  • I cover Programming multiple Inline RF Remote Control Dimmer Switches for LED Strip Lights (one color / Single Color) to work simultaneously in close proximity to control multiple individual light sets.
    See how this same key command that can help you, can also wipe out all the work you have done.
    There are no programming instructions provided with the remote. This is the technique I have found for this model.
    We will also show the hazards of a short and how these LED RF remote controls can create a short and potential fire hazard.
    This programming applies to just remotes with this keyboard layout... other keyboard layouts may use different key combinations
    These are rated for 12-24V. Labeled to support 12 Amps with instructions that say they support 6 Amps.

      Great news. I still use many of these around the house and with new installs when I don’t use a motion sensor. I have recently started playing with WiFi enabled single color and multi color controllers. The cost is more per unit. You gain scheduling, control from multiple devices and smart home integration like google and Alexa for those areas where hands free is of benefit. Enjoy your install.

    I lost my remote so purchased new controller/remote kit on eBay, paired it with your help. Thank you. Surprised the original which looked very similar wouldn't respond to pairing attempts. Was purchased at Home Depot, Commercial Electric brand. Maybe it was older or something. The controller module has the same shape, wire gauge, color etc so I'll be swapping them out tonight, so I have a remote again.

      So I have had remotes that stop working. The fix in all so far has been to look in the battery compartment and bend the tabs that makes contact with the negative towards the door... should be the spring metal to the sides. My assumption is that dropping the remote a sufficient number of times allows the weight of the battery in deceleration to bend the tabs so contact is broken. I am glad you got a solution working again.

    I found an additional programming instruction for "Free Pairing Mode" or also called "Unpaired Mode". Unplug controller for at least five seconds, plug back in, within five seconds hold down "On/Off" and "Mode+" buttons for five seconds. Although, I'm not quite sure what the point of "Unpaired mode" is? Why not just do the pairing procedure with all controllers powered and then just unplug those out of on/off sync, hit the power button on the remote, then plug the others back in again to have them all in on/off sync.
    All said, you are absolutely correct, some versions of these remotes use the 50% & 100% buttons instead of the speed buttons. The same may be true for the "Free pairing mode". :)

    I just discovered that when you first get the controllers (the wired part that receives the signal), apparently they are in universal mode where they will respond to any remote regardless of whether that remote has been reprogrammed or not. But once you program a controller, that controller will now only ever work with one remote at a time, whichever the last one was that you paired it with. I don't know if there is any w ay to set the controller back to universal mode again. I tried different things but couldn't get anything to work. So the trick is to use a new unprogrammed controller if you want to have several remotes controlling the same thing. But then you may have a problem if anyone else nearby is using a similar remote or similar frequency, your lights might get turned on or off unexpectedly.

    Is there a way to force ON or OFF, not toggle? I have more than one light strip in the same electrical circuit, and it happened that the lights are "out of sync" with one another. Turning the circuit off does not solve, as the controllers have memory... Any idea? Thank you for your video.

    • @alwaystinkering6972
      @alwaystinkering6972  6 років тому

      No. I also tried getting one remote to talk to two controllers for someone and that did not work.
      Options: if you can get a wire between them a one color amplifier will allow you to extend control and keep the second power supply for the second string... and you get one controller control. Another option is rgb wifi controllers (with the infrared remote option if you want) the wifi gives you phone control of each light separately. You obviously are not using the color lights so use the common (which is usually the positive) and one color. You could also do something similar with the cheaper regular color controllers. Another option might be the Mi-light WiFi Led controller system. They used to make one color and rgb color modules.

    I have led lights on my stairs. I have one remote at the top and one remote at the bottom. Worked for about a year and then something got it out of sync so that no remotes worked. Used your video to reprogram. Do you know how to make 2 remotes work with one receiver?

    • @alwaystinkering6972

      I tested that and found no way to intentionally make both work with one remote. I am thinking of doing my stairs soon. I will probably try dual motion with a blocking rectifier. Voice activated is tempting but Alexa or google screaming ok in the middle of the night may not go over well.
      Look at the mi-light controllers. One remote can control up to 4 controllers and you have the option of multiple remotes.

      All of my color controllers are infrared or WiFi or WiFi/infrared. The WiFi infrared work best for me because I can use my phone to control the lights and the non-tech people in my house can use the remote.
      While there a growing number of options you will find that the offers under multiple brand names are the same product. This means you should be able to shop price. This link is an example of an infrared with WiFi www.amazon.com/dp/B07BRWTQCS they come in RGB and RGBW format.
      A broader selection could be seen by searching “wifi rgb led controller”
      I hope you find a solution that works for you.

      Make sure you have only one powered on when pressing the buttons to do the programming. Pressing the programming keys will reset all powered dimmers within range to be controlled by that one remote. There are appear to be multiple places manufacturing this design so at some point behavior may change.

