own selves, having such bad self-esteem, and Rhoda practically starves herself to be skinny. A few jokes about it is funny, but good grief, enough! Rhoda is bossy, and Brenda can't make a decision for herself. The late 1970s was popular for plastic surgery. It is so funny when people think Benny Goodwin is Goodman, and that he is a son of the bandleader.
If only Brenda remembered that Rhoda never thought she was beautiful either. But both Brenda and Rhoda are beautiful and have always been so.

Dispanted when Joe and Rhoda broke up
The scene where Brenda breaks down with Rhoda is a tour de force of acting. Oscar worthy
@The mysterious Miss X you sound amazing do you have an imdb page?
They're both pretty...but Rhoda's outfit in the first scene...
This is the second episode in a row that I wasn't particularly entertained.
Bravo!!!!
I have seen Valerie Harper in person. She was really beautiful
A new hairdo and Brenda would be perfectly beautiful.
I like her hair the way she wears it. The only thing I'd do is add some curl.
@@alondralabute2310straight hair was in back then. I like her hair. And when she winds up with long hair its gorgeous.
Who couldn't love Brenda?
David Ogden Steirs with hair. Lol.
What’s with the head scarfs?
Ethnic thing
They were fairly popular back then. I liked them. Still do
Every episode in the season is missing Joe.
They were split up. New apt too. Glad to see him gone. Liked the actor but not the personality they gave him.
The actor who plays the doctor sounds as arrogant as he does in MASH.
From Nick in Ep 20 to Benny in Ep 21.
Frasier did a variation of this plot with Roz
THIS. DOCTOR. IS. LYING. TO. BREMDA, I. BET..
Brenda is pretty no need for nose job
Brenda was beautiful as she was.
