- The B and W Foldon - folding bike box / travel case for a Brompton folding bike
Confused?
Maybe this video will help explain
This is a folding bike box from B&W - for folding bikes - so perfect for our Brompton bikes, which folds - the box folds for storage / transport
The video shows how it works, as well as weight and dimensions
It also shows how we travel with our Bromptons - using left luggage sometimes
Hmmm… Folding Brommy? Check! Folding Helmet? Check! I think it makes sense to have a “Folding” travel case… good video! Thanks for helping me make my decision. Oh! And I like your travel stickers! I recognized the Berlin Ampelmann first thing! Cheers!
Thank you for watching! We find them great, really easy to load!
Love your instruction videos ....amazing
Thank you so much for watching
This is my favorite Brompton box. I just can't trust soft bags since airport employees literally throw luggage around during the loading/unloading process.
It offers protections nearly on par with the fold-on case made by the same company, but with only two third of the price and weight.
Also It can be loaded and ported on the rear rack, so I could ride my Brompton to a hotel not so close to a major station without the need to transfer with buses or taxi.
It’s our favourite too - we have one of each - the folding and hard case version. If we’re travelling together we take both - if only one of us is travelling we take the folding version. Haven’t tried on the rack yet - will try that next time.

Here is my implementation, I also tied other stuff, including a pop-up tent together with the box. It is not the most elegant solution, but it worked.

Thanks for the photos - now i feel the need for a rack!
@@brilliantbikes I tie the folded box to the s-bag rail and mount it up front.
The I can have my luggage on the rear rack.
@@baharezo Do you get heel strike with this setup?
👍👍👍👍🙏
🙏thank you so much
Thank you for the video. Do you get charged fees by the airlines for the case being oversized?
Many thanks for the question. So far we have not been.
Is this checked in as oversized and or as sports equipment and if so do you have to pay extra? I’ve seen the dimensions are above what is normally acceptable 158cm. Thanks!
It does depend a bit on the airline, we always take it to oversized baggage as they tend to look after it better
Thanks for watching
@@brilliantbikes do you pay extra for that? Thanks!
I notice that the 4 reinforcing metal pieces have one side is flat, the other turns out. What is the correct way to fit these? Flat side towards the inside or outside of box?
Hey! Does a Birdy fit in as well?
Many thanks for watching!
I’d say no as they just don’t fold as small!
How is it for carrying to and from airport on Brompton, though? i.e. literally riding from home to airport, airport to wherever staying, etc.?
Good question - we haven't actually tried that - when we've travelled we have either got a bus / train to the city and left the box in the hotel or .... leave it in a locker at the airport when we arrived there
We've seen pictures where people strapped it to the rear rack - but we haven't tried that
Maybe that's a good challenge when / if flying becomes possible again!
@@brilliantbikes Clearly excuse for post-lockdown trip to try out for us ;-)
Awesome I’m using the B &W hard case but it can’t fold up.
We have one of each. We were worried about the folding one at first - the fact it folds means it’s thinner material. However, the ease of folding, the extra space inside and the fact that it has now survived Australia and back more than once has made thus our favourite!
doesn;t seem to offer much protection though. My stem got dented because of the rough luggage handlers at the airport
We always pack ours with clothes / stuff to try and minimise risk we can't control - like baggage handlers!
We had one customer who's bike was squashed when a truck reversed over it at the airport - the only way to protect against those types of things would be a very strong (probably too heavy to transport_ metal box (or insurance!)
Having looked at the video from B&W (ua-cam.com/video/OzkFBKiJlEg/v-deo.html) it looks different to yours - the edges look sealed and it seems to fold a little better - is yours an older model?
There are 2 sizes for this foldon, S & M. Which one is more suitable for brompton bike?
The S which is the size shown in the video.
Which of the two do you prefer to travel with ?
Ah - those days when travel was possible ;-)
The folding bike box is the one we take if there is just one person going (with the other box in addition when travelling with two bikes)
The folding one has more room in it, so the saddle doesn't have to be removed, and also more room for luggage (thats the downside - it needs to be padded out to stop the bike moving during transit)
The box also folds down conveniently - meaning if you are storing at an airport / station - it can fit in a smaller locker
The fold isn't that great - the z-folded walls don't match properly so the box close a little askew and the box isn't sturdy enough for flying. One bad handler and it cracks somewhere. Mine did. Asked in a fora if it was normal - it was.
Still works, but at that price it's rather disappointing.
PS: My foldon is the one with the closed wall - the one in the video is with an open wall, that needs assembly.
Did your Brompton get damaged?
@@bethmccaff255 no.
And now i'm travelling again and obe of the locks have vanished somewhere between my departure and arrival.
Knoklsnedkr oh no!! You mean one of the straps has gone?!?
