it's unbelievable how Paul Thomas Anderson could pull out such a jungian trilogy (there will be blood, the master, phantom thread), so flawlesssly directed both in cinematography AND storytelling/acting. I just don't get people not getting phantom thread. I've seen it in Berlin the very day it opened, three years ago, and it hasn't left me since.

Yeah man, I can see how he got there on The Master though, considering the esotericism involved in this story, as well as for many new age gurus who model themselves on Jung. And all of it unfalsifiable too 👍

Every PTA film should be watched twice to understand it, which means the writing is great. I didn't know what the significance of the churning water would be, but i initially thought that the way the eddies develop made a sort of heart shape.
Looking at it after this analysis, it links up beautifully with the time-travel theme. The boat, as i think Dodd even refers to it in the film, is life. There are these eddies left behind which swirl around because they are trying to catch up to the ship. Physically, eddies are the vortices which form from a pressure differential between the front of the ship and the rear - the ship pushes through water, which leaves a minor vaccuum behind it, sucking in some water and creating the eddies.
I think Freddie is clearly the water (aimless, moldable, impossible to hold) while several other characters perform the role of ship, although Hoffman most obviously characterises it. The focus of the movie, as with the shot, is on Freddie, and what it means to be pulled into the undertow of something or someone else. It is mesmerizing, it is violent, it is never quite consummated as a relationship - the eddies will forever slip away from the ship because they lack internal drive, but if the ship slows to keep the eddy flowing then not only does the ship lose its momentum, but the eddy will also "lose interest" because the eddy is pure reaction, pure response to the ship's forward inertia.
I think many people wish to be the ship, to forge themselves into the driving force which will pull the others in behind through power and magnetism, but we are all water. And to travel with someone is to live in the current with them, as Freddie did at the end, to the hurt of the still striving Dodd. The whirling dervish, so validating and beautiful to Dodd, that was pulled in behind has finally exited the turbulence and gone floating along.
There is much more to this movie than just one metaphor, so i won't pretend this is everything, but it certainly seems to fit with the film's tone.
This was an excellent essay. I mean, one of the best I've seen on this site. Please, continue to offer more perspectives like this.

The Master has been one of my favorite films for years. I’ve seen it a countless number of times. I own the bluray. It’s become a kind of comfort watch for me. And yet, you were able to show me something new about it. You even managed to pack an emotional punch that was entirely your own. Incredible video essay.

Amazing essay.. theres a scene where freddy is in the theatre watching Casper the friendly ghost where casper says "The captain never leaves the ship..". I always thought That line was very much in accordance to Freddy not being able to get off the army/navy and settle for a life in Land. PTA even calls freddy a sea creature in an interview. Loved your video, Great work man. Keep doing what you do.

Great analysis. They definitely make it abundantly clear that Lancaster Dodd and Freddie Quell's dynamic is like a owner and their pet. But I was always stumped with Peggy Dodd, specifically her control over Lancaster in the bathroom scene and the way she operates in the background. Curious to know your thoughts on her character's significance. Again, great video essay!
Thanks dude! Nice profile pic btw. Yeah I regret not talking about Peggy in this video. If Dodd is trying to keep Freddy from becoming an animal, then Peggy is trying to keep Dodd from the same fate. Dodd is drawn to Freddy, and Freddy to him. So Peggy is trying to stave off his animalistic urges in the bathroom so that he can focus on being the face of The Cause. Peggy is the true leader of the organization, just behind the curtain. That's what I think anyway. Thanks for commenting! I'm really glad you liked the video!

It's ridiculous how well and thoroughly you deconstructed the themes here. Also love your use of examples from alternate mediums in order to back up your take. I would agree with another comment claiming that this is the best essay about this film around here. At least I personally had an extremely enjoyable time checking this one out, thank you!
On a related note, PTA is truly a beast. His films really show his love for the artistic medium he operates in; he's always made it passively known how he is equal amounts of both genuine and self-aware and his narration throughout his filmography is almost always weirdly compelling in every layer. And watching his work, what I find fascinating is that he is almost always in absolute focus mode.

Excellent video on The master, I couldn't figure much what PTA was trying to say trough the film but I knew this something great, the level of performances, cinematography & production design this movie had is extremely rare to see in films...and now I'm able to understand some of it thanks to you which makes me want to revisit the movie

on the topic of Casper, in the 90s I loved the movie & cartoons. but at some point once I got older I realized, this is a show bout a dead child. how'd he die? was he killed? was he sick? I couldn't watch it the same way anymore & would get dark vibes. but when I was young I didn't think past what I was being shown even tho I would have known ghost=dead person. I just was able to part these things out & enjoy it. idk.

