    Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.bbtv.com/c...
Today it's time to take the Norinco QBZ-97 - aka Type 97 NSR - out to the range for some shooting! This is the Canadian semiautomatic-only legal version of China's new military rifle, and it is chambered for the 5.56mm NATO cartridge (the Chinese military models use their 5.8x42mm cartridge).
Overall, the Type 97 is an acceptable rifle in all ways, but an excellent rifle in none. Its controls are functional but slow, and its trigger leaves a lot to be desired. The sights in particular are begging for improvement, in my opinion - the rear apertures are just too small to use easily.
That said, the rifle did run just fine throughout the day, I was able to make most of my hits, and it is a remarkably low-cost option (especially in Canada).
Thanks to Daniel and Colin for arranging this opportunity for me to take a look at the rifle!
If you enjoy Forgotten Weapons, check out its sister channel, InRangeTV! / inrangetvshow

Fun fact: these are pretty popular in Canada not only due to price, but because it's a 5.56 NATO rifle that isn't an AR-15 platform. AR-15 platform guns are restricted by default, but this gun is non-restricted.

I assume in the States, if the mags are not pinned, they also accept 30 rounds or even 40 rounds pmags. The main thing is the reliability and compactness (29.8 inch), about 8.6 lbs. If you clean it, it will actually last a long time. Because it's heavy, you barely felt the recoil, and trigger isn't that bad imo. The 2 downsides are that people complain some fit and finish aren't great, but I find them acceptable, and they meet the casing so far away and mangle it in the process so you can't reload them.

The quality of these rifles is actually excellent, there is allot of people in these comments that don't know anything about these, instead using anti Chinese stereotypes and jokes about cheap Chinese products. Mostly due to the creaky plastic sound. Yet nobody is addressing why the gun is made from such a plastic, why was this creaky formula of plastic used? The answer is actually simple, because they needed a special formula of polymer that would work both in the tropics and in extreme cold, China has climates that range from tropical jungles to desert and frozen tundra. In northern China they get temperatures similar to Russia, extreme cold and snow, they needed their rifle to be impact resistant and strong in temperatures down to negative 40 Celsius. Many types of plastic and even fiberglass shatter on impact at such cold temps, so they created a soft flexible plastic that has that annoying creaky sound at normal temps, because it is flexible, at extreme cold temps it becomes much more firm but not brittle.

The SA80 latest version (v2 and v3) is a damn good rifle and LIGHT years better than this cheap garbage. If you pick one up and use it, it is way better than many portray, Very little recoil, super easy to acquire the target, and the bullpup format makes it easy to handle in tight spaces. The original SA80 v1 was a GOOD design let down by some stupid engineering detail oversights (like poor firing pin tip robustness) - basically it didn't go through a proper proofing stage to iron those stupid errors out - and it took decades before H&K finally did that.

You should mention this gun is (somewhat) popular in Canada because of the current gun laws. Not to get into politics but to make is simple in Canada AR and AK variants (among many others in a long list) are subject to tighter regulations requiring registration and restricting use to certified ranges. Ergo weapons like this that are not on the list of doom, and can be classified as "non-restricted", do not need paperwork to own, buy or sell and can be used for hunting and back country shooting (yea we can't hunt with ARs here). Other good examples of this is the SKS, Tavors and the VZ58, which are also non-restricted and very popular here... we like having "for fun guns" too in Soviet Canuckistan haha. I'm sure you know but I think it's important to mention as to understand why the gun gained some traction here where as in the USA there are more alternatives in AR and AK platforms.

So not good for reloading. It's brass flinging is like a close in defense weapon and similar to the AGB42b

It's a big deal for Canada where the AR series is restricted to range use only. The NSR is the cheapest military style .223/5.56 rifle we can get and walk around in the woods with it for plinking or hunting.
And ya, we realize how insane that is legally. "Here are a pile of .223 rifles you can use everywhere (There are at least 10 models of .223 semi that are not restricted) but those ARs... no no no, they are scary and dangerous. Ranges only please"... Meanwhile, there is a gun store near me where I can get a semi 50BMG rifle, non-restricted. Total sense... From Bushmaster no less too...

It fits right onto my type 97, and it makes aiming much easier comparing to its original iron sights. The only down side is that the reticle was developed for 5.8mm cartridge so I can only shoot it accurately at the distance of my zero.