      I have never tried it but being below the 12v lower rating it probably would not. If you look at usb led and dimmers those operate at 5v. So they may operate with 3 batteries for 4.5 volts. That would have to be tested. Maybe you can find some costume led’s that have a remote. Those are designed to work with batteries.

    • @dianavsilva
      @dianavsilva 3 місяці тому

      @@alwaystinkering6972thank you very much! So I changed the operation of the LEDs to 3 AAA batteries (by connecting it to an old 3 AA battery holder I had) and the remote worked BUT it was not enough to entirely stop the current. My guess is that these LEDs don't have any resistors and will turn on with any small amount of current that passes. Since I had ordered two controllers, I placed them in series and managed to entirely turn off (and on) using the controller. Definitely not the most elegant solution, but at least I managed to do something with the parts I already had. Thanks again for your help!

      Mi-light makes a system with multiple remotes to multiple controllers. Usually each remote can do up to 4 controllers. Another option would be phone controlled controllers if you want to use multiple phones for control. Phone enabled are more common for controlling color. You can use them for single color by using just one band and making an adapter wire. On most color controllers each color is a (+) connector. The common is the (-).

      No. As I show in the video sometimes they answer to the same remote, but getting both to respond is hit or miss. I have used some color controls that are run from your phone. The apps give you a list of controllers it sees. I only have one controller so i don't know if I could control more at the same time. Actually I do have a second controller that is supposed to use the same software. I will have to run a test to see if an action can do multiple at the same time. I had tested the wifi controller on an Alexa voice control. It worked well.

    This should be able to power two 10w led lights right? I connected it and it worked fine for 10 minutes and then just died. And now it just flickers one time when i try to power it on.

    • @alwaystinkering6972

      The rating of label of 12A would be 144W at 12V DC as there are 12W per amp at that voltage. I run a rated load of 9A or 108W on a daily used string for over a year now. I say rated because the actual load created by a string is frequently less than its potential peak. As for diagnosing your problem. First verify that your 10W LED fixtures work without the dimmer. If the dimmer is toast you may want to remove the cover over the circuit board ( which is heat shrink) for analysis. Did anything melt? Do the wires test as functional and not broken. The one short I experienced melted the wiring insulation over the IC that overheated. You likely won't be able to fix a problem, but you may see something obvious in the issue, including a defect. Also check your power is putting out the correct voltage. Also remember, the printed instructions say it is rated for 6A... You still would have been OK... it is just a reminder that there is not telling what it should be.

Now when i connect the leads it actually lights up, but it doesnt want to be controlled. The controller it self is fine and working however. So now it only acts as a peice of wire... Ill order a new one and see if it happends again. I plan to use it on my motorcycle. I want to use these insainly bright tiny work lights as drl's and being able to set the brightness will help me being seen, without blinding other drivers. Especially when its getting darker or raining. Do you think theres a better solution to this? I really like the idea of being able to strobe them as well.

    • @alwaystinkering6972
      @alwaystinkering6972  5 років тому +1

      The one above the rated amp draw of the led lights you are using and no higher than the rating on the next lowest rated item... wire... switch and such. At 12v it is 1 amp per 12w of rating.
      If you had a 12w light thats 1 amp. 1amp fuse may be too close, 2 amp would be the lowest. You are protecting against a short.
      You don't want that short to pass enough amps it can melt something and cause a fire. Unless you are pushing the full rating, a 10 amp fuse should protect this dimmer... if you trust the factory wiring on it. So if you are using lights with a lower draw than the dimmer rating, fuse at the light rating.

    • @alwaystinkering6972
      @alwaystinkering6972  5 років тому

      Its the load that determines if you can use it. The dimmer may make it as high as 12 amps. I have a 9 amp rated run. I replaced the wires on the unit with a higher 18 gauge wire. Beyond that you need an amplifier to go above the rating. The amp will transmit the dimmer functuons onto distant led lines but not the load of those lines. The amp does this by requiring power be run directly to the amp. The at power is used for the lights it controls. You can power a main line and an amp from the same source power so long as it is rated for the total load and the distance to the amp does not cause a significant loss of power. You can also look at higher amp solutions like DC12-24V 30A LED Single Color LED Dimmer Controller with RF Wireless Remote www.amazon.com/dp/B06Y5M6CX4 i review the mechanical version of this switch in my one color dimmer review.

      The IR light on the front of the remote usually lights even though the remote is RF. If it does not look like it is working the battery may not be making contact. When you slide the battery in it makes contact on the (+) surface and then there is a piece of spring metal that makes contact with the sides (0). I have dropped a remote 12 too many times and bend the spring metal so it does not make contact with the sides. I fixed that with a small screw driver that pulled the spring wings back out.
      I am assuming you have the same layout on your remote. Hopefully it is something that simple.