I love this essay, pal. I do think it's super odd how every video essay on The Master refers to Dodd as "The Master" even if by accident. And, it makes it even more interesting that you did at one point. Like, even reflecting on the piece this beautifully, we still find ourselves slipping and calling Dodd "Master". It's interesting.
Thanks Landon! I'm glad you liked it. I would love to hear your take on this because I'm a little confused. Dodd is known by his disciples as Master, so it seemed fine to address him as that. Are you referring specifically to the title? As in, "The Master" is not referring to Dodd himself but more about the theme of finding a Master or serving as your own?
@@skaetrgirl1305 they do call him master, but I’ve never seen him as the titular “The Master”. He’s A master OVER Quell but I think it’s very purposeful that Dodd’s followers call him master, never once referring to him at THE master.
What I was pointing is simply how Dodd is (probably not even purposefully) referred to as “The Master” because the movie, and Hoffman, do such a great job of confusing, or possibly luring us into using that title.
As for what or who the title DOES refer to is obviously vague although I’m personally inclined to view that title as a sort of nebulous mastery of the ones self. Not as a master OVER anyone. But one of becoming a master of ourselves. More like a mastery of a skill if that’s makes sense haha

Depending on where you are in the story, the master can be Dodd, his wife (trying telling me she isn't the master when she tosses Dodd off in front of the bathroom mirror! lol) or Freddy himself. What hasn't been explored too often is just how good a therapist Dodd would have made had he himself not strayed from the right path. There is a great essay by Rob Ager where he examines the first 'formal processing' scene between Freddy and Dodd. Dodd employs various techniques and gets Freddy to open up in a way the doctors at the veterans hospital could not. Had Dodd not succumb to quackery, he would have made an excellent therapist and at a time when people needed it too. The conclusion I make from all that is when it comes to masters, Dodd is actually last on the list!
In the script, whenever there is dialogue from Hoffman's character, he is labeled as "Master" and not as Lancaster
@@clash5j right. And there are NO differences between that script you’re referring to and the movie that we got. But, that’s still a valid reading if that’s what you got from it. That doesn’t change the fact that Lancaster being referred to as “Master” is worlds different from the singular, more existential title “THE Master”. I mean, this is literally my last comment haha just read two up... there’s a difference between how followers refer to Dodd and the title of the movie and it’s very much on purpose.

Great explanation of real movement....from the opening shot your seeing movement and that continues with the idea of time travel and reincarnations coupled with that desperate battle between The master and the subservient mind.....the imagery is all movement

love this movie. surprised you didn't tie in the scene at the end where freddie is asleep in a movie theater while casper is playing. 'a captain never leaves his ship'. the aimless nature of freddie is spot on by joaquin. this is best epitomized in the scene at doris's window when he tells her he has to go 'away'. when doris asks where, he says to stop asking questions, and 'i dont know anyway' - sort of a kaufman-esque play on words there. 'away' is also the word he recalls in the first processing scene w dodd.

This is my favorite analysis of THE MASTER, congrats!! But I have the feeling that Casper´s Story, which is quite interesting, didn't land at the end of the video. Was it a matter of time? Anyway real tender and deep narrative.

Any thoughts about the bizarre phone call in the theatre? It feels like reality starts breaking down at that point. Do you think that this is about turning away from the need for explanations and answers, towards acceptance of the primal and the absurd, or is there perhaps something else going on?
Thanks man! I think Freddy has continued drifting at that point in the film. When he gets the call from Dodd, and Freddy doesn't understand how he found him, I think it's proof of their connection to each other. You point to an interesting possibility though. Has the film itself turned away from logic and accepted the absurd? I'm not sure. But I like it!
Yo, this is exceptional quality for a UA-cam video essay! At best, most of these 'analyses' are mediocre. Often, they're highly superficial, bordering on pretentious. Between the editing and the strength of your argument, you've broken the mould big time. Great job :))
Thanks, Himath! I think that so many unique viewpoints are made superficial for the sake of expediency. I can't expect a channel to keep uploading nuanced arguments regularly. At a certain point, you just burn out. But at this stage, I still have many more ideas!
