My favorite part of this argument is how people ignore the Confederate constitution not allowing any state to ban slavery is literally taking away a state's right to decide if they want to allow slavery or not.
The CSA Constitution didn't ban states from abolishing slavery. All restrictions were placed on its congress, not the states. The states were central to the document. Declaring in its Preamble. that each state was acting in its own sovereign and independent character. Creating a permanent federal government with limited powers. And when it does mention slavery it really is referring to taxes via the back door and contracts of lebor. At the time slavery was taxed- as slaves were considered property. Contracts, just as they are now, were legally binding. Because the illegal slave trade was a major problem, the South set up a system of contractual labor that applied to legally purchased slaves and indentured servants. But it also applied to banks or businesses that engaged in commerce with plantation owners. When the North didn't return runaway slaves or indentured servants, barring slaves and plantation owners from traveling to a particular city or engaging in commerce in Northern states it was seen as an infringement on free enterprise. Where people get confused, is the difference between impairing or denying the right in slave labor or indentured servitude and passing laws abolishing it. Two separate things. Case in point: even though several states abolished slavery and servitude, they did allow plantation owners to stay in their state for a certain period of months. Lemon vs. New York is a good example of this. I'm not defending slavery here, just explaining how the system worked then. The CSA Constitution is layered. So you have to do a lot of cross referencing with other documents to really understand it.
@@culturalconfederacy _"All restrictions were placed on its congress, not the states"_
Incorrect. You'll note a distinct lack of the words "Congress shall pass" at the beginning of *Article I Section 9(4)* _No bill of attainder, ex post facto law, or law denying or impairing the right of property in negro slaves shall be passed._
IOW, if they wanted it restricted to congress, they would have specified so.
You have both an American flag and confederate flag and the don’t tread on me flag are you going to rebel or celebrate the union or not?

"White supremacy does not mean black inferiority" just, i can't even begin to explain how wrong
Perhaps it used to mean that to certain people back in the 1960s. I know John Wayne simply regarded it as meaning "college-educated whites in charge" when he used the term in a now-infamous interview.
Personally, I prefer the term "ethno-statism". It's more accurate and more encompassing to the larger problem of racism, not just pro-white racism.
@@1krani it was still racism
@@elmascapo6588
It wasn't racism. Racism would be believing blacks couldn't be responsible leaders because of their skin color or genetics. Wayne believed they couldn't be responsible leaders _at that point_ because colleges and higher education had only just opened their doors en masse to them. They hadn't had the opportunity for education and therefore, Wayne reasoned, weren't ready for elected leadership. Once blacks started graduating college, so he clarified in that same interview, then they would be "educated to the point of responsibility" and thus Wayne would have no issue with them occupying stations of elected office.
He wasn't saying they should be barred from holding office, either, just that he personally didn't support what he regarded as not-yet-higher-educated people being put in charge simply because it was trendy.
and i thought people justifying nationalism was bad…
@@PeanutButterParker
What's wrong with nationalism? History says it sure yields better results than the alternative.
I was raised in Louisiana. Around 2004, I was in middle school when we were supposed to go over the Civil War in American history. It was to be a two week long segment of the course.
When we walked into the classroom on Monday, the teacher - who was actually the coach - was dressed in his confederate reenactment uniform. He told us we wouldn't need our books for the next two weeks, because he knew this part of the curriculum by heart. He told us there would be no tests for the next two weeks, so, we were super into it. We spent two weeks learning about the American Civil War from a man dressed as a confederate general.
There was not a single mention of slavery in those two weeks. It was taught to us that it was entirely about the southern states fighting for their right to oppose the ruling of the federal government for fair representation in congress and over taxation. So, if you meet arrogant southerners who don't understand why the confederate flag is distasteful, keep in mind what was being taught in public education not that long ago.
Side note: that same week, the science teacher brought a rifle to school to show us that fluid dynamics proves JFK had to have been shot from the front. Ironically, the test he set up actually supported that the shot could have been from the back, because the gallon of milk he shot actually moved closer to us on the table, proving he had no idea what he was talking about. He played it off saying we couldn't rely on the test results because it normally doesn't do that.

I don't know how many times it needs to be said before people get it. Statues are not meant to record history, they are meant to glorify historical events, figures, and/or certain beliefs. The only time Statues are not doing that is if they are in a museum with their full context on display.
The weird part is to glorifying losers and traitors, these are in front of capital buildings and court houses in the south. It's so backwards.
When you look at a statue of a hero and only see it glorifying that person's deeds, and you don't recall the context and history surrounding him, you are displaying your own ignorance. Good point that the South wanted to expand slavery, for they feared they would be overwhelmed by a supermajority coalition of free states in the federation if more free states were granted entry.
Also the issue of slave value eventually declining if they couldn't expand. The slave population was constantly increasing and if there was no new demand for them from western states their value would decrease due to an oversupply in the existing slave states.

It takes a great deal more courage to stand your ground when you know your out gunned, out maned, out numbered & the odds are not in your favor, knowing there's a real chance you won't win, but then to stand any way because you feel like it's the right thing to do. That's not an easy thing to do. The ruling elites? The top 1%... they don't want that. They want a public who are weak & who are cowards because those types are easier to control. The truth of the matter is though is that none of them are even able to comprehend the mindset and politics of southern states because they were born in a time long removed from that period of history. The southern states undoubtedly fought for the right to own slaves, but the “geniuses” modern brains refuse to accept that fact because it sounds evil and no one in this day and age could, would, ever do such a thing.