      If you have qty 4 5 amp lines that is 20 amp and too much draw. Of course qty 4 5 amp would require you add an amplifier after at least two runs that will keep the draw on the dimmer within spec. You can get 30 amp dimmers. You would still need to home run off the dimmer to farther runs. As far as voltage drop. On my 9 amp run I replaced the wires on this unit with 18 ga wire. I re heat shrinked it shut. Two years and still going. When running 12v over distance to the start of the line a larger gauge wire will help avoid drop. Here is the 30 amp with remote. I have used the mechanical version of this and include that in my one color dimmer review. If I connect two in series, can I reduce the brightness even more?

    • @alwaystinkering6972
      @alwaystinkering6972  2 роки тому +1

      You should not connect two in series as the second in line will get dirty power. LED’s don’t dim as a regular bulb. While they do look duller with a slightly lower voltage, the dimmers electronics flash on and off at an huge rate of speed and the momentary illumination rate gives us brightness.
      That being said the led’s have a point at which they illuminate and that point is their dimmest illumination.
      The best way to make things dimmer would be to include fewer led’s when at the lowest illumination. You could do that by… addressable led’s and a controller you can customize. You could use two strips with fewer led’s per meter and put on on one controller and one on the other…. Or your could take a strip you have an go through the labor of wiring two lines in parallel with wire attaching the sections so they offset in an alternating manor…. One on each controller.
      … and the large black unit is still the best dimmer controller I have used for attaining smoothness when approaching the lower settings. I recall their being a wireless version of it.

      Not with this controller. There are a couple of options. For remote based looks at mi-light. Each remote can do up to 4 controllers and you can have multiple remotes. The other is phone or voice control. That can be a WiFi or Bluetooth based controller. I demonstrate a WiFi controller in this video. ua-cam.com/video/SAyy_kZojv0/v-deo.html

    • @alwaystinkering6972

      I am always hesident to feed electricity backwards into a device that does not clearly indicate it supports that configuration. One remote activating the power would create that scenerio for the other controller. Consider the milight remote control system that allows you to have one controller and multiple remotes. That system also has a wifi option you can add for additional control. That being said you could also get a standalone wifi controller that has an ir remote option. Phone would be one remote and the ir remote the other.

      I grabbed a battery pack, two remotes, a controller, some light and went out into a field to run a test. I was unable to get two remotes to talk to the same controller. I could swing controller control back and forth between remotes (I guess that is an option if you have no other controllers... just resync when you go to use the remote).
      I tried sending the sync sequence at the same time, only one would win. I tried numerous other key combinations with the loser and it would never gain simultaneous control. I also cycled through resync's on one controller to see if there would be some overlap at some point... and I encountered none.
      From this experiment I would say the controllers build their sync off what the remote sends... and that the controllers must us the same or a similar algorithm since we know the reset sequence will reprogram all controllers in range... and many will then then be controlled by that one remote.

      If your remote is identical to these and it is not working or syncing, Check that the wire assembly is not getting HOT. That is a sign that it has been damaged by a short. If it has been damaged it will make it useless. The I damaged during an install let the lights turn on, but all control was lost.
      If your remote is not the identical layout I have seen other videos for the remotes with the different layout that show the 50% and 100% buttons being used to do the programming.

      @@alwaystinkering6972 I have 2 receivers and they both stopped working, running hot. The LEDs are always on. I removed the shrink wrap from one of them and found 3 A2SHB mosfet surface mount devices (SMD) which I think are the output devices. Two of the devices have zero Ohms from drain to source, which I suspect would cause the output to be stuck on. I am trying to grow my SMD skills so I ordered some devices from eBay $1.99 for 100 pieces. I plan to replace those mosfets and see if the receiver starts working again. I also have some replacement receivers on order so I can compare good with bad. Why all of this for a $2 device? I tinker too.

      @@skiptourville823 Interesting. They stopped working with just an LED strip load? Any lights on the strip out? What voltage and load do you run? The 27' over the garage is my largest load (I did replace the wire leads with 18 ga). I am 2+ years now with that one. I have had some remotes wig out. The metal prongs that touch the edge of the battery tend to not spring back if the remote has bounced off the floor too many times. I just bend them back. Other than that the dozen plus I have installed are all still running. If you have no short and your draw is too near the rating try an amplifier. Mixed luck with those. The in expensive one color amps are usually RGB inside with the RGB shorted into one color. Not an issue but the failure rate has been more than one. The good news about working on your SMD skills is that it is only a $2 device.

      If the remote is powered properly you can see an light illumination when you press a button. No light the remote may not be powering and the flashing is just the mode the unit was in when it powered down. If there is no power in the remote the battery obviously has to be good.
